Piece of string. There are so many ways such a distinction could be quantified. . .
a) "Membership" of the Behaviour Group - that is to say, being a poster at the original Utopia Planitia WWWBoard, and/or subsequent incarnations - Starfleet Comm Relay, etc. - thereof. b) Member number in this current incarnation. But by Charles'own admission, when he was setting up this UBB he largely imported known members in an ad hoc manner. But then, I was one of them but now use a different ID. c) Going by number of posts. Which certainly confirms Tim and Simon as candidates for two of the positions. But then I've managed to clock up an impressive total in my newer ID, I wonder what'd happen if I added in my posts as The First One?
So, take your pick. Whichever criteria you used you'd likely end up with a shortlist of about ten - Tim, Sol, Liam, me, Andrew, Nim, Charles, Frank, Daryus, Fo2, Elim, Jeff (both flavours), Krenim, Monty, Siggy, Tahna, Baloo. . . You see the problem! Tell you what, just pick who you'd LIKE to have.

Also, incidentally, were the Vorlons and Shadows the #2 and #3 First Ones of the B5 universe? I mean, I don't think it was ever explicitly stated that they were, just that they were the ones that remained (along with Lorien, #1). They did say that the "Shadows were old when the ancients were young" so I took that to mean that the Shadows were the oldest First Ones (besides Lorien's species of course).

Jason, consider this: Some of us have been involved in this community for almost Ten Years. TEN YEARS!!!!! Maybe more. I'm not sure when I exactly joined this community, but I'm betting on Spring or Summer 1997. So, a highlight of what has been going on in that span of time:
Summer 1997: First year remarks at the University of Toronto come in. To say the least, they were quite dissappointing. November 1997: Started dating first girlfriend. That relationship would last 5 1/2 years. Summer 1998: Second year remarks also come in. Quite dissappointing too. Decided to start finding work while going to school Part Time. 1999-2000: Contract jobs during that period include a School Textbook company, an Insurance company, a government entity, and a utilities company. Continue to go to University Part-Time. Fall 2000: After a nasty fight with my parents, I end up moving out while they are on vacation in Las Vegas. End up getting a job at a small communications company. 2001: Decide to drop out of University to go to a private college. Sure, Tuition was a bitch, but after a year-long diploma, I find I learned more than several years at university. Spring 2002: Land a job at a Vacations company. Initial impressions are that this is a start of a career and an opportunity to settle down with 1st girlfriend. Fall 2002: Fired from job at Vacations company. Later find out my firing was to facilitate possibly the worst case of nepotism anyone has ever seen. 1st Girlfriend not happy at all. 2003: End up living in a room at a run down, crime ridden townhouse complex. Reduced to working minimum wage at Staples. Girlfriend of 5 1/2 years calls it quits in our relationship. Fall 2003: Later find a job as a Computer Technician. 2004: Went back to university part-time to finish off my degree. Fall 2004: After an uneventful year at Tech job, get laid off, hired by another computer store. 2005: Hired by Software company. Yippee!!! First well paying job, well, ever! Fall 2005: Would move to my very own apartment, never again will I share a kitchen and bathroom with anyone! Start dating 2nd girlfriend. 2006: Events include multiple raises at job and a promotion. Yeehaw!!! 2nd Girlfriend moves into apartment. 2007: More raises. I have been with this company for almost 3 years now and am enjoying it. Also dumped my now ex-girlfriend of almost 2 years, but am not regretting it.
And that's how I spent my last 10 years of my life.

Let's see. 1997 I was finishing up seventh grade. I homeschooled from then to graduation, so really the first six years I was here are a blur, one day being pretty much like the next. Spent 2002-2006 in college getting degrees in CS and computer engineering, partly just because they said I couldn't possibly do both in four years. Got over my eternal crush on my childhood little redheaded girl by realizing she really wasn't that pleasant and that other girls did exist. Pursued and went out with a few over the next few years, only to discover all were either already into someone else, potentially insane, or both. Finally found a spectacularly beautiful girl in my junior year while finally taking freshman engineering. A year later I finally convinced her she liked me, during my last semester. I graduated, went to grad school for electrical engineering and hated it with a fiery depressing passion. Got engaged, left my GRA spot to make more money, got a real job as an embedded systems engineer, and now I'm waiting for my fiancee to graduate so we can get married.
Bit of a jump from a 13 year old.
It's been a fun, hellish ride. I thank God I didn't get everything I wanted. I'd be miserable if I had.

