Remember the Political Compass site that was posted here twice before? I happened to come across a reference to it at another site and decided to take the quiz again to see how my politics have changed in the past few years. I got a -7.38/-7.08. Apparently, as I get older, I'm turning into quite the commie anarchist.

Back when it was first posted, I drew up a chart to show all our scores in relation to one another. I've decided to update it, using the scores from the last time the topic came up, and my new score. Anyone else care to see how the inexorable flow of time has affected their sensibilities?

Some of them I didn't really think that long about - so it mightn't be true and I've taken a different website's test like this and I was in a different position. Anyway my quick go at this resulted in:

Economic Left/Right: -5.75

I guess this means that, unless I'm looking for a fight, I should avoid talking politics around here.

Holy shit, what happened to Omega?

The test has also changed quite a bit. There are plenty of new questions. They may have adjusted the forumla as well...

So over the years, I've moved a bit left, and a bit authoritarian.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

According to the test's FAQ :
"21. Politics have moved, but you're still using the old economic parameters.
Some critics have argued that, because the universal political centre has moved to the right, our axes should correspondingly move to the right. This, however, would not indicate how far one way or the other society has shifted. It could not convey paradoxes such as the fact that, in the UK, New Labour occupies an economic position to the right of pre-Thatcher Conservatives. Where was the centre, for example, in Apartheid South Africa ? In Third Reich society, such a skewed analysis might show a Nazi opposed to the death chambers as representing liberal opinion.

"Narrowing the standard political goalposts to accommodate merely the range of mainstream opinion within any given society at a given time is not only historically uninstructive; it is unscientific."

So, presumably, they haven't changed the formula. I did notice that some of the questions were different, though.

"So over the years, I've moved a bit left, and a bit authoritarian."

You're one of four so far who have moved up and left. Five of us have moved down and left. And then there's Mucus, who's done both.

And then Siegfried. Who's just weird, apparently.

I think Omey's faked his latest score. No way could he have a nearly-perfect straight line from three results. It's a plot! He's going to suddenly reveal he never changed (like the Soviet Union in "Simpson Tide") and triumphantly go out to bomb an abortion clinic!

I might have to drop Orion a line, see what his latest result is. And someone poke Snay (aka JeffK) with a sharp stick.

Many countries already have "I hate you" days.
Iran has one whole day dedicated to hating/destroying Israel (though every day seems to fall into that category, I guess).

Er...what the fuck? It's really Iran continuing to provoke Israel however possible (dont know why- eventually, Iran would lose badly in a military conflict) and calling it a response to the cartoons.

Y'know...the ones that started in Denmark (hardly a Jewish stronghold in Europe).

"That cartoon that Danish guy made has been stirring up a lot of trouble lately."

There were twelve cartoons. By different people.

"Sadly, the Iranian (idiot) president is calling for the state newspapers to have a 'Challenge the Holocaust' run of comics 'to see if the west can really practice freedom of speach then'."

"Speech". And I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that, if they do it, the grand total of Iranian embassies that get burned down over it will be less than one.

Maybe I've just been called Jesus -- or Jeebus -- often enough that I've gone flash-blind to that sort of "insult", but it seems to my Psych 101 learnin' to be a very insecure response on the part of Iran/Muslims. I mean... it's almost like reading an account of some ghetto kid getting shot over a pair of shoes. They have no real sense of self-worth, so they ascribe so much worth or importance to arbitrary things outside the self that they have to defend something that others who are more secure in themselves would deem silly.

I'm proud of being Scottish (among other things), but it doesn't really matter beyond the realm of personal beliefs, so if someone points and laughs at the guy wearing the skirt, I don't feel like I have to kill him in a gory public spectacle to prove myself.

What are they protecting? Muhammed won't care! He's been dead for fifteen centuries! If those people offended by these cartoons were truly secure in themselves, they'd see them and feel pity for the poor Europeans who obviously don't understand Islam and its Prophet, and so fear it and feel the need to denegrate it. And then go on with their lives of quiet piety.

Wouldn't THAT be a fucking wonderful change of pace for the planet?

Sweden, that is my country, did. Just because we are their neighbors. Also, norwegian flags have been burnt because they look similar (red-white-blue to Denmark's red-white). And I think some swiss ones, also red-white and the name is sometimes mixed up with Sweden's.

There's one thing that's a sure-fire argument against killing to defend the honor of your God: if your God was actually offended, and actually wanted someone to die because of it, do you REALLY think he'd need YOU to take care of it for him?

That was Iraq's reasoning back before Israel blew up it's nuclear reactor/refinery waaay back.

Israel wont (cant, really) allow anyone declaring they "want to kill all the Jews" to develop a nuke. They dont need to decalare a war- only launch an airstrike or three on select targets.
They'll suffer an increase in suicide bombers, but compared with a nuke, it's minor.

While the notion of a pre-emptive war seems an oxymoron, it's a grim reality there.

What's senseless is that Iran's president seems intent on provoking Israel as much as possible- not making anything easier on muslims anywhere and even drawing fire from Egypt and Saudi Arabia for it.

It makes me wonder when Jews, Muslims, and Christians can't get along. I mean, they worship the same fucking God... Sure the scriptures and teachings are different. But it's still the same God they're all worshiping...

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

Depends on how you mean the term. My conception of God as a Christian is different from a Jew's conception of God in some ways, and a Muslim's concept of God is far more different. They may all attribute the same historical events to God, but their understanding of his nature is different. So it's the same being, sure, but that doesn't make any difference if one or all groups have a mistaken understanding of how He operates.

And I thought I was still in the economic centre of the compass. WTF?

Well, actually, after some thinking and a review of the questions, my sudden shift to the left may be due to the fact that I have lost a lot of faith in the corporate world, mostly in light of the business scandals that are going on these days, and the exploitation that takes place within such corporations..... But that alone should not be a deciding factor on my shift to the left. For starters, I would have considered voting Conservative in the last Canadian election, in which I would have favoured the tax benefits towards myself. Unfortunately, the conservative party had certain policies that would have been on the upper side of the Authoritarian/Libertarian scale. That and the fact that Stephen Harper would most likely be a patsy of George W. Bush.
