Batavia, buh-tay-vee-uh, a city in New York, is the seat of Genesee County. It is situated 33 miles(53km) southwest of Rochester and 36 miles(57km) northeast of Buffalo. Its diversified industries include the manufacture of television sets, transformers heavy and light machinery, machine parts, mobile homes, fiberglass boats, women's shoes, men's shirts, processed foods, candy, and champagne. Among its educational institions is a state school for the blind. There is also a Veterans Administration facility. The Batavia Downs racetrack has harness racing.
Batavia was the center of the Holland Land Purchase, the large Western New York tract acquired in 1793-1797 by Dutch capitalists. The town wa laid out in 1801 and named after the Batavian Republic, as the Netherlands was then called. The Holland Purchase Historical Society now occupies the office built in 1815 by Joseph Ellicot, surveyor and agent for the Holland Land Company. Another interesting old building is the Genesee County Courthouse, build of limestone in 1841 in the Greek Revival style. William Morgan, noted opponent of the Masonic Fraternity, was a resident of Batavia until his mysterious disappearance in 1826.
Batavia was incorporated in 1826 and became a city in 1914. In 1958, city-manager government was instituted. In 1992 and 1993, Batavia was the host of the National Warplane Museum's Wings of Eagles Airshow.
Population: 24,210.

Are you refering to the Attica, host of the (in)famous Attica prison riots? Yup, that's the one...There are several lawsuits still being processed of the apparant torture of many of the prisoners after the riot.

I'll be that girl: and you would be right over. If I were a field, you would be in clover. If I were the sun, you would be in shadow. If I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow."

Well, Batavia's a great place to visit... Attica, on the other hand, there's nothing to do...very boring. The local youth would brag to me how much drugs they use in a week...
