Well, have you? I have, I saw Traffic, definately one of the best films I have ever had the good fortune to see. Much better Soderbergh than Erin Brokovich.

American Psycho, Wonder Boys, Virgin Suicides and The Replacements are other recent favorites of mine.

You actually LIKED American Psycho? Wow........ I work in a movie store, and we got more complaints from that movie alone than any other movie before and since. Huh.

I liked What Lies Beneath..... and also, I still love Gone In 60 Seconds, though it's not NEARLY as cool since MY car got stolen.....

I don't rent videos, as I'm sure you recall from a minor rant about them. Recently I've seen Traffic in the cinema, and Unbreakable before that. I'm going to see Hannibal on Wednesday. On Sky Cinema (satellite) recently I've watched In Dreams, The Siege and. . . lots of other things, many of them shite.

Saw Quills the other day. Not bad save that it turned the Marquis de Sade into an advocate for the first amendment rather than a wacked out, um, wacko.

That AND I could have gone sooooooooo much longer without seeing Geoffrey Rush in full frontal nudity!

Scared for life I am.

Snatch was ok. Better than not, but a bit too cute for it's own good.

I much enjoyed American Psycho ... mind you, I was quite scared when Christian Bale goes on about all the crap he puts on his face in the beginning of the movie, but except for Dafoe's wasted character, it was a really great flick. Even the style it was shot in is reminiscent of the boring camera-angles and styles which characterized many '80's flicks. Hell, even Ronald Reagan has a cameo (well, sorta).

Did it seem to anyone besides me that Bateman spent just a tad too much time killing people and returning videotapes?

I appreciated it even more after VH1 aired "Behind The Music: The Huey Lewis And The News Story"

Are you 100% sure that Dogma didn't get more complaints? That flick made fun of the platypus. Well, Catholics too, but mostly the platypuses. Honestly, if my grandma ever saw that movie, she'd blow a gasket (or forty).

As far as recent movies go, I agree that Traffic was really good.

As for movies I've seen recently, but that aren't new, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I now no longer think only of Edward Scissorhands when someone mentions Johnny Depp. :-)

A movie getting complaints isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm sure "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is very scary, and as such, a good 'scary movie'. But the swedish moral guardians, in their ignorance, associated all VCR-titles, and even the machine itself, with "T.C.M" and there was puritanian Crusade. Videos are baaad. You have a VCR at home? You will go to hell! It's not as if you can store OTHER things on a tape.

I liked "American Psycho" but the ending left me wanting. Something more should've happened, no just seeing him calming down and getting tired...

Dogma was great, and they did apologize beforehand, so if people take it personally it's because they're so bored that they have to have something to mutually 'hate'.

I liked 'Meet Joe Black'. My christian halfbrother avoided it because he thought Pitt played the devil, but I filled him in.

As a "real" Chinese (not ABC, nor CBC), I have to say other then two of the fight scences, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The characters makes no connection to each other, further more, the story line does not flow smoothly.

In all, the books are way more better

I feel like I should further explain my previous response:

What I said about ABC or CBC, I meant that maybe for CBC or ABC, the cultural characteristics, the sense of chinese heroism, or the methods of romance in ancient China is unfamiliar to them since they weren't expose to that much of Chinese culture.

What I'm trying to say is, this movie didn't represent the ancient spirit of China(hell, half of the cast can't even speak proper Mandarin). For me, this movie is more like Matrix meet Jackie Chan, because it didn't include things that I explained before in the previous paragraph.

The Long Kiss Goodnight begins, more or less, with Geena Davis being kicked in the head by a deer. This was the high point of the film. Had it been nothing but a continuing sequence of shots wherein Ms. Davis was kicked in the head by deer, elk, and other hoofed mammals I would recommend The Long Kiss Goodnight whole-heartedly. As it was filmed, however, the hoof-to-head quotient of this film is quite low, replaced by far too many scenes in which we are asked to seriously accept the idea of Ms. Davis as a trash-talking assassin. To be fair, this is no less unbelievable than Ms. Davis as a trash-talking (and monkey-wearing) pirate.

Having said all that, of course, your milage may vary.

Um, Electron? As I understand it, something like 80% of China can't speak Mandarin & actually speaks whatever fun little subdialect lives in the area.

Plus the cast isn't very Chinese. Michelle Yeoh is Thai(? Singapori?) & Chow Yun-Fat is as well. (I think)

Exactly, a film about ancient China, and they can't even get a cast that speak decent Mandarin.

It is like getting New Yorkers to play John Wayne cowboy movies! Most people in the States don't have that "cowboy" accent, but man, it would be screwed up to get people without the accent to play the movie.

Same situation apply here, you either do the movie in Cantonese, or in Mandarin, but don't get Cantonese speaking cast to play Mandarin speaking characters!

And it's not only about the language part that I'm pissed off at, the movie totally twisted the view of ancient Chinese heroism, and Chinese romance.

I guess you really have to read the books to understand what I'm talking about.

Yeah, the Bruce Lee-movies were purer. Jet-Li seems to take after Jackie Chan too much, with the climbing on all surfaces and throwing objects. The ladder-fighting of "OUaTiC" was a bit much.
Didn't Bruce Lee do "Fist of Fury"? I need to see that one, and "Game of Death"...

There wrere four trailers on the "OUaTiC"-tape, with five minutes of every movie. They really show too much in their trailers, like, one portion of every big scene in the whole movie...

"The candidate who slimed John McCain in the primaries and smeared Al Gore in the general election is now the president who pledges to elevate the nation's tone and bring civility to our discorse. Kind of like Michael Corleone brought peace to the mob by killing the heads of the other four families."

Chow Yun-Fat is Cantonese (but from Hong Kong, not Caton). I haven't seen Crouching Tiger yet, but several of my friends (only one of whom is Chinese) tell me it's good. As I remember back in Taiwan, if the actors didn't speak "correct" Mandarin, their voices are usually dubbed over by a different actor. I hated that because the voice is usually the idealized type that doesn't always fit the actor, and it sounds VERY dubbed. Actually, along the lines of what Shik was saying, different accents in characters would be more correct because you'd probably hear accents all the time in China.

I thought Fist of Legend was a remake of Lee's Chinese Connection. Either way I find Jet Li to be "purer" than Jackie Chan, who i think only plays for laughs now. That cartoon on WB pretty much proves it.

Yeah, but Lee still is my fav.
Jeff, I think Billy Lo was the character he played in "Game Of death", they must've shot the scenes before he died. How can they have copied his moves and speed to that extent otherwise?