A computer engineer is an electrical engineer who eschews the power and em fields side of electricity to focus more on computer hardware. We're more likely to design chips, lay out boards for processors, program embedded systems, that kind of thing.

I'm pretty sure Jay is no longer living. His profile here includes his birthdate, his ICQ number, and his location of Los Angeles. I looked up his ICQ profile, and it lists his name as John Webb. According to Social Security records (search page—can't link to results), John C. Webb of Los Angeles County, birthdate the same as Jay's, died October 7. Of course, it could be a different guy, but I think that's unlikely.

I'm not trying to be crass or anything but does anyone know how he came about his online name? I remember watching "Q-Less" [DS9] one day and noticed that one of the aliens bidding in Quark's auction of Delta Quadrant artifacts was called "Rul the Obscure". Is this where he got it from? I guess I can't ask him now.

I'm sorry that my querying brought this all up. It's sad to hear of his death but it's also nice to have some closure too. I'm sure I wasn't the only one wondering.

Looked at that way, there'd be a strong case for doing nothing at all. I doubt in their grief his family were saying "You'd have thought all the people he chatted to on the internet would have got in touch." If something were to happen to me, would my wife do anything about my online presence? I doubt it. Would she - or anyone - then be comforted by receiving something from a bunch of weirdo Trekkies three months later? I couldn't say.
Obit doesn't mention burial or cremation, perhaps we could just leave some flowers with a note. Oh, I don't know!

Well, I was thinking that if they won't give me her contact, I would just ask for some other way to send condolences/donations. I could always leave the URL to Flare.
I don't think it's innappropriate to send condolences at this point. If I were her, I would be comforted (somewhat) to know that there are more people out there who care. Better late than never.
In any case, I plan to ask for his grave site and pay a visit this Sunday with some flowers and a printout of the memorial thread. So if there's something more you want to say, be sure to post it before Sunday morning PST.

Doing nothing doesn't seem right, but I don't want to bring up any more reminders to his wife. My wife would think of all the good natured ribbing we have given each other over her pogo and my sci-fi stuff on the net, making her miss me all that much more.
I like the idea of a donation to a charity though, although there are a lot to choose from. American Cancer Society maybe the best choice.

Lee is more correct, though, in terms of timeline you need to go back to the old Behaviour stuff.
I was one of the people who re-registered on the first day. My old nick here was Altair and with the first accounts being saved in alphabetical order I got the first spot after the old admin accounts. But I think there are people that re-registered with higher numbers that were around on the old Behaviour forums longer than I was.
I sometimes check back on the forums here, but after I bought a new laptop I never bothered to log in, so no-one could see I was still around. I'm more active in tabletop RPGs nowadays and use Michael Dracon as nick on many other boards as well.
And it's a shame to hear about Jay. My condolences to his friends and family.

Well Im more of old-time-semi-lurker-ish type person. I can't even remember the first time I found the BG site and STZone, but I do remember chatting in that old Risa Beach chat quite a lot. Back then I called myself "The Overlord." I remember Tachy used to call himself The Overlord in that chat as well, so I changed my name Aaron the Overlord to stop people asking me to model a trek ship or whatever. Anyways I think I joined just before that Team 001 thing went live. Tachy was looking for people who wanted to model trek ships so I joined up, even though I was crap at making models.
I think I was in that Team 001 thing for all of a week or so before it was split off/booted out whatever happened at the time, as I'm buggered if I can remember what was going on at the time. When that happened I went from posting on the forum a lot back into my lurker mode.
Since then I was off trying to make models for Sector 001, 3D Warriors, 3D Warriors II, and finaly Scifi-art. But as I got older, doing my GCSEs, then my A-levels, and moving on to university I got tired of modeling things and tired of Trek. So I went AWOL from SFA, and kinda dropped off the net for a while. I'd occasionaly come online and lurk in some of the old places I used to hang out, like flare with most of the old BG people being on here.
I still model stuff occasionally, and I'm back posting on here. Still love my sci-fi, but I'm not the rabid Trekkie I used to be. I've been into online gaming with a passion for the last few years. Then got hooked onto World of Warcrack, but finally kicked that habit last year.

