I got this from Amazon. Have any other images been released?

Isn't that a pic from last year's calendar?

Maybe it's a place-holder picture. Or they are just going to do a rehash?

Mark Nguyen (Mojo's Flare insider) [Smile] said that Mojo wasn't doing it this year - which sucks. Who will be doing it this year?

Mojo had two other people helping him out in the ST: Magazine issues that redid the ST2 Mutara Nebula battle. Maybe it's one of them.

That actually is a pic from the 2003 calendar. It could be a placeholder or perhaps it's just for the cover and won't actually be used for any months or the centerfold.

I've ordered the 2004 Stardate, TNG and SotL-calendars as soon as Amazon made them available for preorder back in January I think. I didn't get any ST-calendar this year (they weren't available or just sold out anywhere I looked for them, not even fanshops were able to get them). What they still had was the Enterprise-calendar. Ugh. Got the Simpsons-calendar instead.

January: Cpt. Archer in tights

February: Archer in car repair shop, shirtless, one tire in each hand

March: Archer in plaid shirt, denim pants, holding chainsaw (sweaty brow)

April: Archer in the nip, holding kitten to cover genitals

Kewel! We get something then an asteroid for my birth month!

Woo Hoo!

I'm excited about this calendar now. I wasn't going go buy it at first, but when I saw that "Little nebula" entry... [Big Grin]

What about some REAL suggestions for pics/pages/months?

I'd like to see the Ambassador Class at work.

A skirmish between a few Hideki's and a New Orleans and an Ambassador class from the Cardassian wars! [Smile]

A view looking out from the hanger-bay of Deep Space Station K7 with The Enterprise and Sherman's planet in the distance

Wolf 359.

On the Dominion Wars-page (the game) they had a nice image of a Galaxy burning in space with a few smaller cardassian ships still attacking it. Parts of the hull were missing and most of the upper saucer was gone and you could see the frame structure. I always liked that one.

Maybe Romulus, with a Starbase (always impressive) and some Warbirds (and Valdores, if they have to [Wink] )

More 22nd century Strfleet tech (I'm thinking of the new ships from "the expanse" right now, maybe several NX-ships fighting the Romulans in the soon-to-be-non-canon war. [Smile] )

I believe we had an extensive thread when Mojo was asking for "wha'cha wanna see" for both the calendar and UF (RIP). Where'd that one go? We had some good ideas in there.

Mark

Cardassian War scenes with all those lovely Wolf 359 Galaxy kitbashes.

Or, a bit more ambitious, the Romulans 'liberating' Benzar. Valdores and D'deridexii in Benzite orbit, Reman cannon fodder and Romulan soldiers, attacking Dominion forces at night, Federation troops joining the morning after.

AAAAAANYWAY...

Serious, huh...?

I'd like to see some TOS Era and TOS Movie Era ship designs. Something like the Federation and Klingon fleets that were about to attack each other in "Errand of Mercy". I realize it sorta goes against the TOS standard to show that sort of space combat, as realistically, if you've got weapons that are good out to thousands of kilometers, you don't want to be w/in spitting distance of the enemy, but it would look kewel. Or at least show the Fed or Klingon Fleets, sorta like some of the images at Mateen Greenway's site.

For the other ships, maybe some scenes using mostly TOS Movie Era ships relating to The Tomed Incident, which occured in the 2310's. Some Connies, Miranda's and maybe a Constellation class with an Excelsior as the flag ship taking on some brand-spankin'-new-for-the calendar Romulan ships. [Big Grin]

I'd also like to see some civilian ships from various Era's. Would also be kind of kewel to see some bustling stabases, as was already mentioned. However, I'd like to see more civilian type stuff.

I've had it pre-ordered from Amazon for quite a while. They indicate it has already been released, but apparently their supply has always been low, so they need to have it (special) ordered from another warehouse before they can ship it to me. I still don't have it yet and I haven't seen it anywhere else. I wonder what's really going on here for it to take so long to actually be received by purchasers. They've been big sellers in the past but I've always seen copies available.

