Holy shit! I knew we'd see Powell resign...and there had been talk of Ashcroft leaving to start some cult or something but this is just freaky. Tom Ridge just resigned too!
It's like all my hopes for Bush losing the election are coming true but the man himself is still there!
Questions for you Flarites: Wow do you think Connie Rice will fare in Powell's position as a woman having t deal with so many arab leaders? Will it be areal hinderance or do you think the position is enough weight to clear that obstacle?
Anyone know the current crop of replacment choices for the open positions?

Like I said before, it's quite common for Cabinet members NOT to stay for the second term. Clinton kept, I think, 3 out of 14 members for his entire term. Reagan only kept one (well, two if you count Sec. of State Shultz - his predecessor only stayed around one year).

Never before have these key positions been so imporntant though
It still seems as though many are leaving now...while the gettin's good.
Could be worse though: I understand the #2 choice for Sec of State is a real bible-thumper.

I dunno... I would think the height of the Cold War would be a pretty important time, too. Of course, I was in 4th grade in 1984 and only cared about Knight Rider and the A-Team.

Hmmm....I was on the "A-Team" mentality back then as well, but I recall there was far more sense of security back then (mabye it was just that the press was more reigned in and our sense of invulnerability was at an all-time high).

Well, how could you NOT feel invulnerable driving around in a bullet-proof car that TALKS for goodness sake?
Knight Rider was cool. And Bonnie was hot.

It did give one a certain sense of security to know that, if you had a problem and no-one else could help, and if you could find them, maybe you could hire the A-Team, yes.

It must have given the bad guys a sense of security as well: knowing they'd never be shot or killed- only rendered unconsious by some cabbage-shooting device B.A. had devised....

The A-Team would have been bloody hard to find. That van of theirs really blended in. The trick was to find the black hotdog van.

Well, "Face" drove his inconspicous white and red corvette to keep alow profile whenever possible. And Hannibal wore those convincing disguises....
It's just a good thing no one ever thought to watch Murdock: much like no one thought to watch Bin Laden in the late 90's, I suppose. Bin Laden just loses the wackiness factor though.

There's just something strangely funny about comparing Bin Laden and "Howlin' Mad" Murdock.

I would bet a, uh, small amount of money that Bin Laden, too, loves it when a plan comes together.

"I pity the Infidel!"...now we just need some incompetent army general chasing him around- but always arriving a minute or two late to catch him- and we'll have one wacky show to watch every week.
Or the inevitable congressional panel hearings.

Condolezza Rice -> Anti Canadian.
Having Condi there will not improve relations between Canada and the US. In fact, Bush is scheduled to make his FIRST official visit to Canada in four fricken years (still no thank you for our help in the immediate aftermath of 9-11). Last I heard, Condi is trying to stop him.

With Rice in control of the State Department, we'll see a State Department that's under greater control by Bush. Powell and Armitage at times seemed resistance, if not openly opposed at times, to Bush's decisions. We'll see a lot less of it from now on with Rice in charge.
I don't think Rice's gender is going to be much of a hinderance. After all, Clinton's last Secretary of State was also a woman (and also Jewish). Albright seemed to do okay handling Arab foreign affairs ministers; I suspect Rice will liken have a similar amount of ease/difficulty.

I never found Allbright to be effective at anything. She delivered messages from Washington but I cant think of any instance where her presence (or absense) had a result on a crisis.

I don't think Rice will have a problem with being a woman in this situation, I think he problems will arise with her credibility. I don't think many people in the rest of the world believe anything this woman says. She was an arrogant ass at the 911 commission. Tried to spin the Bin Laden report into just some historical document and the thing was title 'Bin laden wants to attack America'. I can't see many world leaders taking this person seriously.

Wasn't it titled 'Bin Laden wants to attack America by flying passenger planes into landmarks and buildings and shit' or something like that?

C'Mon now: with such a vague title, that report could have meant anything.
Who could know that would turn out to be imporntant?
