Hm... In "The Visitor" (I think... it's that ep where Jake Sisko is old and telling about how his father got thrown into some weird temporal thing), they suggest that, by the mid-2400s, SF is already using 3D interfaces. Strange that his disappearance would lead to the development of those interfaces, while his not disappearing somehow prevents their invention all the way into the 2800s...