I was in Halifax, NS for a sci-fi con on the weekend and a local shop had two there. If it hadn't been $20 I'd have picked one up. The cover is as it was shown earlier in the thread with the Starfleet ships facing off with the Klingons.

I should've taken more care to remember the various shots inside but there's a couple of NX-01, one of which is an under construction shot in the drydock. Another features two Constitution refits passing one another in an asteroid field.

I wish I could remember more of them, but it did look like a good calendar. I'll ask for it for my birthday. I definitely want it. By comparison, I think it's better than this years SOTL calendar.

Goddammit, it's a crime that all that work was done, and we were continually teased with the possibility (they even advertised it in the '01 or '02 calendar!), and now we can't even see whatever preliminary work was done on it!

And all we can do is keep buying whatever they deign to offer, in the hopes that one day they'll decide to give us something we really want. Because if we STOP buying their stuff, then they'll end up cutting out the entire line altogether.

(I know, I know; we Treknologists are only a small fraction of the actual market... it still annoys me to no end! [Mad] )

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

Yup, they left off Takei's b-day. Anyway:

Cover: refit E-nil and unnamed/unlabeled Excelsior class ship face off 3 K'Tinga class Battlecruisers. (Surprisingly, the E-nil's impulse engines aren't lit)

January: An NX class ship under construction at a drydock facility. The starboard nacelle is about to be attached as is the port nacelle pylon. The port nacelle is in the background arriving, yet it doesn't look like it's being towed anywhere. It's just floating there. Hull plating on parts of the saucer are missing as yard engineers are seen working on the ship.

February: refit E-nil and refit Lexington NCC-1709 are seen meeting each other in an asteroid field. Agian the E-nil's impulse engines are not lit.

March: E-nil and damaged unnamed/unlabeled pre-refit Connie class ship (presumably Constellation NCC-1017) attacking Doomsday Machine. Phaser beam coming from the Constellation.

April: Voyager and Delta Flyer next to the moon. Delta Flyer facing Voyager though. Voyager clearly a drawing as name is smeared next to forward docking port. The Flyer does appear to be CGI.

May: refit E-nil in V'Ger with the bridge to the actual Voyager 6 probe. CGI Kirk, Spock, Ilia probe, Decker, and McCoy on saucer. Good recreation of scene if not actual footage used in the movie.

June: Damaged Enterprise NX-01 in the Romulan minefield. The mines are visible as are the 2 Birds-of Prey. Not an actual scene from the episode.

Center: Close-up of three Starfleet personnel in spacesuits on the Enterprise NX-01 saucer near the deflector dish. Inspection pod with what appears to be Archer is nearby.

July: Voyager flying-by near the surface of a large body of water. Lightening streaks in background.

August: A shuttlepod approaching the Enterprise NX-01. Close-up of the underside of the Enterprise.

September: The Enterprise NCC-1701-E at Romulus. It's the Nemesis CGI model with the weapons additions. Not an actual scene from the movie.

October: Enterprise NX-01 faceoff with 2 Vulcan ships (I forget the class name) and 3 alien ships (I don't think we've seen these before, but I could be wrong) in orbit of unknown planet.

November: Enterprise NCC-1701-D and unknown/unlabeled Excelsior class ship flyby in Earth orbit. Double-mushroom type spacedock in near background. Mars also in background. The E-D is clearly a drawing as the registry number is off-center on the ventral side of the saucer. Also upon close inspection, an escape pod is also not drawn on.

December: E-nil meets the Botany Bay. Not a scene from the episode.

Thanks for the list!

Nothing from DS9 - and more importantly, nothing "unseen". That is to say, nothing not including ships or CG models of the main ships in the franchise (like the shot of random BoPs, or a Miranda burning up in the atmosphere). It's that variation and expansion of the Trek universe that I buy these things for in the first place. Grumble.

I want Mojo back.

Mark

PS - The October shot sounds like one of the Andorian episodes from last year..?

