The cynic in me would point out that there's something vaguely narcissistic in always worrying about what your neighbor thinks of you. But then, it's no less true in terms of the general public consciousness.
Here's an opposite argument: why are we supposed to pay attention to you just because you're next door? What if we don't feel like coming over for coffee every day? Constantly leaving poorly-disguised hints like "I sure wish more people would visit" indicates a strange kind of internal emotional insecurity.
But I think I'd better stop trying to psychoanalyze a national mentality, on either side of the border.
(Seriously, I enjoyed my visit to Nova Scotia years ago. If I traveled more often, I'd probably visit again.)