I got the trial edition of WoW last week. I played for about 3h the other day...I don't like it. Just isn't very interesting to me. (Big surprise; I've never once finished any single-player RPG I rented or bought). I feel like such a non-geek saying this but...I think I only like FPS...
Flare was the first and only forum I ever joined or kept tabs on. Never found one before here that didn't appear to be populated by the same type of p'taQ that you see on IRC.

It all started with Chris Gough and a few Trek sites he ran. Among them was chiefly "Obsessive Behaviour," with that very wrong British spelling of behavior. It just happened to have a little asstastic forum. And then came First Contact, and the new ships, and the niftiest little starship class database EVAR, Utopia Planitia (and eventually a better-designed Utopia Planitia 2).
Eventually Chris got all networky and crap, and a handful of us did the whole lots-of-sites-under-one-name thing.
And then the host's servers got hacked, or something. And there was no backup, sigh.
The sites were all restored into a nifty new conglomerate we named Star Trek Central (archive.org link unavailable 'cause they seem to have ignored simplenet), but the forums went elsewhere. We were desperate for hosting, so I pulled some strings and got hosting from a semi-colleague. Thus was the Starfleet Communications Relay, which lasted... uh, what, about a year?
Then there was drama and bullshit, and the SFCR went kaputski when I told someone to go do something in the control panel that would end up blowing the forums up, 'cause the code sucked. And then I was an idiot.
And then on March 12, 1999, there was Flare. Or rather, Solar Flare, since then shortened and relocated. (There's been a few reskins over the years. I think we're on the... er... Enterforum J now? SolarFlare was the -H, Flare 1 was the -I, the UBB6 version ("Flare 3") was the -J... and this newer skin ("Flare 4") is just a retrofit, not an entirely new model. Hmm, I guess that makes the next one the Enterforum-K. Mmm'k. Man. That's bad. I should probably go to bed.)
Around the same time, the rest of the Behaviour sites kinda went and did their own thing. Chris still runs his web shop, Behaviour Interactive Media. Somtimes he even drops by. The Great Link disappeared a while ago, as has been noted. Utopia Planitia became outdated, and our meager attempts to do yet another sequel never really materialized. What we did manage to get done has been released into DAC. The little 3D group self-destructed in a fit of drama. I think there was one more site, but I've misplaced all my Star Trek Central stuff. Ah well, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, bits to bits...
But Flare continues, and will continue to continue. Continuously.

To tell the truth, I thought we were still on Enterforum-H. And, apparently, I thought that back in August of 2002, also. And yet, a search reveals that, since May of 2001, we've been sailing aboard the good ship Enterforum-I. That must have been when the name changed from "SolarFlare" to just "Flare". Which meant a new class, and therefore a new ship. If there was an upgrade to the UBB version at some point, either I wasn't paying attention, or it didn't seem worthy of a new letter.

