Right now I have l4ess than 3 minutes to right this in Ricky Heaven. I have duty today, but as Ship Staff I can skip the morning duty, just have to return at 1800 tonight. I graduated on the 8th, and now on leave. I'll talk a little about 'the' experience the next chance I get.

Well, I missed the train to go see 'Baby Faces' in Chicago. So I'm stuck in Ricky Heaven for a while. Rixk Heaven is a Boot Camp term for a place to watch movies, play games, go on the internet, listen to music, and so forth. Not a bad place to hang out, just wanted to see sme skin that's all...
The newest CO of RTC, Captain O. W. Wright made Boot Camp easier. Orginally we would get only 6.5 hours of sleep. Now we get 8 hours. That's onew of many things. However starting with Division 020 they are starting to extend the time in Boot Camp to 13 weeks instead of 9 weeks. I lucked out.
I guess I will figure something out.
Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :
8 hours of sleep.... man, I still don't get that now...
Posted by Matrix (Member # 376) on :
I don't even get 8 hours of sleep. I'm on Ship Staff, unlike Compartment watches, I get a watch every day and most of the time at night. I get more like 5 hours on average.
I leave on the 15th for A school. Basically this is a bullshit week since we completed our training. So when I go down to Florida, I should be rested up... alittle.

You had fun? Most people say that right after getting out. It's not that boot camp is hard, but it sucks.
What division were you in? I was in Division 192, while at Corry Station Pensacola new students from Great Lakes were from divisions in the 300's. According to your post they've cycled back down to 001.
Considering I've gone through boot camp recently, back in March-June this year I know exactly what you went through. As well as the new words in your vocabulary you use that people back home would not have a clue meant.
Being in the Navy is interesting in one regard, it's like being in a big club of sorts. Anyway, welcome to it.

Today is my last day of Liberty. I am in Division 458, Ship 09, USS Parche. So you know all the 'Ricky' words?
There's a few more I forgot.
Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :
The Parche? She's gotta be a training sub, right? I was under the impression that all the Sturgeons had been removed from active service.

They had to leave them in, it's not that the new Sea Bass class isn't technologically superior, but a man has to have standards.

Sea Bass-class?
are they... ill-tempered?
Posted by Nimpim (Member # 205) on :
Short, fat and brown. Even the designers don't want to be connected with it, it appears the concept originated from Project Bootstrap. And the reactor immediately gives crewmembers ballcancer.

They're not actual ships. They're barracks named after ships. I was in Ship 1, USS The Sullivans.
Also I refused to use 'ricky' terms ... I hated them, no one in my division used them much either.
Posted by Matrix (Member # 376) on :
I am at Ricky Heaven on my last day at Boot Camp. About 50 shipmates left today, but about 30 of us stayed behind to catch our flight to Florida tomorrow. Sad to them go, some were cool, the others were just... for the lack of a better term, assholes.
I never used the ricky names, but the only ones we really used was Ricky Ninja and Ricky Boxing.
Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :
and all we had in the army were starships.....

What about Ricky "you got some 'splaining to do" Ricardo?

I see... well if you were into the fine art of ricky boxing then, well hope you enjoyed yourself.
Again I ask, what school are you going to in Florida? If you are even going to an A-school that is. If so, is it NAS for airman or Corry Station for us more elite CT's and EW's.
I myself am currently in San Diego waiting for my ship to come in.
As for sleep...let's see for my division we had from 2100-0400. We were in the last group to have those hours, I think the later 190's divisions or early 200's got the improved 2100-0500. When my division left they changed it again to 2200-0600.
Are they still wearing tennis shoes instead of the steel-toe boots? Another change that happened after my division left.

Reminds me of a song and a saying.....

I can tell you that A school is a far improvement over Boot Camp. It's almost like College in many ways. Though alot of people so far has that I stink...
I never started to Ricky Box until I think it was 4-2 day. Yes we use tennis shoes when it's not that bad out. When it's wet we use the steel toed shoes.
Taps and Reveille is 2200 to 0600.

