I just checked the status on the upcoming third part of the Dune prequels, "DUNE: HOUSE CORRINO", and suffice it to say, I got more news than I bargained for!

Here are the meat n' potatoes of it... Some details might be considered semi-spoilers as they give away the main plots in the upcoming books, so you have to judge for yourselves.

"On the very day that DUNE: HOUSE HARKONNEN hit the
New York Times bestseller list, Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson accepted an offer from Tor Books to do a new DUNE trilogy based on the seminal events of the Butlerian Jihad, the epochal conflict between humans and thinking machines set many thousands of years in Dune's past."

"Establishing the genesis of Frank Herbert's DUNE universe, THE BUTLERIAN JIHAD Trilogy will detail
the saga of the century-long conflict, as well as the original breach that formed the deadly feud between
House Atreides and House Harkonnen."

"The story will include Tio Holtzman's development of foldspace and shield technology, how House Corrino establishes the Imperium, how the Zensunni Wanderers escape slavery and flee to the desert world of Arrakis.
Readers will also see the seeds of DUNE's famous Great Schools of the Mentats, the Bene Gesserit, the Suk Doctors, and the Swordmasters."

"The contract for three books calls for the volumes to be published annually, so DUNE fans will have plenty more to read in years to come.
Tentative titles are: Book 1, THE BUTLERIAN JIHAD, Book 2, THE MACHINE CRUSADE, and Book 3, THE BATTLE OF CORRIN."

"Brian and Kevin also have Frank Herbert's complete outline for "DUNE 7," a sequel to CHAPTERHOUSE: DUNE, which is intended to be the grand finale for the entire series."

Now you have to agree that even if they won't come out juuust as good as you hoped them to be it's still great that some effort's been put in reviving the DUNE-universe.
I felt very sad after finishing "Chapterhouse: Dune", reading the epilogue and knowing he wouldn't complete the series. To me, this was the best that could've happened.
A friend has taped the three-parted DUNE: Miniseries as well, so although I haven't watched it yet, happy days are indeed here to stay!!!

I've only read Dune: House Atredies and the other 6 Dune books and I have a copy of the Dune Encyclopedia.

Now, although I did like D:HA, I have heard nothing but scorn for D:HH which has put me off from getting it just yet. I'll wait till paperback and then i'll read it.

I'm not convinced totally that Kevin Anderson and Brian Herbert are up to the task of another series of Dune books. Although as I said before, some parts of D:HA I liked while other parts made me cringe. Much as the same way the mini-series did.

We shall see if the quality improves in the novels.

Not that I want to tarnish my reputation as a compulsive liker of things, but the fact that Anderson and Brian Herbert are writing Dune books does not fill my heart with joy. It fills it with a very curious feeling that seems utterly unlike joy, though, like joy, it sometimes flares up in little packets of brightly colored flame.

Kevin Anderson sucks.

Nothing makes my heart weep more than those who claim "Jedi Academy" trilogy is better than the "Thrawn" trilogy. Sheeesh.

But seriously. Anderson's a hack. I don't see how he got anything published, and I've not liked one of his books.

'nuff said.

i've only read house atreides so far. when the rest of the series goes to paperback, I'll probably puchase them too...if only because the original Dune series is the best thing i've ever read. I DO wonder why Anderson was included in the project...I've always assumed he was just a friend of Brian. It's not because of the fan response, that's for sure. I've never heard ANYONE praise his work on this series...

If it's because of the sales figures from the first preludes trilogy that KJA got the nod to do more, I have to say: any jackass could write a Dune book these days and have it sell a billion copies. It's a sure thing with science fiction fans.

anyway...

Those Dune Encyclopedias are damn near impossible to get for less than fifty dollars these days. as far as I know, it's the only thing related to the old series that I haven't read cover to cover...is it any good? if so, i might just go ahead and buy it off ebay or the like

They're pretty rare, at least in the U.S. If you do happen to run across one someday...
