Well, originally there was some concept art of the female Vulcan with a long braid or something like that. According to the costume designer, Rick Berman made her take it off because no Vulcans ever had that before. I guess he was trying to have some continuity at the time.

I sincerely hope that's not true. Otherwise, I think my faith in Berman has gone from zero into negative territory...
