C'mon SNOW BRING IT!

I don't know if Mother Nature surfs the web, Snay.
Posted by First of Two (Member # 16) on :
I got'cher snow right here, bird boy... you're not getting any till you take back what you said.
Posted by Tahna Los (Member # 33) on :
Please, take our cold weather. Take our -18 degree Celsius weather with wind chill of -26.
Goddammit, it's been like that for the past month.
Posted by Da_bang80 (Member # 528) on :
HA! S'at all you got? That's considered a mild winter day. Most of the time we average winter highs about -26 degrees Celsius. But it's been pretty warm the last little while. only about -16 degrees the last little while. Morning lows average about -30 degrees Celsius BTW. If you want cold and snow. Move to Canada. Well Saskatchewan anyways. It's usually pretty cold here.

Although I'm also from the Mid-Atlantic states (Snay's general area), I must sneer at anything that this coming storm is going to throw at us. I've been in Syracuse, New York while they were getting three feet dumped on them, and more!
I have a feeling that classes will be canceled on Monday...

Warm and sunny her in bueatiful Fort Lauderdale beach....and look the bikini girls are tanning! Gotta go! Enjoy the snow guys!

Oooh! One day I'm going to go find you and whap you a good one with a nice big snowball.

Oh man, what I wouldn't give to have the city inundated with snow instead of inundated with NASCAR fans. God I hate the Daytona 500.
Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :
On a related note, we've just been out window-shopping 4wd vehicles. While still tempted by the Toyota Rav4, its inherent driven-by-hairdressers factor has tended to rule it out as a real choice. We couldn't get a look in at the Honda CR-V because the dealer also does Citroens and seemed far more interested in selling them instead. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, Snay will be dismayed to hear, almost won but was ultimately beaten by the Land Rover Freelander.
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
Well, the regular Cherokee trumps the Grand any-day.
We got some snow. Not a lot. But it's going to snow again tonight, and they're forcasting that this new storm won't stop until Monday ... which means that in my fourth week of the semester (going two days a week), I will have missed HALF of my scheduled classes due to this stuff.
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
What are you doing?! No, no more snow! Heat, warmth, sunlight, bring it!
Oh, and the European Cherokee is just the Liberty. I'd rather take the Grand Cherokee over their Cherokee. The Freelander had to be expensive though. Is it the 4-door or the 2-door with the soft top?
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
I'm talking about the Cherokee Cherokee, not the Liberty Cherokee. Cherokee trumps Grand Cherokee, no mention of European models, which would be pointless, since the Cherokee was discontinued a few years ago.
Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :
Snow? Don't talk to me about snow. It's a regular Rura Penthe out there. Snow banks around my house are almost taller than my house. Regular temperatures around here this week were around -20-30 with a windchill around -30-40.
Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :
Well, since we're only looking at 2nd-hand, it could well be that the Cherokees we saw were old models. Certainly they only had GCs in the showroom. GCs were all that were available new.
We really want the 5-door, the 3-door Freelander is nice but doesn't really make for a family car, if you see what I mean. I think I've just about got Kate persuaded that if she has the running-boards added (they're not standard) I get the extra headlamps that look like torpedo launchers. I may have to give it a Danube-class name, some river or something. . . 8)
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
I assumed since he was looking at newer vehicles (CR-V, Rav4, and Freelander), that he'd be looking at a (Liberty) Cherokee, not a (Cherokee) Cherokee. I stand corrected though.
Since we're discussing offroaders, do you know about the new Jeep Scrambler and the Jeep Compass being confirmed for production, Snay?
Oh, and call it the Rio Grande. You'll know it'll never wreck
Posted by Kazeite (Member # 970) on :
Apparently snow for Baltimore was recalled to Central Europe
Escuse me while I de-snow my car. Again
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
You know there has already BEEN a Jeep Scrambler, right? Got a link?
The Compass looks elite.
Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :
That prototype from "Tango & Cash" would be cool to have. I mean, if the chassis is strong enough to absorb the recoil of a sidemounted! 40mm gatling gun, it must be right sturdy! :-)

Nothing beats a Hummer. Closest you can get to driving a tank.
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
I know there used to be a Jeep Scrambler, I'm saying they're bringing it back. TJ-L long-wheel base and TJ+ short-wheel base versions.
Now you can run down a deer AND carry it back for dinner