Agreed - I want Mojo and his silky shirts back! [Smile]

Mark can you let him know!?!

Can you also pass on the idea about him doing a wall poster i.e. a cool scene a la sotl - but bigger - more room to do stuff. Beauty shots everything - to put on the wall. There haven't been any Trek posters in over a decade!! (I'm not talking pull-outs people).

I'd buy it in ONE SECOND and it'd go STRAIGHT ON MY WALL!

Andrew

Those pictures don't look to bad!! Darren Dochterman's pics are the best.

Doug Drexler's pic of the space dock and the Gal and Excelsior - look like something I could piece together in Photoshop. [Razz] Why is Mars so close?

His Voyager looks like a cut and paste too.

Bonchune's Refits in an Asteroid field is a bit... boring.

E-E - v. boring.

The three best are Voyager over the Water, The Botany Bay - the E-Nil looks great and the attack on the Planet Killer.

That original CGI of the Doomsday Machine would almost make the whole calendar worth getting! Dang, that looks sweet!

True, the range and originality isn't what it used to be (dammit, we need Mojo back!), but the effects still look pretty darn good... at least in the thumbnails. [Wink] I can still use some wall artwork... at least, to supplement the stuff I've already got, including a Starfleet Museum "original" poster...

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

I like this one a HELL of a lot better than the artsy shots of last years calander.

The E-nil with Botany Bay is my favorite because the E-nil actually has some subtle azec patterns!

Sweeet.

I really like the Enterprise E shot (as a modeler it's great refrence) but it's not very imaginative.
I shot of her being towed back to spacedock with half a saucer by a new fed ship would have been more to my liking. [Wink]

The calander's 20 plus inches across.
My scanner (at work, no less) is not.

Posted by Masao (Member # 232) on :

I just received my calendar. I'm a bit disappointed, since the images don't look much better than what you can see at Scifi Meshes. Some of them have a posed CGI composition-look about them rather than looking like still frames from the show or real-life photos. Maybe it's because the lighting is off, with the backgrounds not matching the foregrounds? A few have Poser people that look bad. (Also, too much NX-01)

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

The only thing I don't like is the complete omission of anything from Deep Space Nine!!!!
fucking VOYAGER has two pics that look just like all the other Voyager calander art and the NX-01 facing down the Andorians and Vulcans looks like a screenshot that was rendered over.
Even the angle is the same. [Roll Eyes]

A nice shot of the DS9 facing off the Klingons or Dominion just prior to the battle would have been nice....(sigh!)

Not if it is as bad as Masao says... then lets be thankful there was no DS9 connection!

I still think Mojo should do a big wall poster of DS9 art.

Yeesh, folks - as crappy as the art may be (and I'm sure there has to be some redeeming features), I'd think the thumbnails would be sufficient...

Mark

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

The artwork is NOT crappy in any way.
Some pics are more inspired and have better composition than others though.

Posted by Masao (Member # 232) on :

I'm not saying that the work is "crappy" exactly, but I'm not extremely impressed. The images obviously settle for a CGI form of reality without looking like they exist in the real world. For example:
1. A shot of V'ger's cobblestone walkway to the refit Ent has these Poser (?) figures (representing the Big three, Decker, and Ilia), with tiny heads and overly tall bodies)
2. The centerfold shot of the NX-01 crew standing on the hull again has fake-looking and strangley posed Poser figures.
3. Two pics with NX-01 (with the Romulans and with the ring ships) have stagy-looking compositions in which everything is perfectly placed to not overlap each other. A 2-D composition only.
4. The textures on the big "Canada arm" for NX-01 in drydock is supposed to be some sort of insulation sheath but looks likes like a standard rendered texture.
5. The shot of the Doomsday Machine uses this same texture. This pic also has a strong yellow light coming from the maw that nonsensically bathes the port side fo Constellation.

