...I'm officially a U.S. citizen as of today. Waited in the long lines and went through the interview and changed my name (pushed my Chinese name to the middle and added 'Diane' to the front). Have to get sworn in before I can vote, though.

I'm terribly sorry.

Neat!
Though I thought this was going to be a thread about melodramatic Canadian comic strips.

UM: Thank you.

So, why are you a Middle American now? You were an Upper American before, you were not?
And, could you have chosen any name ever? I've always wondered how people with ethnic names choose their Americanized names. I once knew a natural Mohammed Abdi who went by 'Steve'.

Congratulations, Ziyal... umm... I guess Diane, now.

Ziyal, I mean Diane, congratulations. Vote independent.

I personally would have kept the Chinese first name; it adds distinction. My first name is Datshon (dot-sun) which I unofficially shorten to Dat as it helps people pronounce my name much easier. I still keep Datshon though. Still congrats to you Diane.
Funny, my middle name is Joseph and people have on occasion called me that or Joe. I could have been Joseph Datshon, and sometimes I find that to be a little better.

Quiet, you.

UM: Middle? Upper? What are you talking about? And there is no hard and fast rule to choosing an English name. If one's ethnic name sounds close to an English one, one usually picks that. Mine doesn't, so I picked whatever I wanted. To be honest, I'm getting a little tired of Diane after ten years, but then that's how everyone knows me and there isn't really another name I'm that attached to.
Dat: I've always been known as Diane since I came here. My Chinese name is Yinyi, and frankly, it sounds weird if you don't pronounce it the Chinese way, so I'd rather people not pronounce it at all (besides family of course).

Congrats and don't get caught up with the political parties in this country. They do bad things to one's mind.

You make it sound like I just got off the plane.

I believe UM's references to "upper" and "middle" America were supposed to denote Canada and the US, respectively.
And, interestingly enough, I didn't know you weren't already American, or that Diane wasn't really your name...

UM: You thought I was Canadian? That's a new one. I've never stepped foot in Canada.
TSN: Well, Diane really was my name, just not legally.
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
Diane: What I meant was that I'd always assumed you were a full-fledged, jus soli American, and merely of Chinese ancestry. I had no idea you were actually Chinese...

Ultra - you might want to do something about that nose-fetish of yours! ;o)
********* I'm sorry Ziyal/Diane I too thought this thread was going to be about the comic strip - I love that comic strip. I also LOVE Calvin and Hobbes. Lately they've been up to Calvin and his snow-men sculptures - they are SO bloody hilarious. LOL! I wish we had snow here, so I could do that. The Giant snowman running after all the little snow men ;o) LOL!

Keep Diane, it's easier to pronounce, is it? Anyway, I changed my name to Michael because my real name apparently meant little boy in Spanish and a natureal phenomenon led kids in my school believe I can control weather.

"Lately they've been up to Calvin and his snow-men sculptures..."
Erm... You do know that the "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strip was discontinued about... six years ago, IIRC, right?
Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :
Just wait till Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arrives in Australia, Andrew! I bet you'll love them!
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
yesss yessss I know that it has been discontinued... maybe it's just our newspaper that never originally purchased the strip when it first came out and are just getting around to publishing them now, but I suspect that they are just repeating them - they're still great. You HAVE to laugh at the snowmen though.
I heard about this new cartoon coming called "Thundercats" ;o) OK, how far behind are we on For Better or For Worse... what is happening 'over there' atm? Or has that been discontinued too?
Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :
It's still going over here, though I don't follow it at all. Apparently it's somewhat unique in the comic strip world in that the characters (based on Ms. Johnstion's family, IIRC) age.
Yes, at the moment, here - Michael and his Wife are expecting a baby (that's the son.)

I remember when the Dad came home in the snow storm to find the pizza guy helping to deliver the family's youngest kid ...
... I hope he got a good tip out of that. A five-spot just don't cut it.

Glad to have you on the voting end of citizen ship Diane. You can do at least two things now:
1) cancel out Omega's national vote.... 2) serve on the ever popular jury duty!

I've actually gotten out of jury duty twice by telling them I wasn't a citizen. There goes that excuse.

Just tell them you can spot a guilty person just like THAT!
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
Odd... I thought you had to be registered to vote in order to be called to jury duty. How did your name get on the jury duty list, if you weren't even a citizen?
Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :
I've gotten out of jury duty by claiming I didn't know enough English to know didley squat. Ya know, I think my whole family has done that (including my parents who are not registered to vote anywhere.)

TSN, it would be the same reason why I get e-mails about breats enlargement and 50% discounts to OBGYN's.

I'd LOVE to be on jury duty. (I am however in the UK so it's probably quite a bit different.) I am not allowed to for another 20 years as I used to be a prison officer and may run into an ex inmate.

Mind control. That must be it. Both my parents have also gotten those jury duty things, and they freak out every time because they only know it's some kind of summons but not what it really says. Their English isn't THAT bad but they just don't really look at it.
