I wasn't too sure whether to put this here, and I'll admit it doesn't seem to have much to do with trek, but hey! You lot are sorta clever, so here goes.

Suppose I have two images in PSP. And suppose I wanted to fade one into the other, across the page. How the hell would I do that? I have an idea it involves either masking or adjustement layers, but I've had a fiddle and I'm stumped.

And if you know how to do it in Photoshop, that'll do too. I can probably figure out how to do it in PSP from that.

Thanks. Unless no-one helps, in which case, I hope you all burn horribly.

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

Move over, copy/paste one of the pictures on to the other as you might suspect. You should have two active layers now, 'Background' (your original picture) and 'Layer 1' (the one you just moved over). Now select 'Overlay' from the dropdown menu on the Layers panel, and the two will appear to have faded into each other. Hope this helps.

You are correct in assuming that layer masks are what you want to do. I don't know PSP from shinola, but from what I gather it's so close to Photoshop that it boggles the mind why Adobe isn't suing their panties off. So assuming that your images are on two layers here goes:

1) Create a layer mask for the top layer.

2) Within the layer mask create a gradient going from white (where you want the overlay to appear to black where you want it to disappear (Be masked out.) The intervening levels of gray in your gradient will be sampled proportionately from the appropriate layer.

That's it. You'll want to play with this a bit to get the desired effect, but it should be straight ahead. Note that you can create some nifty effects by applying the gradient to a selected area and not the entire layer...

Okay, I'll assume you've got image2 pasted as a second layer on top of image1. In the Layer Palette, make sure the image2 (upper) layer is selected, and click the button just above it that looks like a mask w/ a red star on it. That will create the mask. Now, go up to the Masks menu and click Edit. Now you're editing the mask (though you can't really tell from the way the picture looks). Use the Flood Fill to put a black-to white (or white-to-black, depending on how you want it to fade) gradient over the image. Now it should look the way you want it.

Sorry, I meant to thank everyone.

It's a bit frustrating. Having no artistic skills and no experience with computer art packages since Deluxe Paint on the Amiga, I'm having to figure most of this stuff out by trail and error (since the manual scared the life out of me). I'm sure that I'm doing simple things in the most convoluted way possible. Oh well.

Pretty much, although showing you will make UM point and say "I told you so! I am the Slipper King!" Since I myself am the Slipper King, I laugh at his comfort shoes.

Er, anyway:

 -

Basically, it was for the shafts of light coming through the hair. I wanted to fade them as they went down the page. And they do! Sort of. It's not quite what I wanted, but it's okay.

No one cares, do they?

The Daedalus class looks shit.
