OK, so by now we all know Aaliyah died. Thankfully, most of you aren't on services like AOL so you don't have to hear all the bullshit about musical deaths from teenyboppers. My thoughts are pretty typical of the majority of people, though.
Why DO we give a shit about celebrity death, anyway? I mean...a few have affected me, but not to break-down sobbing points...or suicide attempts....

Do I care? Generally speaking, no. Not at all, in fact. I have no emotional attachments to any celebrities, so their deaths leave me cold. Am I supposed to give a damn? Perhaps, out of respect for my fellow human beings. But not because they were big media figures with egos the size of Mount Everest. Sucks that it happened, my condolences to the families, but that's as far as I'll go.
What I find so hypocritical (downright obnoxious even) about these situations, is the enormous amount of attention they receive. Just because one of the victims was famous, the accident suddenly becomes newsitem number one, whereas any other 'ordinary' incident doesn't even make it past page 4 in the local paper. I do not like what this implies.
Having said that, I think there are varying levels of 'affectedness'. Those closest to me rate the highest on the scale, immediately followed by friends. Influential people (such as Malcolm X, Ghandi, etc) are next on the list and so on, right down to the absolute bottom.

Of course to set the record streight she was never a "crack whore" .
The fact of the matter is , like any well known person her death is going to get more attention than the death of some guy who lived in a Montana shack and spoke to maybe 4 people in a 10 year span.
The reason it gets so much attention is because it was unexpected and she was well known , the same goes for people who arnt celeberties I mean if right now the Mayor of your town died in a car crash , I'm sure the local stations would be running things non stop where as the National networks would probley run some short blurb. Its Life.
Its just logical, if your well known anything that happens in your life is going to get some kind of "press" whether it be Selling a Million records or your local High School team winning some championship.
Personally I'm not going to go and burst into tears because of her deaths , but as a hip hop fan I do know her story and this death was unexpected , she was really up and comming , she released her last album a month ago and was slated to appear in the Matrix 2.
Its a Shame and my heart goes out to her family.
The day Shatner or Nimoy die , I'm sure most of you will be saying "Its a Sad day for Trek" or in some other way blowing it all out of propertion.

Now, I don't know about Aaliyah ... hell, the name doesn't ring any bells ... and she may well have been a crack whore. I don't know. I think Shik was just trying to make a point about how some people get a lot of media coverage and some don't.

But that still doesnt change the context , he said

which implies she was at one time a crack whore , which is false.
She was 22 when she died , and she has been singing since she was 11 , she started on tour with Gladys Knight at that age.
I am a fan of her work but I mean really I never met her so its not like It affected me on an emotional level but its still a damn shame , getting cut down in the prime of ones life no matter who they are is sad.

She was cast for The Matrix Reloaded... Not to make her death sound silly, but I hope they didn't do a lot of scenes with her in it, with the cost of those special effects and all...
They didn't make a lot of fuzz about it here, although it still made the news on several channels here. I think fans have a right to know that their idol has died...

How was the media coverage when Jeff Buckley died? Did you "give a shit" about his death, Shik? Or was it "Puuleease, he's gone already, you're cutting into Highlander soon!"
