I am in England finally! I got here last night after 11 hours of flight and 5 hours of waiting and commuting and dragging my luggage up the stairs. It actually wasn't that bad except I threw up on the plane and people gave me wrong directions (good thing I asked around some more). The campus is at least twice the size of my US school and very foresty with lots of grass and trees. It's right outside Brighton and surrounded by low hills. My flat is on one of these hills, hence the dragging of luggage. It's a bit of a climb, but at least there's a nice view. The temperature isn't as cold as I thought, and we even had sun today.

I have to go do some shopping now, so more updates later.

She's there ten minutes and already shopping -- women! Gotta love 'em [Smile]

Hope you enjoy it there, Tora! Best o' luck!

Surely this is common practise. If a foreignly accented person comes up to you asking for directions, it's law to send them to the wrong place. It's how they learn not to be different.

Hey! I resent that! I give good directions to anyone who asks - not my fault I can't remember road names . . . [Big Grin]

Threw up? Figures. Airplane food is rather disgusting if you ask me.

And how did you end up in Britain anyways?

By travelling via plane, as she cryptically hints at.

The real question is when does she plan on making the candlelit pilgrimage to the maternity ward of the Brighton Hospital. They'll put a church there, someday. You wait.

Posted by Tora Ziyal (Member # 53) on :

Tom: Say what?

Tahna: I'm doing study abroad for the next six months.

Snay: I went GROCERY shopping, not clothes-type shopping, and only in the little store on campus at that. But I am going with a group into town today to check out the stores and get plates and toiletries. We went to some pubs last night and walked through alleys with very charming stores and restaurants. Mmmm....

Omigod, the weather! It was all green yesterday after I got here. Around 7 am this morning it was snowing when I looked out the window, and everything was WHITE. Then around 11 am the snow all melted and the sun came out and it was all green again. Jesus. It's really gorgeous.

And yet, so grey.

Give it six weeks and I'm sure you'll want to be a lumberjack too.

That's Canada, surely?

Posted by akb1979 (Member # 557) on :

Nope, Britain. Here we enjoy dull mornings, dull afternoons and dark evenings (the latter is pretty definate for anywhere except the poles). We also enjoy rain, rain, rain, rain with wind, flooding, and yet more rain. In other words, you are very luck to have had snow - in a few days you'll have all the shit weather the rest of the UK enjoys! Doesn't that make you feel all warm and special?

Lumperjack....

What is a Lumper.... and do I really want to know...

Is a lumperjack one that travels with knowheads, ensuring the proper knottiness of the individual??

I remember it being chily and rainy when I had my 4-Day Pass there.... A few of the pubs, only barely, and never ask for a beer in german, they tend to look at you and ask "What??", which I can't say I blame them....

Now, to one day visit and be sober.... That may be an interesting experience too....

Ha-ha!

Not that it was a terribly impressive snowfall; but at least the weather is trying to be seasonal... even if it is a bit late.

Considering that it's snowed in Christmas Day precisely never in my memory, I can't say I'm surprised.

If we do get anything, it's usually in February.

So, Diane, are you on university computers? Can you get ICQ, or ICQ-lite? Or is it e-mail and super trendy message board only?

Brighton does need more random acts of destruction. And if there's one thing that can supply that, it's an American with a temper.

It snows a little in the morning but clears by the time I get up. There was rain in London the day I got here, but nearly none since then. We've had sun EVERY day, though it gets cloudy in the evening. Sure, it's friggin cold in the afternoon, but not too bad on the whole.

I went on a bus tour yesterday and saw the collapsed west pier. Did it really only collapse last week? It looked like it's been like that for years. Kind of hauntingly beautiful though. We also toured the Royal Pavilion yesterday. It was REALLY cool. Part of it is that they always talk about it in romance novels, but it's fascinating on its own. My favorite parts were the dragon chandelier and the mosaic portrait of George IV.

Liam: No, I don't get ICQ since we're not allowed to download it on the school computers. It'll have to be email. I got my class schedule today, and I only have classes on Thursdays and Fridays. Woohoo! Email me (Lee and MaGiC too) and let me know when we all have time to meet in London.

Yes. They also don't let you swallow rat poison, which is only mildly more painful that using AOL.

For that matter, how would you use it? Uni computers are already connected to the internet, after all. So using an ISP would be rather...pointless?

Plus, with a laptop, she'd need to get a house with a landline, pay for an internet connection, blah blah...

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Need Ziyal's email address. Of course, most of the world now has my mobile phone number and that's what I mostly use to conduct my social life. Except tomorrow, when my wife (who left hers at work) has to go to Manchester so is taking my mobile with her. I feel naked already.

