Big deal, I say. I hardly read comics anymore (though admittedly I've been dusting off my ancient Superman collection in preparation for Superman Returns), but I know changing character stuff is hardly new in the comics world. In the various WB cartoons, for example, we've seen both Lex Luthor and Harvey Dent grace the screen as black men. The media release is obviously meant to boost comics sales, though I won't be picking one up regardless.
However, a little research shows that a couple of DC characters are now gay - Detective Montoya from Batman, Maggie Sawyer from Superman, etc. Though Sawyer, who is a butch, cigar-chomping officer in the Metropolis special crimes unit, was obstensibly a lesbian from the start.

Harvey Dent was never black in the cartoons. You're thinking of the 1989 Batman movie, where he was portrayed by Billy Dee Williams. I heard somewhere that Williams knew that Dent eventually became Two-Face, and so had it written in his contract that either he would play Two-Face in a later film or he would have to get paid a ton of money. Good sense on his part.
I have heard the argument that the DCAU Lex Luthor was supposed to be black, but I just don't see it personally.

So Lex and Harvet are TAN- biiig deal. all other DCAU black characters are noticibly darker: Lucius Fox, John Stewart, Barbara's husband and Terry's sidekick (forget her name) in Batman Beyond, etc.
It the new Batwoman is from yet another "Elseworlds" thing anyway.

The idea that Lex & Two Face were black in the animated shows is a common misconception. Caused mostly by the fact that the caucasian skin tones used on the shows were unusually 'warm' and the way those characters in particular were drawn made their lips look a little thicker than the norm.
As for this new Batwoman...I don't mind her being a lesbian (some of my best friends are lesbians) but I can't help but miss Cassandra. She was such an interesting character. I notice the this new design smacks of Terry McGinnes, I wonder when they're going to use him in propper continuity.

Lesbians in DC comics? There are hardly enough to go around in Marvel. Why don't we start there? If there are anybody left over, they can go to DC. Like Penance and Marrow. They're very hot but, you know, awkward? Pointy bits allover.