Pleh... now here's a SUV...
Toyota RSC
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
I wouldn't call the Toyota RSC concept a SUV, since it's missing the 'U' part (Utility). It's more of a rally sports car, hence the name RSC (Rally Sport Concept). Plus those tires have very little room vertically, which wouldn't be good for harsh offroading.
THIS is actually a very good SUV for both offroading and race track handling

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
Well, I was going to post about how I woke up this morning to see heavy snow, several more inches on the ground, after the forecasters said it wouldn't start until after noon today.
But seeing as how this topic has diverged about SUV's, I don't think I'll bother...
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
Snow... well the last time I saw snow was in March '02 at Great Mistakes... er, Great Lakes IL during boot camp.
Other wise living in places like California, Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina I don't see a lot of snow. SUV's on the other hand I do see a lot of. Unfortunately.
I know the RSC is a concept, but I think it's such a cool concept. I don't exactly see your point Matt, I'm sure it'd have a good rally suspension. Besides, my lil' RSC looks like it'd literally eat that Porsche of yours.
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
Woot!
Lots of snow on the ground. We had a storm yesterday, this storm now, and then we're getting a THIRD storm later tonight (snow thunder, too). I'm staying inside where its warm, and I'm going to clean the apartment and try to get caught up on my laundry.
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
We got Zero snow here yet again. Bastard weathermen.
Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :
Well, we went to have another look at the Honda CR-V today. Just missed the dealership closing, although we did manage to get a brochure. All the same it doesn't do a lot for us.
So we then went to have another look at the Rav4. It's still potentially in competition, but now we know we can afford a Freelander it's fading fast. We also tried sitting in the Toyota Land Cruiser - it's huge! And expensive (about 45K). I also tried out the MR2 roadster, which I'm not allowed to have. Damn. B(
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
I'm probably right between Snay and The359, and right now we've got about 8 inches on the ground, with no end in sight. And the weathermen said yesterday that the snow wouldn't start until noon around here! (Then the system moved a little further north...)
They've already declared a state of emergency, meaning that my classes for tomorrow are canceled. Yesterday I'd planned to return to the dorm early this afternoon, but now I'm holed up at home, sitting in front of the fireplace, with two cats curled up next to me...
I love weather like this!
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
Well, it's about four hours later. The weathermen are saying that we're only about a THIRD of the way through the storm here... and the official tally from New Castle County airport (about six miles away) is 16.5" -- and they're saying the worst, heaviest snow is yet to come! The forecast is calling for 24" to 30" now...
This is just incredible... I've only seen this much snow when I've been up in New York State, where they have the benefit of the "lake effect" snow blowing off of Lake Erie. Here, we're used to the snow turning over to sleet and rain because of the proximity to the ocean and warmer air... instead, we've got bitter cold (12F and -11C), with no forecast of a changeover where I live before the storm moves off.
Whew!
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
Its now snowing, started around 2pm. Claims say its supposed to snow constantly until Monday night, 16 - 24".
And yes, you can't get much bigger then a Land Cruiser/LX470. Have you tried looking at a Ford Maverick, Kia Sportage, Nissan X-Trail, Vauxhall Frontera, or Subaru Forester? They're decent sized SUVs of roughly the same size as CR-V, Rav4, and Freelander.
Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :
The snow came to State College today at 0830 right as I zipped past the mall on I-99. A drive to The City, sacking out in Jersey & in Columbia County and I STILL get whammed by it. Stupid state.

By the sounds of it, this storm that MinutiaeMan's getting is the one that's due to hit here on Tuesday... Those poor Newfoundlanders... Their rock is already covered in 5m of snow... Another metre won't help them much...
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
It's the same storm I'm getting hit by.
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
Yeah, it's the same storm... I live about an hour or a little more to the northeast of Snay, and a little ways south of The359 (more of a guess there since he's not as specific with his location).
My father owns a Subaru Outback -- I took it out early on Saturday morning, and while a few of the less-experienced drivers/morons in Delaware were spinning out, driving at unreasonable speeds, I was tooling along at about 35 MPH, slow and steady. It's a good, comfortable car with all the capabilities of a "traditional" SUV without the obscene size and extravagance. (IMO)
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
I'm right outside Allentown, PA. We were miraculously able to be the only part of eastern PA to miss the first wave of the storm Sunday morning.
And yes, that's the beauty of Subaru all-wheel drive. Or so the ad says...