*looks down*

Well, that explains that, then - I forgot I'd already gone to bed before I got up to use the computer. 8)

Ahh. So, this ethernet cable, does it follow you around? Or are your halls of residence connected up to the university LAN? Because that's not really common practise here. Often because Halls of Residence are a couple of miles away from the main university site. And because Britain as a whole is only just now getting on the broadband wagon.

Greetings from Brighton indeed.
I was at the west pier when the east one collapsed. We couldn't see it, though, the storm and the waves kind of blurred everything.
No, I was occupied enough with being worried about the one we were on.

There is no secondary floor plane under the boards, I could see the waves crashing under my feet, if we'd gone in there's no way we would've survived, 5 minute swim from the beach in ice-cold water, with winter-clothing. We would've been smashed against the poles below in a heartbeat.

When we got back to our friends house they immediately briefed us about the event. Not so fun to hear about... :.

So who is Prince William dating?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

No, Nimmy, get your compass points correct. You were at the East pier when the West one collapsed. The West Pier has been collapsing for years, every few winters a bit more falls off. Yet they continue to insist that they're going to refurbish it and start using it again.

Wraith: Not a good idea. This is a small island, I can find you easily. 8)

So are there two piers? The one that they showed collapsed - is that NEAR the one you were on - I thought they said it had been closed for years.

It looks like a grand old structure. It was built in the 1800's?

Will you people hurry up and email me your schedules? I do still have school, you know, and the workload's not getting any lighter. How about next weekend?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Sorry, Di. I'll try to email you as soon as I remember to, but if it's my schedule you want then that's simple.

I'm free all next week, then the week after I start a new contract which will keep me busy for about 2 or 3 months. Next weekend is. . . problemmatic. We're a bit skint at the moment and aren't going to have a lot of cash until the Monday after when Kate gets paid. Then I get paid and we're in gravy. Be even nicer if we could sell the house because then we'd be in special 100,000 gravy. The weekend after (last one in January) is OK, as is the first weekend in February; the weekend after that is Kate's birthday and we may be doing something, we were going skiing but now I have this job which is for a regular customer and they asked for me specifically so I can't take the week off I'd need. But we might go away for the weekend.

There. That's my schedule. This is why I don't keep an appointments diary. 8)

Free Advice: Even if the weather suddenly and inexplicably zooms up to levels like those from the muggy depths of August, the sun is splitting the stones and you feel the uncontrollable urge to expose skin, do not, under any circumstances whatsoever, wear shorts. Speaking from experience, English Flare-going gentlemen have issues with this. I blame that Victoria bitch.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Yes, she saw a North American wearing shorts and said "we are not amused."

Certainly you shouldn't if you go to one of those public houses. Wearing shorts screams "tourist". Or "old man".

I'm here until Wednesday, then I go back to Liverpool for an exam, and remain there for the term. I usually come back for at least one weekend, so whenever you want is fine. I just need a bit of warning.

See, there's the problem. You should never be a tourist. Ever. It only encourages people to charge more and beat you up.

Unless, obviously, you go to middle-class American area and speak with a British accent. Then all the lady muff that you desire will be yours. I'm told.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

This explains why Liam was so looking forward to his visit to the States a couple of years back, and why he was so disconsolate on his return.

Im hindsigh, I think I should have gone with the other version of the Victoria joke: She says "We are not amused," then sees an American wearing shorts and says "Now that's funny!" 8)

Posted by Tora Ziyal (Member # 53) on :

Don't worry, I didn't bring my shorts.

Lee: Er...I have an essay due the beginning of February, so I don't think I can go around that time. A bunch of American students I know are going up to London this weekend, so I might just go with them and stay until Tuesday or Wednesday. How's that?

We could perhaps meet one of those evenings, depends how I'm feeling about having to commute to Redhill from East London every morning.

Posted by Tora Ziyal (Member # 53) on :

Er, what does driving from Redhill to east London have to do with this?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Simple. I'm going to have to leave at 0730 every morning in order to get from Forest Gate to Redhill, via bus to Stratford, Jubilee Line to London Bridge, then use powers of telepathy to find out WHERE THE FUCK THE TRAIN IS GOING FROM THIS MORNING, PLATFORM-WISE, BECAUSE THEY WON'T BLOODY TELL YOU ON THE DEPARTURES BOARD, OH NO, THAT WOULD BE ACTUALLY HELPFUL before finally getting to Redhill. I then have to reverse this journey in the evening. And then think about whether I can even face going out.

That's a damn good question. ANSWER HER!

Lee, Ziyal, Liam...Meeting up. Here is my schedule...again I don't need a diary. Ok I am free every Saturday until 8th Feb and even then am available on the evening of the 8th. I have rehearsal pretty much all day Sunday though I can usually get away by 7pm. Weekday nights are fine with the exception of Wednesdays (rehearsals) and Thursday 23rd Jan (rehearsal) I am in a play the last week of Feb and have a hen weekend and a holiday in March (So only available last W/E Mar)

Hope that helps. Give me a time and a pub/restaurant location and I'll be there. If we want cheap and cheerful place to eat I would suggest Cafe Emm in Soho. Solid robust menu with several veggie options. Inexpensive house red.