I'm not sure I ever posted the history of the Enterforums (Enterfora?) here. Let's see what I can piece together from the sources I have available...
USS Enterforum : The original Utopia Planitia board. Launched sometime in the summer of 1997, I believe. I didn't start lurking until around November, I think. But the official birthday is in... what, June? July?
USS Enterforum-A : The style of the original board didn't have registration. You just typed your name in at the beginning of each post. So, anyone could use any name. Including someone else's. That got to be a problem, so things were switched over to the UBB format. If I remember correctly, that was in January 1998.
USS Enterforum-B : The Behaviour Group's hosting server got hacked (as CC mentioned earlier), and everything was thought lost. Chris Howell set up a temporary board that was similar in style to the original UP board.
USS Enterforum-C : Apparently, the BG's host was only kind of hacked, so things ended up mostly restored. The board went back to UBB again, but it was located elsewhere and called the Starfleet Communications Relay (SFCR).
USS Enterforum-D : A corrupted version of the UBB code got uploaded to the server, making the forums not work so much. CC set up a temporary replacement at solareclipse.net (the name of the board wasn't changed yet, though).
USS Enterforum-E : Due to a server upgrade that didn't happen in a timely fashion, an old-school UP-style board had to be set up at Solareclipse.
USS Enterforum-E� : The temporary UP-style board disappeared without warning one day, so we all jumped over to a UBB board that Chris Gough had. It was about Porsches. At most, we were there for a couple days. According to one account, it was more like an hour. At the time, I declared it the Enterforum-F, but that's unofficial. That was in late October 1998.
USS Enterforum-F : The "official" E-F was the restored UBB SFCR. At this point, my records get kind of murky. I just have a reference to the "Y1.999K bug". I have to assume that means the transition from E-F to E-G happened in early January 1999.
USS Enterforum-G : Basically the same board as the E-F, but after whatever disaster occured on New Year's. By late February, though, there was some sort of bickering going on behind the scenes which resulted in CC's aforementioned bombing of the code. I suppose this is the only Enterforum to date to have been destroyed via self-destruct.
Interregnum : During the first couple weeks in March 1999, we took over the TNO ("The New Order", if I remember correctly) forums, which were run by one of our members. Along the lines of the E-E�, this wasn't an official Enterforum. It was just a place lent to us while the new Enterforum was built.
USS Enterforum-H : March 1999 - May 2001. The first Enterforum to last more than about six months. After CC blew up the E-G, he set up a permanent UBB board here at solareclipse.net called "SolarFlare". This is essentially what we're still using today.
USS Enterforum-I : May 2001 - present. The longest-lasting Enterforum by a factor of about 3.5 and counting. Really, the only reason this one gets a separate letter is because I called the E-H "SolarFlare-class", so, when the name changed to just "Flare", it was a new class. Therefore, it must be a new ship.
I hope that's all accurate. I'm working off of stuff I saved almost seven years ago, so I have to just accept what some of it says, even if I don't really remember it.

No, this hunk of junk is akin to the E-A at the end -- it belongs in the museum, not out roving the stars.
The Enterforum-I was based around UBB5. The initial reskin, going from black background to white background, also came with a major upgrade to UBB6. This upgrade is where the -J comes from. Trust me, it's a whole new set of code under there. From the year 2000. There have been lots of upgrades and refits since them, but it's still the -J.

According to this thread, we went to UBB6 on 27 May 2001. That also when I declared the change to Enterforum-I. So, it looks like the UBB5 version was still the E-H. And, even if it shouldn't have been, it's far too late for a retcon now. This is the Internet for gods' sakes. We have standards.

Ah, there's the gap.
The SolarFlare to Flare transition isn't marked correctly in your timeline. It was a reskin, a relocation, and a rename, but the UBB6 upgrade wasn't for a few months afterwards. There was no new letter assignment until the UBB6 migration, which had yet another reskin.

We were going to be upgrading to the self-written forum software now used on my former WoW group's site, but I'd been holding off until I could get it "right" for Flare.

THe day before you posted this, I picked her up at the airport here, drove her all over Seattle, met Charles at Zeek's (Simon was snowed out -- boo), geeked out a bit, then Charles went back to attend to a "guest". DIane and I wandered around the shopping district and the Pike Place Market, I showed her around Bainbridge and Poulsbo on Sunday (cuz Seattle's dead on Sundays), then we walked all over downtown on Monday, and Tuesday I saw her off on her train to Portland. *whew*
Last I heard from her she was dangerously close to setting up a cot in Powell's Books.