i just worked the most intense weekend of my life.. on valentine's day i got up early to go over diana's and say many awkward things to her over candy, before working 3pm-9:30pm at wholefoods, finding diana crying at spike's and saying more awkward things to her, then working 10pm-4am at spike's, going home, sleeping a little and then reporting right back to wholefoods for 1pm-9:30pm, and then again to spike's for 10pm-4am, repeat sleep, repeat wholefoods at 1pm
around sunday morning i started hearing mumblings that the snow, which was delayed from the expected start on sunday, was going to be more than a foot.. halfway through my workday at whole foods, we had winter storm warnings playing on conveniently placed video screens designed to freak people into buying cases of water, bread and milk, and a riot ensuing.
you see, in rhode island, if you even mention the word 'snow' everyone goes and buy a weeks worth of food immediately. even light dustings, people will buy two gallons of milk and start freezing loaves of bread.. 'just in case'.. i think this is a side effect of the blizzard of 78, which shut down the state for over 8 days, right after data graduated starfleet academy.. or something
anywho, at 9:30pm i finished the most grueling day at wholefoods, having personally rang up $10,000 worth of groceries at my register alone, and then worked 10pm-3:15am at spikes and came home and slept for the first time in three days, having worked almost 40 hours in that time.
snow was expected for midday start, when i got up at 2, we've gotten some snow, but not even as much as a couple weeks ago.. so far, its supposed to continue well into tomorrow and the expectation is 18"-26" for my area.
at least i got to sleep, and skip class tonight. getting kind of bored though.

Up in Saskatchewan when someone says "snow" we say "same 'ol same 'ol" And go out for coffee.
When We get heavy snow and people need to go shopping we just jump in our big trucks and plow through.
Posted by Ultra Magnus (Member # 239) on :
There's shopping in Prince Albert now?
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
I can certainly understand that... but when the average total snowfall in a season is around 20 inches -- and we get more than that in a SINGLE STORM, then I'd call that a Big Deal.
Final total in Bear, Delaware: 24.5"
Posted by Wraith (Member # 779) on :
...and to think, about 1 inch bought the entire UK to a standstill. Mainly due to incredibly stupid people driving despite the weather warnings for at least the previous week!!!

I AM SNOWSHOVEL GOD. FEAR MY WRATH.
Well, that was how I felt after shoveling my car out from 20+ inches of snow PLUS what the snowplows piled on.
Bastards piled all the snow on our street DIRECTLY in front of my car. Maybe they didn't see it because it's white? I mean, we're talking about a pile of snow 15'x15'x4 1/2' In front of my car. HAD to be moved. Nowehere to move it but back into the road or over the fence into the back yard.
So I moved it.
Ow, my aching back.
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
Yes, because the guy operating the plow did it on purpose.
Silly me, I parked facing out but at the very back of the space. I spent about two hours shoveling today, and I dug out around the sides and the front. I've still got about a foot out from where I've cleared to hit the plowed section of the court. Tomorrow.
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
This statistic should either make you very proud, or else make your muscles ache even worse.
Given the average density and accumulation of snow in this area (Delaware and Pennsylvania), a driveway approximately 50 feet by 10 feet equals 5,000 cubic feet of snow... and weighs 10,000 pounds. (This little tidbit was in the newspaper this morning.)
Ow, my back...
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
So, Maryland got hit by the deepest snowfall in recorded weather-history.
So what happened this morning? Some ignorant molesting sack of horse dung waited until everyone went to work, moved the chairs & such they were using to mark their space (hey, you clear the spot, you KEEP the spot), and used his truck (with plow) to dig himself and his two roomates a nice area to park.
In the process, they:
Stole spaces from three residents
Completely blocked both the walkway to my building, and the dumpster
Pushed snow onto two OTHER vehicles which had been cleared out, one of which belonged to an 84-year old man.
I spent two hours just now digging a new walkway to my building (there was an alternate walkway, but you had to go halfway around the block). The snow was about seven feet high in spots, and it was a five foot dig from the cleared area of the walk to the parking lot. I also helped dig the two cars back out.
What did we do with the snow?
Poetic justice.
We dumped it on the truck with the plow. We put most of it between the plow and the front wheels. Mother fucking asshole.
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
Images out my window on the back of the house:
Our patio. That stone wall is probably a foot and a half tall at least. The sunken spot is where the dog has had her fun
The area behind the patio and the neighborhood behind that. You can see where they dug out the road that leads to the new section of the neighborhood where they are building condos.
It'd be better if I had pictures out the front of the house, but...I'm not on the front of the house. So live with it.

That snow looks pretty serious. And to think I was exited by about an inch. Which shut down every school in Lincoln except 2. One of which was mine . Still, did have a big snow fight; 6th form Vs everyone. We won .
