Today I am officially an Electronics Warfare operator. I took my final exam today which involved a shipboard simulation operating the SLQ-32 in the Persian Gulf under hostile situations. The scenario included several US and British ships along with hostile Russian and Iraqi forces.

Anyway I got an 86% on the exam. Yay me!

Russians??

Do you know something we don't?

Nice one. Provided that errant 14% didn't involve sinking any Royal Navy ships. 8)

Of course not Lee ... [Big Grin] Besides, when the missiles were inbound I didn't have time to ID which allied ship they were heading to. Prehaps if I could more easily and quickly indentify it as the HMS Invincible I would have just happened to forget to jam them. [Wink]

And yes First of Two, my security clearance ensures I'll always know something you don't. [Wink]

Congrats on passing Hobbes, hope you never have to use it for real.

Thanks, but what would be the point of learning missile matrixes for just about every country if I did not intend to use the knowledge.

I also got my overall class average for the 14 week school, 90%. Second in my class, but since it's also broken between male and female I'm also the top rated male in my class.

I don't know if I already mentioned it, but I'm going to San Diego, California onboard the USS Fitzgerald DDG-62. It's an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (guided-missile).

Congrats!

What class phaser banks does that ship have!?! ;o)

Well done!

Congrats, and welsome to the land of knowing things you can't tell people....

"What class phaser banks does that ship have!?!"

Well if I'm not mistaken, it should have the Phalanx Gatling gun sys, and some small cannon fore and aft. Although it's all about the missiles nowadays...*sigh*

actually theyre changing continuity of what they should have at this point in history and they have laser pistols, with phase cannon being developed

I don't know what most of that armament stuff stands for, but it's a nice looking ship.

The pic didn't load.

A little background info on my ship...
quote:
USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62) is the twelfth ship of the Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers. It was commissioned in Newport on 14 October, 1995.

Lieutenant William "Bill" Fitzgerald, a native of Montpelier, VT, enlisted in the Navy in 1956. He was selected for officer training in 1959, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1963.

LT Fitzgerald's first ship was the USS Charles H. Roan (DD 853), which was homeported in Newport. At the end of his tour aboard the ROAN, he was selected to be a Naval Advisor to the South Vietnamese Navy, Coastal Defense Group 16. He served 70 miles southeast of Danang, on the Song Ve River near village of Pho An.

On 7 Aug 67, they were overrun by Viet Cong forces. LT Fitzgerald ordered his men to evacuate and escape in their small patrol boats. LT Fitzgerald then stayed behind to provide covering fire and coordinate artillery and air strikes. All his men survived, but LT Fitzgerald was killed. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.

The ship's motto is "Protect Your People."

Is it OK for us to know all this?

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

If they kill you tomorrow, the answer is no

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

The Winston S. Churchill? Oh, of course, to differentiate it from the Winston Ray Churchill, named after the much-more-famous Congressman from North Dakota. I mean, really. . .

I've never seen a bulbous bow like that. That's about the coolest ship one could be assigned to nowadays in the US navy, but I guess those ships, with their strategic importance and so, has a lot of brass on them. Strict rules, lots of yelling and anal officers, I'll gather.
Or is it a small command?

I'm not a Gunner's Mate so I'm not sure either. I do know what the CIWS is though. Close-In Weapons System. Fires 20mm rounds at inbound missiles. VLS stands for Vertical Launching System I think. The DDG launches missiles vertically just behind the 5in gun.

Mohuh?

Of course, I should have recognized the Phalanx system.

I'm curious what those Bushmaster things are... [Confused]

Posted by EdipisReks (Member # 510) on :

25mm Bushmaster cannons, maybe?

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

I meant what would they be used for. The "low-angle" thing seems weird.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Hobbes, lets just all hope you don't have to use any of your weapons. *join hands everybody*...

"We stand day and night, by the old cooling tower; They have the plant but we have the power" ;o)

"Where's my burrito! Where's my burrito!" ;o)

The 25mm Bushmaster is the main weapon on the M-2/M-3 Series Fighting Vehicle, and it's low-angle aspect is proably is to shoot at thing on and in the water, small terrorist boats coming along side and the such...

Posted by Nimpim (Member # 205) on :

Yes, all american warships will receive the 2002 upgrade for their short distance arms deployment, from enemy boats to terrorist boats. Talk about purpose-built!

That would depend on how high your clearance goes. [Wink]

It's likely I'll always know something you don't, either... but the proper pronunciation of a species of icthyosaur that died out 43 million years ago probably isn't all that relevant. [Smile]

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

How relevant is the correct spelling of "ichthyosaur", though?

Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :

Isn't it comforting to know we are all unique, just like everyone else....

When it comes to radar parameters and missile matrixes of every countries military, then yes I will know more than you most likely. For example all about the UK's Sea Eagle missile or Russia's Shipwreck missile such as designation codes, ranges, and elints.

Provided you don't have one of those laptops from MoD those Navy types are always losing.