Perhaps you should shower.
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
You still haven't said which A school unless I missed it. I'm just curious if you're an airman at NAS or CT/EW at Corry.
I never 'boxed' in boot camp, I think they put something in the water because I could never um.. get it up. Then again surrounded by guys that's probably a good thing.
Regardless of which A-school you're at, it's indeed like college. I wish I was back at Corry, I had a blast.

Naval boxing invloves penile erections in an all-male environment. This is useful information. It means that everyone was right. The fact that the Village People sang about the navy was appropriate.

Naval Boxing sounds a bit gay.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
LOL!
Hang on now there are TWO of you in the US NAVY!?!
Is this a Star Trek influence? You just want to go in the Navy? It's a family tradition? It's a good job opportunity? Or you like the uniforms?
Are there any women in your navy yet?
And WTF is "Ricky"?
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
Well, they seem to be suggesting that "Ricky" means "homosexual"...
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
"Ricky" is a slang term for Recuit in boot camp. As for where they got "Ricky Boxing" I don't know.
Yes there are women in the Navy. There are women on my ship. I was in an intergrated division in bootcamp which was 40 males and 40 females.
As for me, it is a family tradition to be in the Navy. My dad was a Cryptologic Technician [Maintenance] (CTM) My mom was a Cryptologic Technician [Technicial] (CTT). Cryptologic refers to communications, CT's listen for encrypted comms and try to deciper it so we know what they're doing as well as pass on encrypted information such as fleet movements so they don't know what we're doing.
I, on the other hand, am an Electronics Warfare Techician (EW) which is merging with CTT's. Apparently our jobs are basically the same thing and the Navy is trying to simplify things.
But primarily, having the Navy on a job resume looks good. Plus having a top secret security clearance is worth a lot. If a company works with the government it costs them a lot do get a security clearance for someone, but since I already have one, they don't have to spend any money and would take me over the guy who doesn't have one.
As for it being a Star Trek thing or liking the uniforms ... that had nothing to do with it.
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
You never did explain why you were (nearly) engaged in all-male activities that require penile erections...
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
Thanks for the info. Do you carry nukes on your ship!?! *scary* Then would it be like that movie... um you know with Denzel Washington/Gene Hackman/Viggo Mortensen? Except your not in a sub... like if the 'order' was cut off - or what was supposedly the 'order'.
Actually that movie - isn't that a little silly - wouldn't they have some sort of 'build' up that they would be aware of to the descision to use a Nuke? I mean the Cuban Missle Crisis was a 'build up' of tensions - most things are. I'd doubt that a sub would be floating along oneday and get a message to fire a nuke. Or are they ordered to do it right away (It's not like this is the coldwar anymore) wouldn't they want to confirm such an order?
OK 'nother question - have you ever seen a UFO/alien? OK OK - you are probably not in the postition yet. Do they make you say not to speak about any 'alien' stuff?
Andrew

Dude, in the movie you are referring to, Russian terrorists (Nationalists or Communist hard-liners, I forget) had siezed a Russian nuclear missile base and were threatening to launch the site's missiles at the US.
I think that qualifies as a tension-inducing build-up.

I am a AME (Aviation Structural Mechanic, Saftey Equipment. My A school is in Pensacola, Floria. It's a 2 month course in whcih I will get a total of 23 college credits.
No one in my family is or was in the Navy. I didn't join because of Star Trek. In fact it was my interest in the Navy that attracted me to Star Trek.
Yes there are females. I was never in an integrated division. After looking at these females, you get what they call Ricky Vision. Which means you'll end up going to an acne face, fat, ugly girl thinking she's hot. I haven't yet. But I am strangely attracted to the Air Force chicks.

Andrew,
In the movie, after partially recieving a message that seems to order the ship to fire her nukes, the sub (USS Alabama) comes under attack from a rogue Russian sub, and the communications bouy is damaged, resulting in: a) they don't get the entire transmission, and b) they can't confirm the transmission to begin with. The tension is between the CO (Hackan) and the XO (Washington).
The CO wants to treat the last order as valid and fire his missiles, even though if the situation has calmed down, this act would provoke a nuclear war.
The XO does not want to fire if they cannot confirm the order. His arguement is that there are other US missile subs capable of carrying out the order in the event that the Alabama does not.

OK, forgot about that - I just thought it was set during the Cold War.