Posted by Tora Ziyal (Member # 53) on :

Well, the hostel I stayed at was a bit dodgey, and I was with too many people with too many opinions. But in general London was too crowded and touristy and EXPENSIVE. The Globe Theater was great, the British Museum was okay. There were a few things I didn't get to do because of the others, but I should've just gone off on my own, so that was my mistake. The money thing really turned me off, though, and the city wasn't impressive enough to justify the prices.

I found it pleasent, although it was 3:00 am GMT, so it was a bit dark.... and my eyes a bit blurred... and my mind a bit reeling from alcohol in-take....

What a pathetic fool I was.....

And, no, I am not pathetic now...

To be fair, you can't really see London in a day. And to be double plus fair, the best areas aren't the touristy bits anyway.

But yes, it is amazingly expensive. Apart from the tube. But that's hardly a "sight".

Feb. 15 is actually pretty good for me right now and March is not, so let's keep it the 15th. We don't have to do anything expensive.

So, time and meeting place?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Hmm. . . Leicester Square?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

It is impossible to do anything in London that ISN'T expensive.

Never the less, I shall be shouting loudly at my bank on Monday, and if they get tired of me and give up, I shall be there.

Posted by Tora Ziyal (Member # 53) on :

Well, if it's that big of a problem, I'm sure we can postpone it.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I don't want to be a killjoy.

I'll let you know tomorrow. If they say no, I'll have to wait until March.

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

Did anything get decided here? R we on for evening of 15th?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

"R"?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

It's crazy text talk!

Unless things change drastically and the university guild suddenly turns into a model of efficiency, I won't be able to make it then. March would be better. Plus the hair dye might have gone by then...

Curiosity == piqued.

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

Okay, well, I can possibly do March 8 if I don't visit my friend in Oxford. I haven't heard back from her yet. Otherwise it'll have to be the 14th or 15th.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

*pops Tim*

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

Can do ANY w/e In March except 1st so just give me a date and I'll haul my booty into town.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Pirate booty?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Yarr!

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Me hearties.

And relax.

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

I meant my firm well toned rear...and yes I'm sure pirates would approve...

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

Omigod! Ragtime's going to be in London in March!! I'll have to fit that into the same weekend.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Yes!

Who?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Isn't that a bit like saying "jazz is going to be in London" or "rock and roll is going to be in London"?

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

If there are Broadway musicals by those names, then yes.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Shh! Someone'll hear you! Next thing we know, there'll be "Jazz: The Musical." Only it won't have any jazz in it, it'll just be all the usual same shite storylines and music that all West End fucking musicals have.

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

Ragtime is based on a book of the same name by E.L. Doctorow. It's less about the music than the time period, the American Dream (and its failure), women's freedom, racism, and how people of different social groups affect each other's lives. Don't knock it til you've seen (or heard) it.

By the way, I can definitely do the weekend of March 8. That okay with everybody?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

I'm pencilling it in, with one proviso: we're very close to signing the contract on the house, and we may have to rush off to Bristol any weekend now (which could mean that one) 'cause that's where our lawyer is. But that shouldn't stop the rest of you, just go ahead and if we're there we're there, and if we're not it's for a good reason - namely we're considawably - considawably - wicher than yow! 8)

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

"Jazz: The Musical" would star Scatman Crothers, and be the tale of a lone Porche trying to survive a war against people who aren't "jive". The songs would be funky in the extreme.

I can do the 8 March. Probably. Maybe. 80% sure.

"'Jazz: The Musical' would star Scatman Crothers..."

If, y'know, sixteen-year-dead corpses could act, and stuff.

Pity-inducing aside: The_Who's The_Tommy tech week is presently killing me.

Previous three days and three nights = 42 minutes of natural light exposure and 14.5 hours of sleep. Three more before opening night. I will be shell of myself by then.

Damn you Pete Townsend. Damn you to child-molesting hell.

Posted by Ultra Magnus (Member # 239) on :

At least you've found a sufficient amount of flamboyantly gay people to fill out the main cast. That's got to count for something.

Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :

We played "Rock and Roll Part II" in the Warmup today, which I think works out to quasi-irony. British paedophile music = teh r0xx0r.

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

Okay, so far: Liam = possibly, Lee = maybe, Clare = ?. Any updates? Are we up for March 8 or what?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Looks like we might be able to avoid any last-minute dashed to Bristol, and even if we do have to go it's unlikely to be next weekend, so at the moment we're definitely available.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I've moved up slightly from "maybe" to "quite possibly".

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Gosh.

Stay tuned for 'round-the-clock updates on the Liam Situation...

