I liked this episode. Could have gone horribly wrong in a lot of places, but didn't. At least, IMHO.
Number One! It was good that they kept her pretty mysterious. I haven't heard a potential actual name for her that wasn't some goofy pun on the number one. Rebecca Romijn did a good job in the role.
Once again, I am underwhelmed by the whole "we have to catch up to Spock" angle.
The Enterprise doesn't have the holographic comm system because Pike hates it and had his chief engineer (not Scotty yet) rip it out.
I heart Reno. She's the voice of how stupid the spore drive is, even more so than Pike.
Speaking of the spore drive, its use damages the home of May's species. Another reason it doesn't see widespread deployment, I suppose.
Tilly gets kidnapped into the Upside Down by the Demogorgon. Oh come on, you were all thinking it.
Saru thinks he's dying, but all that happens is that his threat ganglia fall out, leaving him free of the fear that is so pervasive in Kelpiens. I'm wondering if the "Ba'ul" that we assumed kidnapped Kelpiens to eat them are, in fact, more post-vaharai Kelpiens. Maybe they'll be a threat later on?

This was a beautiful episode. Saru is the emotional center of the show and Doug Jones was in extra-rare form this week. I even felt for the space-spider-whatever a bit.
I had the exact same thought about the Kelpiens and the hunters. I think Saru just hit puberty.
I’m also annoyed by how they’re stretching out the “chase down Spock” storyline, but it’s mainly because I don’t have much faith in the payoff. I hope I’m wrong.
But seeing the lengths that Pike and Number One are going to here makes me more appreciative of what Spock did for Pike in “The Menagerie.” I’m more interested in Spock’s relationship with them than with Burnham.
