Batavia, buh-tay-vee-uh, a city in New York, is the seat of Genesee County. It is situated 33 miles(53km) southwest of Rochester and 36 miles(57km) northeast of Buffalo. Batavia was the center of the Holland Land Purchase, the large Western New York tract acquired in 1793-1797 by Dutch capitalists. The town wa laid out in 1801 and named after the Batavian Republic, as the Netherlands was then called. The Holland Purchase Historical Society now occupies the office built in 1815 by Joseph Ellicot, surveyor and agent for the Holland Land Company. Another interesting old building is the Genesee County Courthouse, build of limestone in 1841 in the Greek Revival style. William Morgan, noted opponent of the Masonic Fraternity, was a resident of Batavia until his mysterious disappearance in 1826.
Batavia was incorporated in 1826 and became a city in 1914. In 1958, city-manager government was instituted. In 1992 and 1993, Batavia was the host of the National Warplane Museum's Wings of Eagles Airshow.
