I have read many of my previous posts, prior to leaving this board for several months, and I have noticed that the way I write and the way I speak is totally different then it was a year and a half ago. When I read some of my posts I realized that I wrote like I was new to Trek.

Maybe it was my girlfriend or even I really did matured now that I am 18.

I even look at things differently now then I did back then. I look now at why people posts such things and generally ignore useless posts. Where back then I now could tell I took offense at any post directly at me negatively or postively.

18 sure is the age of complete maturation, though, I'll tell yah.

"...or even I really did matured now..."

Well, you grammar either hasn't matured, or it's so mature that it's going senile. :-)

Get thee to a sleazy strip bar. Now.

Posted by Vice-Admiral Michael T. Colorge (Member # 144) on :

Don't you mean a stripclub? Anyway, it's natural that people grow up and you might not notice until someone points it out. That or read stuff you wrote from the past and you'll see a difference.

Only Tim could point out someone's grammar and make a mistake himself. [Big Grin]

There are no grammatical mistakes in my sentence. A typo, yes, but complaining about things that are obviously typos is even beyond me.

Were hloding you to that!

Don't you mean "taht"?

Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :

of course, going by my writings, i have grown steadily younger for the past four years.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

Well, I've been here for a few years. The only thing different about my writing style seems to be that the exhuberance of my youth seems to have swung to the side of extreme cynicism. I shudder as I read some of the things I wrote in the early threads of the Officers' Lounge.

I think the only thing that has really changed is my venturing out of the Officers' Lounge and actually joining into debates. In the past year, I've actually been heavily involved in the more hard and heavy Trek forums. Hell, I even got the nerve to post something of my own creative energy into the Designs and Creativity forum. I participate in the forum contests, and sometimes (albeit rarely) post something in the General Sci-Fi and Star Wars forums. I tend to stay out of the Flameboard, though.

So, other than really where I post, nothing else seems to be much different about my posting style. I just get yelled at a lot more often.

You know some people gage how smart someone is how they handle their own language. For instance you won't think somone is smart if they talk like if they are half retarted and half drunk but they are not.

However to make a simple mistake as trying to explain that being just 18 explains that I have matured is another.

One simple note: I have noticed that older people point out mistakes and not younger ones. I was on a DBZ board (yes I am a fan of that Anime) and those fans make Trekkies (Trekkers) look like normal people. Through their constant screaming of "Filler Is Evil" and "Freiza is Gay" they will never point out your mistakes. They are between the ages of 13 to 22 years old. I guess its because they know they make mistakes as well. Makes you think what is inside the heads of people who like to point out mistakes, huh?

Well, then, all you need do is find yourself a Trek board where they don't mind your spelling/grammar/punctuation, and fuck off there sharpish. Try TrekBBS. 8)

Kidding. Speaking as an oldie, I think that we've always been used to having a certain level of proficiency with the English language demonstrated round here. Therefore when we see people who don't write English very well, we usually make a joke of it (because many of the mistakes are often quite funny). Most of the time the perpetrator soon learns we're not being (too) cruel, and often improves over time. Others get in a huff and leave; good riddance.

Posted by Malnurtured Snayer (Member # 411) on :

I would point out that we're usually harsh at those "mistakes" because we have many members who learned English as a second language and are more proficient then those for whom its their first (and most times, only).

I don't think using a DBZ board as a comparison is fair. Those places are full of mad, crazy scary people who like to eat live pigs. The only way to escape is to agree that even a word change to a dub instantly renders it worse than Satan's shit while slowly walking backwards. Saying "Kamehameha" in a girls voice also helps.

"Anyway, it's natural that people grow up"

Thank god we've got you around to fill us in on these fascinating biological facts Mickey. Without you I'm sure this place would be full of young men running around screaming "Why do I have hair in new places! And why do I want to rub myself against the TV when bumpy-chest creature appears on it?"

I've also realised what Simon was like in the old days. Throwing Smile's around with gay abandon, saying stuff like "But ignore me, I'm a silly monkey, LOL!!!". Yes, LOL. For shame Simon.

Er... Ah... I mean, um... *cough* Um... Yeah.

Ah... when I left for a while the big thing was DARKSTAR going crazy because some people made fun of him because of his grammer.

Oh and yes you are correct DBZ forums are full of insane people. However I happened to be in a respected one (Planetnamek.com) before it closed. They are smart people who happened to be obessed with DB/Z/GT .

Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :

I wasn't here for that Darkstar boy, but I went ahead and searched out his posts and then visited his page. He seems to lack even the ability to string together a basic sentence.. I mean, we make typos and misspellings all the time, but our basic literacy and grammar is still there.. I think that he just lacks the basic ability to look at what he's typing and see if it makes sense to anyone but him. It's just aggravating to try and have a conversation with someone and not understand what the hell they are saying.

"when I left for a while the big thing was DARKSTAR going crazy because some people made fun of him because of his grammer [sic]"

No, DARKSTAR wasn't made fun because of his grammar. He was made fun of because he was an enormous TitMonkey who made no sense and got offended when we called him on his "The Danube Class can go Warp 9.4 in a Maelstorm of Chocolate Nougat". TitMonkey.

"...DB/Z/GT..."

"Dragonball Z"/"Gran Turismo"? That would be an odd combination...

Perhaps, Cheeky monkey, or silly Rabbit!

GT = Grand Tour, I believe. Which is actually far less exciting sounding than Gran Turismo.

Matrix: What on earth has happened to Planet Namek anyway? Between that and Dianch...Dian...that big headed twat with the nice page dissapearing I can't get my daily dose of "The dub sux!"

Posted by Matrix (Member # 376) on :

Well, if you were on PlanetNamek.com you could always said hi to me since I am Matrix there as well. Anyway, PlanetNamek.com closed down after Feb. 20, because of several things:

1. Cost, it was getting expensive
2. Too many people, getting 8-12,000 hits a day which also increases costs
3. The two owners not interested in DB/Z/Gt anymore
4. The forums went down hill after August.
5. And most importantly costs.

There are three versions of Dragonball, the original Dragonball, Dragonball Z which its called in the anime version. Originally Dragonball and Dragonball Z were one, but when the manga was animized as it was being written it was decided for some reason that DB would be split into two. And the last and the very least Dragonball GT (Grand Tour) which basically is like the continuation of Dragonball Z so they can suck the money out of little Japanese (and soon American) ki's pockets. GT was produced not by the maker but by the company who produced it and so without little help from the almighty creator, GT sucked. (Sounds abit familiar here doesn't it?)

Oh and by the way, I wasthe only one over there for being the one who supported Dubbed and Filler.

You can always ask me a question about DB/Z/GT. Apparently I now know more about DB then Trek.

Edit: I thought Darkstar was being made fun of becasue he said this would be his final post and 2 dasy later he's posting again?

Darkstar had... issues. I'm quite certain that in person he's probably a fairly decent and upstanding fellow. He obviously had some emotional problems, judging by his comments on his page and here about his unhappy personal life and the death of his father.

As a community we were fairly rough on him. He was atarget because he capitalized everything, used no punctuation, and it took a team of lawyers, accountants, and linguists to decipher some of the stuff he wrote. Whether the treatment he got was worse than what other new members have gotten is point for a debate at another time. Personally, I think we did take a few things too far.

He wasn't epitome of model behavior, either. He posted that he was leaving in all of the forums, called us all a bunch of "gays and lesbians," and left. Then he came back for a short while before leaving us again with the parting message that we should all perform actions to ourselves that, if we were all hermaphroditic, would surely result in pregnancy.

And that is pretty much the Readers Digest version of the Darkstar saga.

A little dose of humor never hurt anyone or any speech I've heard. That includes eulogies at funerals. If I were to ever be president (highly unlikely, I know), my State of the Union addresses would rock. [Big Grin]

"highly unlikely, I know"

Yeah. Just unlikely.

What about the "Go to H*** Flare! F*** you all you f**s!!" or somethign like that when he came bak for the 43rd time?

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

That was included in my assessment of the Darkstar Saga. I just cleaned it up. And it wasn't really 43 times of leaving and coming back. It was closer to about 4 or 5 times.

We're missing the central issue here: Darkstar was from Swindon. 8)

One night i popped some popcorn and read the entire Darkstar saga (thank you, search function!)

originally you guys were pretty rough on him, and i disagreed, but then he just turned worse and became an intentional irritant i believe. But UM making fun of him in his sig was kinda low

heres one of my favorites:

Those were three in a row.. no one even said boo to him.. then, returning after that (i believe that was his fourth 'last post ever') he broke his self imposed exile with this little gem:

Still, you gotta wonder if he's not still lurking...poised to strike at exactly the right moment. Now what that moment might be..I dunno...
