This was another episode where, after I finished watching it, I was forced to ask "What actually happened in this episode?" And it boils down to "Picard stops to pick up another crew member. Oh, and Seven of Nine shows up in the last five seconds."
No Laris or Zhaban. Boo.
Also, no Hugh.
Geez, how many Emergency Fill-in-the-Blank Holograms does the La Sirena have? I think we're up to four now?
Okay, I'm sure the ship people here are going to pick apart the Rommy BoP, but it was good to see the old girl again. She hasn't shown up since TOS, correct? (No, I'm not counting the versions from Enterprise.)
Also, please tell me I'm not the only one who watched the trailer for the next episode and thought "Dear God this is going to be terrible..."

Pilot: "Hitting the ship's head . . . computer, activate EBH."
Computer: "Please clarify. Do you want the Emergency Buttwiping Hologram or the Emergency Bathroom Napkin-Guy Hologram?"
Pilot: "Both."
Picard: "Do you refer to the washroom attendant?"
Pilot: (Swigs alcohol and smokes something swaggeringly) "Oh hush, prissy British Frenchman. I'm not programmed for finery. I'm the Emergency Quasi-Toxic Masculinity Hologram, the lovable caveman / rogue with a heart of gold."

Does that make Picard Gandalf and Rios Aragorn?

There's more filler in this episode than a cart dog. Man, I could fight & win a land war in Asia in lest time than it takes to develop forward motion in this thing.
How do you say "ronin" in Romulan?
Picard channels Marcus Brody, apparently, with that white suit. They're also super playing up the old man thing. It's getting annoying.
Jeri Ryan has one line & a stage fall, & she gets a special guest credit in tHe opening. Jonathan Del Arco has actual work in an episode & is buried in the end creds. Hm.
RomBOP green wing trailing edges: impulse engines or warp glow?
"Emmet" & Rios speaking Spanish was a nice touch. I think it might've been a South American dialect.
The holostudy scene. I have no problem with everyone talking to/with Picard as they did, because these are not people under his command. They do not have to follow his orders. If anything, it's like a D&D party. Sure, he's the leader, but he's not in charge, & the rogue & bard are gonna let him fucking know it every chance they get.
Name for the evac transports: Wallenberg-class. So cutesy & walloping with the symbolism.
Isn't this supposed to be a 10-episode run? We're 40% through & dick all has been done. It's like the antocs of "Jean-Luc & The Junkyard Gang" insteas.

Does anyone else think that something about the depiction of Romulans is off? Yes, they've gone through a lot but they don't behave like the Romulans we know like at all. They're far more human and approachable, even likeable. There's no trace that the Romulans and the Federation have been at odds for centuries; they're only pissed because the Federation abandoned the evacuation.
After the Zhat Vash a new Romulan group is introduced; the Romulan Warrior Nuns aka Qowat Milat. Yeah ok, whatever.
I suppose Jurati is our "guy" on the show. She doesn't know what's going on and thinks everything is bizarre.

Here's the thing... this is exactly what I wanted from this show once I found out that the Romulans were going to play a big part in it. We've really only ever seen Romulans that were either government or military. In fact, the only instance I can think of where we've previously seen Romulan civilians was the "Reunification" two-parter. I want to see more of Romulan culture here in much the same way that TNG expanded our knowledge of Klingon culture. And let's face it, what we learned about Klingons in TNG didn't really gel much with what had come before either.

I wonder if Peyton List knows that her character is supposed to be Narek's sister. There is some weird Lannister vibe going on between the two.

I agree that most alien species in TNG such as the Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, etc. were pretty much one-dimensional and cardboard. So yeah, it’s refreshing to see them as ‘real’ people now. Of course, from what I’ve seen so far, I think there’s a danger of them becoming *too* real (i.e. too many IRL human characteristics rather than something uniquely alien.)

So Romulus is the West Virginia of the galaxy...

I know this feels like filler. Episodes like this saving up the budget for an episode or two with lots of special effects and action.

I didn't even realize it was a reference. I had to look it up. I don't really mind, though. What I found odd, however, was that that Romulan would have any reason to drop the class name of the transport ships into his little speech.

I mean, she literally started to climb on top of him in the bed at one point. Honestly, I like everything else about the way she's playing the character, but that part's just bizarre.

I can say with absolute certainty that you are not.
