After watching the series in which the Goa'uld are worms vs the movie where they appear to be a regular alien I can only assume the alien we saw in the movie was the host. The Goa'uld had previously used the Unas with not much success maybe that species which was going extinct somehow was the next host. Ra found ancient Earth and thought: "Humans, taste like chicken and will make great hosts." He could have told his fellow Goa'uld, "Want to live? Promise to serve me and I will direct you to Earth." Thus elevating Ra as the highest system lord. And Goa'uld that wanted a new host would have to pledge their allegiance to him.

The only mistake the movie made was showing the alien just before the nuclear blast. Otherwise everything would have worked out perfectly.

Mabye the "alien" is how the human host looks after a few thousand years of sarcogaphus treatments- the body deteorated into that form without regular "sleep" in the chamber....

Some damn thing!

Refresh my memory... how did they find out about Ra's backstory in the first place? Did someone mind link with him somehow, or did one of the Abydonians tell them? Unless it came directly from Ra's mind, whoever told them could just have been wrong.

Or did they read it on the wall of some building? Even then... it could have been propaganda designed to make everyone think that Ra was the last one.

That was the idea of it, yes. In the movie, daniel read the story from the wall in the catacombs, whereby Ra was "the last of a dying race". He came across the humans, found that the "Crying Game" guy was a much better host for him and took him, and proceeded to enslave the population. We then forbade reading and writing to make the Abydonians forget the truth.

In the series, Daniel posits that Ra lied about his being the last one, so that his human subjects wouldn't think that the other snakeheads were like him. Fandom has since suggested that Ra's "there can be only one" rhetoric was abandonned by the Goa'uld after Abydos had been populated, as other System Lords gained in power.

At least it's not like the Stargate novel sequels, that have Jack and Daniel fighting Hathor and other "gods" who were really just a sucession of humans in Ra's entourage that had been embodying their namesakes for generations.

Breaking news: With RDA being in the show only on an occasional basis for the ninth season, the rest of the gang will get beefed up by some more beefcake: Ben Browder, formerly of Farscape, is joining the regular cast.

I don't mind this; Anderson's becoming a remote presence has left the three remaining characters with an unbalanced team chemistry. Where I liked Jonas when he was here, I also hope that adding another member to SG-1 (especially Browder, whom we know is a capable sci-fi actor) will restore the dynamic to something we can like again. And if we can get Davis back as Hammond, I think they can easily go another year.

I'd had a far-flung wish they'd promote Colonel Dixon of SG-13 to the flagship unit - Adam Baldwin rocked in that role. Ah well, this'll do. [Smile]

Well, if we're really lucky, he'll be too busy working on a revived "Firefly".

One can always hope.

(Although, on that same note, as long as Ben Browder is a regular on SG-1, no-one could revive "Farscape" even if they wanted to. But it's certainly better than nothing.)

Someone on Exisle posted a picture of Browder next to Michael Shanks. The resemblance is quite eerie.

A spinoff show with the Prometheus or other starship would be cool.