Posted by Axeman 3D (Member # 1050) on :

I feel i have to jump in and speak up for all the CGI artists on this board and elsewhere, the pictures are very realistic, for a given value of 'real'. None of the stuff depicted in the shots is real, it's all pure conjecture and imagination. Since we are human however we are programmed to be very, very good at spotting and recognising other humans, so those tend to be the flaws that leap out at us in CGI pictures. The CG in the shows get away with it by adding movement, either animated or motion captured, which helps to sell the 'humanity' of the character being protrayed, but that's not an option here. The only thing they could do would be to composite in real humans in suits that were photographed and lit for the occasion, and I guarantee that it would cost more for one such shot than it cost to produce the entire calander.

Please also bare in mind that it's still art; the composition, lighting, texturing and all the other elements were created and posed by a person with an aesthetic vision which may differ radically from your own. Although many people see CGI as making 'realistic' scenes or pictures, the individual CG artist is adding a lot of themselves to the piece. The software is rarely capable of making a scene look real without a lot of tweaking and direction from the artist. If the scene with the planet-killer was lit totally realistically, you'd see practically nothing.

Having said that I have to agree that some of the shots are a little disappointing in both content and execution. When i saw the E-nil with the Botany Bay my hackles instantly went up, it looks awfully like my mesh of the BB in that thumbnail. I'd need to see it closer to check if it's a rehash or not, although I'd assume they wouldn't be so crass as to nick a publically available mesh and not give credit. Or am i just flattering myself? [Big Grin]

Still it could have been a little darker and less colorful...like the BB pic.

For small thumbnails, check this thread everyone who has not/will not get the calender but interested in seeing what the hoohah is about.

Having checked out the scans, I gotta say two the majority of the images come across as too busy and not having a clear focus. For instance, the planet killer and the two starships aren't enough...there has to be planet rubble as well as sparks coming off the Constellation. Voyager and the Flyer AND a planet AND a nebula. NX-01 and two Vulcan ships, AND...

Less is more.

Posted by Axeman 3D (Member # 1050) on :

yeah, a couple of those images are a little too busy for my liking as well, particularly the one with all the crap in orbit around the NX-01. When you have a large format to fill however the tendency is to cram in as much interesting stuff as you think you can get away with, and if their models are anything like mine then they dont bare up to really close examination. [Big Grin]

Just out of curiosity, how many polys or vertexes do you have in a typical model?

NX-01 is 500,000 polygons.

Depends on the model, a pretty detailed small fighter can weigh in at anywhere between 60,000 and 110,000 polygons with image maps weighing it at around 64 meg. I did a little dalek shuttle once that came in at 120,000 and no image maps, the surface being covered in tons of raised heiroglyphics.

Hey guys

I saw the calendar today for the first time and I immediately thought of all of you! I figured it was about time I came in for a visit and said hi.

You're probably wondering what I think... and, for obvious reasons, I will keep a detailed opinion to myself. Clearly a lot of hard work went into this calendar and just about all the folks who created the imagery are my friends, so kudos to them for keeping the series alive.

I quite like Sean Scott's image of the NX-01 in drydock. The composition and use of wide angle lens is very bold. It's definately my fave.

I agree with many of the comments here that there could be more focus, more of a theme in the images. In the previous calendars, I would decide on a theme and sketch out most of the shots in advance for this very reason.

This time around, the artists were pretty much asked to just come up with something neat on their own. Since there was no single creative filter on the project, each month is pretty much an individual artistic vision.

The difference is apples and oranges, of course!

The heavy slant towards Enterprise is probably because most of the artists in the calendar are working on the show, so those are the models they have handy.

I'm flattered that you guys would like me to do some sort of DS9 wall poster. If I get some free time in the future I'd love to. I'll let you know! Perhaps The Communicator is interested in some art...

As for what I've been up to, until recently I was supervising the CG for the new Trek ride, "Borg Encounter," coming soon to a Las Vegas near you.

During the last few months I have been busy on non-Trek related projects. Well, one of them is sort of Trek related, but you'll just have to wait and see :-)

Hope you're all well, it's nice to see I am still remembered!

