I just started getting this charming new virus this morning: quote: hello, I am from Switzerland and you'll don't believe me, but a trojan horse in on your computer. I've scanned the network-ports on the internet. (I know, that's illegal) And I have found your pc. Your pc is open on the internet for everybody! Because the services.exe trojan is running on your system. Check this, open the task manager and try to stop that! You'll see, you can't stop this trojan. When you use win98/me you can't see the trojan!!
On my system was this trojan, too! And I've found a tool to kill that bad thing. I hope that I've helped you!
Sorry for my bad english!
greets?
Attachment: "remove-services_tool.exe"
I might be somewhat more inclined to believe this message if I had a Windows machine in the first place, seeing as how my trusty iBook can't even catch a virus like that, and my Mac OS X firewall comes turned on by default.
Now, I already know that a big reason for the fast spread of viruses like So.Big and MyDoom are because people keep opening attachments, but after so much publicity spreading around, is it really possible that people will try to use this viru... er, I mean "tool"?
Or should I just stock up on more faith in the complete and utter stupidity of Humanity?

Oh no! Now I've been indicated! quote: We hereby inform you that your computer was scanned under the IP [probably fake, but deleted number anyway] . The contents of your computer were confiscated as an evidence, and you will be indicated. In the next days, you'll get the charge in writing. In the Reference code: #53404, are all files, that we found on your computer.
The sender address of this mail was masked, to protect us against mail bombs.
- You get more detailed information by the Federal Bureau of Investigation -FBI- - Department for "Illegal Internet Downloads", Room 7350 - 935 Pennsylvania Avenue - Washington, DC 20535, USA - (202) 324-3000
Today must be "send out stupid e-mail viruses" day...

Services.exe is a Windows system file, actually. It's part of the operating system and has to run all the time. That's why the task manager won't let you stop it.

Oh that's right, I remember reading about that trick in the past -- convincing people to remove critical files to ruin their computer. Very funny.
I still can't believe I've been indicated, though...

Yeah, this is old. I knew a girl who fell for it, and ended up uninstalling some important Java Virtual Machine stuff. Well, I say "important", but she didn't notice for ages.
Er, what was the question?

And to think Snape was so keen to get the Defence Against The Dark Arts job. Fool! It's obvious where the true power is. . . 8)

"Is that a real department!?!" Well, it didn't used to be, but I haven't read the entirety of the Patriot Act, so I'm not really sure I'd be surprised...

This would be a great first line for something...

There's no way that the FBI would give it a name as simple as "Department for Illegal Internet Downloads". It'd be something that made alot less sense.
They also wouldn't put quotes around part of the department name...
What I want to know is, why does this person think that claiming to be Swiss makes him more credible? "The Swiss are neutral so someone from Switzerland couldn't possibly be trying to trick me!"
sigh

"There's no way that the FBI would give it a name as simple as 'Department for Illegal Internet Downloads'. It'd be something that made alot less sense." Not to mention that the acronym for it would be about three words long itself and have words like "PATRIOT" or "USA #1" in it.
