After a somewhat unsteady but promising pilot (remind you of anything?), the second episode has aired . . . a nice mix of Pike's story in "The Menagerie", Geordi's in "The Arsenal of Freedom", and maybe some of the story of Voyager's episode with those smarmy gits that used the trajector thingy. But, it was all told in a fresh enough fashion, with the caveat that unlike Stargate SG-1 where everything sci-fi they encountered was new and different, these folks ought to know more about their time and less about our own.

Still, it was fun and it worked fairly well. After a genuine surprise trap an obvious thing happened, but all in all it was well-executed.

Anyone else watching?

I like it. It feels very TNGy and the humour isn't as exaggerated as the trailer led me to believe.

To be honest, I expected funnier. The pilot banana scene was hilarious, but was played to death in previews.

It occurred to me, though, that sci-fi mixed with humor that borrowed Trek plots was already fairly expertly done in early SG-1. Mostly that was the natural-seeming, contextual interplay between the characters. You had the cute science nerd, the history nerd, the keep-this-down-to-earth-for-the-love-of-pete leader, and the perfect alien straight-man.

These characters . . . it'll be interesting to see what they do with them, but I don't have the sense that the interplay will be naturally hilarious. The super-strong girl played out in the pickle scene, the Teal'c like character can function, but the helm and navigation fellows are kinda bland. It's early yet, but hopefully we'll see them fleshed out better with potentially amusing character traits baked in. The second episode didn't really take us there, I have to say . . . the strong girl drinks when nervous, but other than that her trait is just youth. For many, their trait is their job.

We'll see.

I’m not exactly sold on the show yet, but they haven’t lost me either. It's amusing enough, though it's not as outright funny as I’d hoped. I’m not sure if they’re deliberately emulating the style of TNG and Voyager for humor or for drama.

I will confess I thought that the payoff this week with the zoo administrator and reality tv shows was hilarious.

On the flip side, I hope they don’t keep going back to the awkward old grudges between Mercer and Grayson every single week. That’s going to get old fast in a setting where they’re supposed to be professionals, I hope it doesn’t remain their only character traits.

"Supposed to be professionals" rather overstates the case, what with drunken penis-drawing, cannabis edibles, and sufficient drinking of not-soda to give Kirk's brandy bottle envy, but I definitely get what you're aiming for. Suspension of disbelief can only carry one so far.

I've found the show to be okay. On the one hand, great world-building and sci-fi elements. On the other hand, Seth MacFarlane really cannot tell when a joke has gone on for too long. Okay, we get it, parents are embarressing!

I like it. I was expecting it to be more comedic, but it turns out to have some interesting stories as well.

Picard: Mr. Crusher, what's our maximum speed this week?
Wesley: [checking manual] Uh, 9.4, sir.
Picard: Very good. Take us to Warp 9.8 then.
Wesley: Aye, sir. Warp 9.2 it is.

I think in the hands of someone like the writers of MASH, this show could actually be really good. But Seth MacFarlane is not that guy.

On a note of interest to us at Flare, did anyone else see that they're using motion control models for most shots of the Orville?
