Forgive my ignorance of performing maintenance on Windows systems, but can't you get the computer to boot from a CD -- something like Norton Disk Doctor -- and try to fix the problem that way?
If my iBook had a problem like that, I'd just pop the CD into the tray and hold down the "C" key during the next reboot (to tell the computer to boot from the CD drive rather than the hard drive).
But I dunno if Windows has anything similar. I would hope so...

Its that damn MSBlast worm that seems to hit it big yesterday. My roomate and I boht have XP on our computers, we have dial up and my roomate computer got it almost immediately while he was on the net yesterday, whereas I was on for much longer and never got a bite. I haven't clicked on anyones above links, but the Windows Update page has the patch that should have prevented it in the first place. Did so, at least for me.

Actually I switched from Suck-O DSL to cable modem yesterday and as soon as the DSL (bellsouth's) firewall went down I got nailed. (Barry White voice) Much love to all those that helped me fix this though.

Also, dunno if you are still having reboot probs.
But the simpliest way to stop it is to run:
"services.msc" --> Remote Procedure Class --> Recovery --> Restart Service
Change it to anything but "restart the computer"...

And uncheck "Automatically reboot" (Control Panel ==>> System ==>> Advanced ==>> Startup and Recovery) for added insurance.

Yeah, I had to do all that via the Control panel and switch all the RTC to "Take No Action" just to have enough time between crashes to get the patch! All is well now. ....untill next time, anyway.
As a footnote, I have aquired three numbers for MS customer service that aparantly are always busy 24/7 of are only a placebo to allow real people not to have to deal with us.

To be fair (though lord knows why), they were probably busy yesterday because lots of people were phoning up wondering why their computers kept resetting.
XP does have a built in firewall, y'know, if you haven't got a third party one. I've no idea if it's any good though.

Any Microsoft-designed firewall would probably be best equated to a kitchen colander.
It simply amazes me how worried people are getting about all these recurring security holes in Windows, and yet so many people seem to just accept it as a necessary evil...

Okay: a new issue. I searched for MSBLAST (the worm's name)and found it. Unfortunately, it won'y allow me to delete it and virus scanners don't hit it (even after I changed it's name to "virus!). It's telling me to make sure the program is not running. My XP patch is preventing the program from doing anything but I sure don't want in in my machine. Ideas?
