Horrormeister Stephen King was hit and nearly killed by an out-of-control van, last June in Maine. Now he's hitting back. Literally. The Misery author has purchased the van that plowed him down and plans to inflict his own brand of punishment. "Yes, we've got the van, and I'm going to take a sledgehammer and beat it," he told Maine's Bridgeton News on Thursday. The van's apologetic driver, Bryan Smith, said King's lawyer and two other men paid $1,500 for the 1985 Dodge Caravan. King, who just celebrated his 52nd birthday on Tuesday, has maintained a surprisingly sunny disposition throughout the ordeal, considering he suffered multiple leg and hip fractures, a collapsed lung, a chipped spine, broken ribs and cuts when the van careened off the road and collided with him as he was walking near his home. The writer even joked with the paper about his recovery. He laughed about having to wear wide-bottomed skateboard pants to cover a metal device that surrounds his injured leg, claiming if he still has it at Halloween, he'll decorate it with jack o' lanterns. What King doesn't have, however, is much sympathy for the driver of the van. In an August 30 interview with Maine's Bangor Daily News, he said he wants Smith, 42, off the road. "He doesn't have anything I want, believe me," the author said. "The only thing that he has that I would like to see taken away is his driver's license." There's no word on how long before the writer will actually be fit enough to lay waste to the minivan, however. King hasn't spent all his time recovering, destroying vans and plotting revenge against Smith. His latest authorly effort, Hearts in Atlantis, hit bookstore shelves earlier this month.