If you do a wall poster - that would be absolutely fantastic - I salivate at the idea and would be first in line to buy it. There have NEVER been any good (or just any) DS9 posters. Think of the detail you could have on a poster people!?! Drool!

Oh and Mojo... you mentioned Communicator... I like my posters to be 'non-creased' I'd frame it, but it on a backing board and put it on my wall. With your signature would be a bonus! [Smile]

Speaking of which, Mojo, who was responsible for the Golden Gate Bridge shots in that?

Posted by Mojo (Member # 536) on :

The GG Bridge shots were done by myself and a very talented guy named Bob Quinn.

As far as the poster goes, what I could do is upload a hi-res image to Ofoto.com. If I share it in a guest area, anyone can order any size print they like and have it shipped to them. Excellent quality and as large as 20x30, I think. This has worked well in the past and the prices are reasonable.

In fact, if any of you like, I can upload the magazine covers I did for ST: The Magazine. I created horizontal versions of them for a convention charity auction once. I think I've got the WOK and ST III shots around somewhere...

If you'd like access to my shared folder at Ofoto.com, provide an email address and I will send an invitation.

At that point you can pick images to have posters (or prints) made of. The quality is excellent and the prices very reasonable. They will be suitable for framing if you so choose.

Several of you have requested access to the Ofoto folder.

VERY IMPORTANT: If you order prints, make sure you DESELECT the "zoom & trim" option!

Hello, is this thing on? Remember everyone, you have to send me your EMAIL address! Most of the requests I have gotten to share the Ofoto album have not included this :-)

Jolly good! Then perhaps you can help me with the geography of San Francisco. I've been scratching my head over this one for ages and I can't work out where anything is supposed to be.

Keep in mind, guys, this isn't really my portfolio. It's just a few hi-res images that you can order prints of. People expressed interest so I made these available...

Yes, but many of us are also college-age (or twentysomething) guys seriously in need of posters to decorate our rooms. And quality Trek-related artwork is hard to come by. [Wink]

Thanks for the access, Mojo.

By the way, have you considered having a site where your porfolio can be seen?

Oooh yes please!

BTW - I haven't visited the pictures yet - of course... but this is a great start... what I'd love to see would be a new composition made especially for a poster that is a Deep Space Nine poster. There were NEVER any posters for DS9.

OK - 2 - the generic 'station' pic that is seen on every bit of promo material around including the Companion to DS9. And a really bad poster of the cast in a beige-coloured OPS BEFORE Emissary.

I'd love to see the fantastic things we could only imagine in 1993 in poster form... i.e. some sort of 'unseen frontier' *cough* [Smile] involving an aspect of DS9 or the Defiant or both or Cardassian ships or Dominion ships or Klingon ships or even planet scapes... Bajor? Cardassia Prime? etc etc. something new!! Would be absolutley fantastic.

Who used to deal with the posters back in 1991-1993? Was it Simon and Schuster still?

Andrew

The only difficulty with doing a DS9 poster is it really can't have the station in it - there is no CG model. At least not a good one, anyway...

Defiant and other ships we can do... it's just a matter of when I'll have the time to do an image that I'm not getting paid for :-)

To what are you referring to Andrew? Mojo's pics from his shared folder at Ofoto? Or the pics from the calendar?

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I personally like the WOK image, but the E-nill is a nice one, too. Note that it is supposed to be an oribital shot from "Shore Leave."

That's a nice shot, but the Reliant just seems too damned close to the Enterprise. It robs the composition of depth.

Well, if you watch the movie those ships got REALLY close to one another! That's part of what makes the sequence so dynamic. Of course, I'm just using that as an excuse for wanting to have both ships as big as possible in the shot, they're both nice models :-)

OK, so I've finally bought the calendar.

I thought I'd like it but can I just say... DISSAPPOINTED!!

Mojo, your work/direction was by far superior.

Most pictures look cartoonish in the 2004 calendar.

