Well, I've been having a lot of fun with e-mail lately. What I need, in short, is a reliable e-mail server which ISN'T going to crash for a month or so. I don't know if I want to use hotmail or yahoo because I imagine they get spammed a lot. Any ideas?

Well, if you have a spare computer, you can always set up your own SMTP/POP3/IMAP server (both under Linux and under Windows, though I wouldn't recommend the latter), but that'd only be as reliable as your ISP.

I think I'd go with Yahoo, actually. I mean, I haven't used Hotmail in years, but, at the time, you could set up an address, never ever use it, and still get dozens of spams a week.

Yahoo seems easier to use and overall, I just plain like it better than Hotmail. You can always create a seperate account for things you sign up for, and only use the other for personal e-mails. Just don't a simple username like "bob25" and you should be fine.

The amount of spam I've got from my hotmail account has gone done drastically recently, for some reason. Possibly some new filters. It's also dead easy to collect your hotmail email using OE, if that sort of thing excites you.
But then, I have mates who have no trouble with Yahoo mail. So, really, up to you.

I use cluemail. Three months, no spam at all. You have to pay for pop access, but I rather like IMAP so far.

Most spam comes from people forgetting to tick (or untick) the "send me promotions box" when they have to sign up for things on line, doesn't it? As long as you are careful about not handing out your email address to everyone, you should be okay with spam.

If anyone is desperate for a POP mailbox and doesn't want to use one of the freemail services, I wouldn't mind setting one up for them on my website (st-minutiae.com).

Or if you sign guestbooks, post on usenet without masking it, or otherwise post it publicly. Spammers scour the intrarweb for e-mail addresses to send shit to. Many are also generated, such as user1, user 2, etc., and I've also been getting randomnames at mordea.com lately. Makes me wish I never set up an e-mail catchall.

I had my e-mail catch-all address set up for a while, but then I realized that there was no real purpose to it, because anyone who was dumb enough to not just click on the link from my website doesn't deserve to have their mail delivered.

Ok, what about e-mail filters for say Outlook? Or the built in filters for AOL and Yahoo? Don't they work out?