He did it again, I swear we were at 700 the other day. I do believe CC explained the reasoning for not changing the members numbers, but I do not recall it. Could be something to do with the DB, since you can change your screen name you can't run the DB with that.

There is a new newbie that posted in "Nx class Escape pods". I welcomed him nicely, and have nicknamed him The Nocturnal Trekker, because he hails from Hawaii and his posts show as having been posted at 3 in the morning. He is # 2080.

I think many of the more unenlightened newbies fail to see the heirarchy and the "society" that has developed here. They fail to realize that they should probably speak in whole sentences, and not in IM speak, and from what I've seen, a few are quite liable to run off their mouths in some fanboyish rant before thinking. For the sake of the forum, it is kind of good to be a bit tough on newbies. I have also observed that this group is filled with a fair bunch of smart-asses ( no insult intended)who like to joke around. * points to member status* You have to roll with the jokes and not be defensive right away.

I like the way we Flare-ites are tough on new people. I really can't stand IM speak, or people who ask dumb-ass questions that a five second google search could answer. And I'm glad to say this is one of the few forums where that's not a problem. And the more we keep out people who "tak lik dis an dont no how 2 uze a kibored" then the better off we'll be.

As I can recall, my one trip to Florida wasn't too bad. It was in March, and the humidity difference between here and there was jarring at first but not hard to get used to as NB gets rather humid in the summer as well.

The heating companies around here do that during the winter.
I hate the late spring weather here. It was 89F this afternoon, and is currently 39F. It is like mother nature is having a midlife crisis, and can't decide if it is spring or summer. Tomorrow's weather calls for 80% humidity, and a high of 92 friggin degrees.

92f = 33c = actually pretty comfortable for me. It does get annoying when people call me a cold blooded freak sometimes. They're just mad that I won't join them in complaining about how hot it is in an air conditioned building.

I love the cold. I can't sleep at night if my room is above 50F. And, I don't mind hot days that aren't muggy and humid. I just don't like when it fluxuates so fast, or when it is hot when it should be cold, or cold when it should be hot.

The office I work in has what we call "Thermostat Wars". I and a fellow co-worker are in offices that get no cross ventilation and have west-facing windows. Both of us like it cool. We have this idiot woman in our office that is always cold in the dead of summer. If she had her way, we'd have the heat on when its 70 degrees outside. The thermostat for our section is between my office and my co-worker and right across from the kitchenette. So the idiot is always 'washing her cup', then there's this pause and you hear the 'click click click' of her turning the office thermostat up to 77F or higher. Typically this will mean our two offices will be about 80-82F. So we go right behind her and crank it down to 70. This goes on all summer and she gets mad at us for not respecting the fact that she's cold. Forget the fact that she dresses in flimsy almost see-through crap (NOT a good thing) and we have to wear long sleeve shirts and slacks. We're wrong for not acquiescing to her widdle feewings. She expects us to accommodate her. She firmly believes that the 'average office temperature is supposed to be 78F'. But she also corrected our personnel director telling him that his use of the word 'grammatically' was wrong....that the word was 'grammoricly'. This to an individual who was an English major and worked in the public school system for 20 years. Then she wonders why she isn't respected? Total, complete, IDIOT.
My theory is: You can always put more clothes on, but there's only so much you can take off...legally.

I live in Denver now, the weather is in the 90s. This is my first summer in Colorado and I'm kind of surprised at the heat. Winter though is nice and cold. I love the cold. Up to me temperature would never exceed 60. However the mountains by my apartment still have snow. I drove up to Rocky Mountain National Park the other week to do some hiking about 2 miles above sea level (Denver is 1 mile above sea level) and while up there the snow was still knee deep (I'm 5-11 for reference).

I am that tall also. while I like it cold, I don't appreciate waking up to snow up to my waist, as often happens here in the winter and early spring. Only 60F here today though, not that bad.

As much as I hate to shovel it, the period after a heavy snow is absoutly beautiful. Around here, it is almost postcard perfect, with sno hanging from trees, and covering rooftops, all undesturbed and perfect.