Bonchune needs to be a little more careful with his registry numbers... I was waiting for a 1701 to crop up on the Lexington - I found it - inside edge of port nacelle. tsk. [Smile]

Wasn't inspired by this calendar AT ALL.

What a shame.

Andrew

I recently purchased the SOTL Calendar and I was completely impressed. I really like the artwork and some of it is done by famous artists like Doug Drexler. I did not know that he did artwork. It was worth every penny and I was really impressed. It does not look like cartoon work, it looks like good quality artwork that I would want to frame and display for all to see. Good job guys. [Big Grin]

Cheers,

Hey Mojo. We met briefly at Convergence 2002 in Minnesoda. I asked you about my portfolio and you told me to send tapes instead of CDs, and it paid off big time.

Im a graphic artist here in Orange County CA. I have access to a HP2800 oversize color printer (hellooooo 36x48..) and would love to print some of your stuff!!

Porn Tapes: they break the ice on interviews.

Comedy is easy!

Tapes as in video tapes, containing, one presumes, samples of 3D animation.

I noticed on the shot of the Enterprise and Lexington, the one nacelle of the Lexington says NCC-1709 and the other says NCC-1701 [Wink]

Well, I finally got a close look at this, since I got the calendar for Christmas. My thoughts:
Overall, I wish they'd offered a little bit more variety in the selection (as they offered in previous years) -- but we've gone over that ground before.

Overall, I think they've done a pretty good job.......

So what thoughts do you have on June, August, and September?

VHS/DVD video of my works in a movie with commentary and such, instead of a CD full of files.

Although now I use an interactive disc with a Flash menu of sorts.

Oh of course - ok thanks. I guess that would mean you'd have to have a video capture card of somesort that had output to vcr? I suppose you could create a DVD - but you'd need a DVD burner.

Yes, I mentioned that [Wink]

And also...

yes the calendar is NICE - but has anyone noticed that cartoony 'finish' or 'filter' that they've included over each picture?? No crisp lines etc. The pic of the Ent, the Vulcans and the Andorians looks essentially like a cap - but has a crayon/comic feeling to the final picture - not like the episode... it makes the pictures/ships/scenes less realistic.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

I honestly think the entire calendar was made to feel as if the images were painted on a canvas, instead of like photographs. Although some of them certainly do have the detail like a photograph.

Posted by Dax (Member # 191) on :

How does one actually go about hanging this calendar on their wall?

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

One doesn't, for it ruins the calender. At least that's my opinion.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :

I'm not a fan of this calendar, for reasons already stated.

I can understand why there's so much NX-01 images, it was the easist to do, however more variety would be better. Afterall, when it's called "Ships of the Line" I expect different ships for each month. Instead with 5 months of Enterprise it might as well be called an Enterprise calendar. I want more ships, the Ambassador, Miranda, or maybe even the Nebula-class for example.

The much requested DS9 image would be nice, maybe with a runabout, Defiant, and workbees. A Wolf 359 battle scene prehaps. Just a couple things I'd like to see. I love seeing the Enterprise-D, it's always been a favorite ship of mine instead of the trend towards tiny ships. That and it reminds me of my childhood watching TNG.

Oo, I'd love some Ambassador shots. That's always been one of my favorites. There is a decent Nebula shots in the 2001 calendar...

The Ent-D is a truly beautiful creation. It's got gorgeous lines, long and graceful curves. It's a crime what they did to her in Generations...

Will Riker and Deanna Troi should be dragged out into the middle of the street and shot in the back of their respective heads.

That scofflaw Worf too, seeing as how it was a security breach that allowed the ship to be attacked in the first place.

Yeah, I've been wondering what happened to Mojo myself -- I haven't received my invite and I enquired quite some time ago. I don't know if there's a limit to the amount of people he can allow in. Of course it may be that he's been busy or on holiday or something.

Maybe he is preparing "Unseen Frontier" for print - and all the rumours about its demise was just that, a rumour!?! [Smile]

Yeah, I wish.
