Now, before we continue, can I just ask: is this the 5-minute argument or the full half hour?

Frank and ID: please try to avoid continuing on in a private argument you'll never resolve, to the exclusion of anyone else's contributions, or else I'll have to get the hose to separate you! 8)

Anyway, in response to TSN's post, navies do not put all their frigates into a box, but the ships are still only used in their capacity as warships.

Still used as warships, eh? So, they go around and shoot... what? TWA flights off of New York? UFOs? Swallows?

Yes. Seriously, you know what I mean; patrols and such. Again, they're not used for fishing.

Maybe in peacetime ship captains in the US Navy go and shoot 18 holes of golf of the deck, like in Down Periscope.

Yes, the movie was based on an ancient WWII sub.

Well here are the classifications as I see them being used:

Explorer: very large, multi-role, Starfleet (and to a certain extent the Federation) in microcosm. can do everything. Well armed. (Galaxy, Nebula, Sovereign)

Cruiser: medium-large, multi-role, a second rate Explorer including the Explorers of the previous generation. Some specilisation. (Akira, Ambassador, Excelsior, Niagara, Cheyenne)

Scout: small, multi-role, a third rate explorer.
More specilaistaion. (Intrepid, Freedom).

Frigate: medium, patrol/defence. Well armed for their size. (New Orleans, Steamrunner)

Escort: small, escort/defence. (Defiant - not typical, Sabre - I know the DS9 TM says cruiser but according to that book Starfleet has nothing but cruisers)

Surveyor: small-medium, science. Light armament. (Oberth, Olympic)

Add transports, freighters, small craft, etc. as you like. Destroyers may or may not exist in the 24th century. In the 23rd century they are:
Destroyer: small-medium, combat orientated. (Saladin, Abbe, Larson)

In the 23rd century you don't get Explorers but you do get Dreadnoughts, Perimiter Action Ships and the like.
