a redesign of my first fighter, the T-19 Falcon...

Cool- if you made the cockpit more angular, it'd be a great stargate design.

I still think it's not really suitable for a Starfleet design as it looks far too contemporary. It'd be fine for a mid-to-late 21st century plane, maybe even something from WWIII, but not the 24th century.

Oh and if you want parts of it to glow without looking just blurry, try setting the layer with the airbrushing to the "screen" filter. If you want a hot looking bright spot too then duplicate that layer and set the top one to "dodge".

Not Starfleet, pallie- StarGate SG1.
Kinda a practical fighter for the Deadalus class carriers.

You could justify the sleeker design by claiming it uses Asgard tech- imagine the Asgard fabrication tech (as "replicator" means something else in this universe)making up ammo and missiles as needed.
Or maybe having a scaled-down Asgard beam weapon.

Nice but Me remembers something more 24th Century like that you posted before.

Looks like something I'd put mid-late 21st century, but not Star Trek. I also dismiss anything without a couple more views so I can figure out how it's actually supposed to look. Is it thin or fat, wide or narrow, flat or disc shaped? More views help. I guess it's the 3D in me.

I like it. I mean I have to agree with the notion that it isn't a 24th or even 23rd Century design, but it rocks in its own ways.

Certainly it is the answer to the question of what might happen if a Raptor and a Tomcat did the nasty. And sprouted badass wingtip RCS thrusters. [Smile]

Trek-wise, I'm unclear. I mean, after all, the energy-requirement calculations for air- and spaceflight are effectively immutable, and thus (as we've found) the simplest solution from an engineering and energy-requirement standpoint is thrust and the manipulation of airfoils and other aerodynamic surfaces.

However, I don't think a military spacecraft of the Federation would go so far as to have such control surfaces unless they were intended for extended loiter in the air, which is clearly not this vehicle's mission. Thus the ailerons and whatnot only serve to increase the target profile and add mass to a combat vessel clearly meant for the highest performance envelope available.

Unless some other purpose can be divined, that is. As said, I like the vehicle, so I'm willing to help come up with explanatory technobabble as needed to justify it. [Smile]

Well I'm glad you guys at least like the art, despite ... "not 24th century Starfleet".

Thread revive!

So out of boredom I started playing with the pic. Changed the wing some and removed the horizontal stabilizer. Added in some more details. Still trying to get the glowy effects right. Mostly though burn/scorch marks. I always liked the battle worn look of the BSG Vipers.

Sorry, the previous image in the first post got deleted.

As I said before, if you want the glow effect to look right then you need to use either Dodge, Screen or a combination of the two. Like so.

Hmmmm, it's not really 24th Century Starfleet, is it?

Lol.

Looks pretty funky, but being a 3D kinda guy I cant believe it until i see a couple more views from front and top. You 2D guys get away with too much!

It's 2181, not 24th century. And it's not Starfleet either. I removed the UFP references. Except for the partial arrowhead on the pilot's helmets.

I'd love to made a 3D version, but I don't have the software or the knowledge on how to make it if I did.

I didn't mean for you to make it in 3D, I meant for you to draw a front and top view so we can see what it actually looks like. It's cool looking in the side view, but maybe it's too wide or too narrow to tickle my tastebuds when I see it from the front? Maybe in the top view you've got strange cut-outs in the wings, or something cool I've never seen before. Enquiring minds like to know these things!

Looking pretty darned cool, Hobbes. Love the weathering on the tail. Could maybe do with a little more of that on what I assume to be the main wing. The detail on the missiles is awesome. (Can't wait for you to learn 3D and start making decals!) Minor nit, but it seems to me that the pilots necks might be a little too thin.

Regarding the glow effect, I think Rev is referring to the blend/layer effect. Depending on what program you're using, there may be a couple ways to achieve this. If you'd like for it not to obscure the underlying detail and multiply/lighten, etc can be great for doing just that. If I'm not going to take the easy way and use a layer effect, a lot of times what I'll wind up doing is to duplicate the color layer for that object, set it to screen or lighten, apply Gaussian Blur to get it to smoosh out an acceptable distance (this will sometimes take several tries to get it right), and then dial back the opacity 'til I get the effect I want. If I need to shape it, I'll do that with a layer mask or the smudge tool (in Photoshop.)

Looking great, though.

...so what does it transform into? o.O

I like it better without the Starfleet references. I'd see it as a late 21st century design, something in the tradition of atmospheric jet fighters, maybe with a scram jet engine and an additional ion drive?

Anyone else thinking Wing Commander...?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Hmmm..might make for a nice Eugenics War design.
Or something "Terran Empire". [Wink]

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :

Any resemblance to Wing Commander is unintentional.

Anyway it occurred to me that the canopy was a huge target screaming "shoot me here!" So I decided to try to make a canopy shield that would form around the glass during combat. During which the pilots would have to fly by sensors only.

Is the shield supposed to be retractable? Cause if its meant to protect the pilot during combat, and this thing is made for pure combat, then why not just have the shield on all the time?

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :

Yes it's retractable. While this is a combat craft, fighters aren't only just launched during combat. Flight deck operations on a carrier are usually around the clock.
