For instance, mine is

Rm=Romford
3 one of the areas around Romford. RM1 is the main shopping centre at the heart of the town. I live in Harold Hill, a small, er, town, in the big, er, town.
The 7BU would refer to my Close (cul-de-sac) of 14 houses. All you need to actually deliver mail is the house number and post-code.