Hang on...the 8 March is THIS WEEKEND!

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Yes, and we'd like to know whether you're getting your skinny white ass down here or not.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Providing I can get someone to jumpstart my car...yes. Yes indeedy. Woo!

What time and where, fat boy?

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

To the best of my knowledge I am still available this W/E. Just let me know when and where Lee. Is Kate coming along too?

Great. I finally give up on you all and start making alternative plans for the weekend, and then you all reply.

As for time and place, I have no idea. Say about 6pm? As for where, I dunno. . . Clare, any ideas? And yes, Kate is coming too.

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

Cool I finally get to meet her properly! I think Cafe Emm for dinner, but as for an actual meeting spot...I'm not sure. Needs to be a landmark as Dianne is probably not very familiar with central London! Outside the Empire in Leicester Square maybe?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Cafe Emm would be perfect, everyone I've ever taken there has loved it, just as I loved it when you first took me there! Leics. Square is best, and the Empire is as good a landmark as any. Let's go for that, then.

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

Okay, 6:00 pm, outside the Empire in Leicester Square. Will you guys pm me your mobile numbers just in case?

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

How exciting! First ever PM sent!

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Actually, you've PM'ed me before. . . 8P

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

Really? I have no recollection of that at all! Looking forward to cafe emm, yummy! Have not been there in a year!

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Likewise.

I am drunk on two pints of Blackthorn cider. Whooo!!

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

You mean in general, or at this specific moment in time? I don't know many uni computer rooms that have cider on tap nearby.

Tomorrow though, we shall all enjoy the delights of cheap London Alcohol! Bring extra organs for donation money.

A friend has plumbed a beer tap into his living room wall. He hasn't yet told his landlord. This is funny.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Is his landlord a merry laughing chap who'll chortle gently, perhaps like Dumbledore? Or is he more like Darth Vadar in Empire?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Darth Rigby?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Darth Rigby?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

No.

So, where are we going? I need to know how smart/fabulous to look tonight.

Eleven pages for one night out - somebody sets up a weekly bowling night Charles is going to have to front up some more bandwidth....

Posted by Saltah'na (Member # 33) on :

So guys, uh, how did it go?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Fantastically.

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

I had a great time. Drank far too much but c'est la vie and all that. Sunday was spent feeding the hangover munchies

Posted by Saltah'na (Member # 33) on :

Any pics or something like that?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

When I get them off the digicam, or Liam or Diane have theirs printed and scan them, yes.

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

I am willing to offer large sums of money to prevent any of those photos being shown here.

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

It was quite fun. We drank, what, seven bottles of wine between the five of us? I didn't get a hangover though. Oh, and Liam is really hot.

Posted by Saltah'na (Member # 33) on :

Ugh. I think I need seventeen bottles of wine to remove that mental image.

*sigh* We gave them every opportunity. . . Young people today, I just don't know.

Posted by MaGiC (Member # 59) on :

I think I might have drunk most of that wine...and there were def more than 7 bottles if you include the desert wine etc at the cork and bottle. I seem to have a vague recollection of Liams hotness....

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

Oh goddamn it, I'm not good at this, okay?

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

You're not good at getting drunk?

Practice, practice, practice! Swing by Baltimore on your way back, we'll hit The Bar. You'll be seeing triple for a week.

Looks like the guys get prettier at closing time too.

/me can attest to that

Okay, I've got the friggin picture scanned. Where's Flare upload?

Here it is:
http://lobotomy.pleh.net/~flareupload/uploads/53/picture2.jpg

I don't know why the quality's like that. Blame the scanner.

Oh, and I found a few surprises in my prints. It seems someone took pictures with my camera while I was in the loo.

Lee's doing that blonde frosting shit! Diane's Asian! AHHHHHHHHH!!!

Internal cranial pressure has exceeded mass capacitance limits. Standby for energetic boundary reshaping anomaly.

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

So who is who?

Is the blonde dude Lee? 'Cuz it looks and smells like Liam. I think Lee is the big dude wondering where his Worf costume is.

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

From the left it's me, Clare, Lee, and Liam.

Posted by Ultra Magnus (Member # 239) on :

Liam's hair is very 1999.

Posted by Saltah'na (Member # 33) on :

Any more pics?

Posted by Tora Regina (Member # 53) on :

That's the only one I've got of the four of us. I'm sure Lee has lots on his digicam. Go hassle him for them.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

I did have them, but then the floppy they were on went tits-up. I'd have to retrieve them from my home PC, and what with Kate's grandfather passing away, you know. . .

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

My condolances.

I have some on my camera, but I have two rolls of film ahead of it that need to be developed. Couple that with a broken scanner, and poo-ness ensues.

Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :

Good God, Liam, the hair...

Posted by Ultra Magnus (Member # 239) on :

Liam, it seems, is a pop sensation.
