....AND WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!

7.6 billion years? Pshaw, they've got it totally wrong. The Doctor proved it's gonna happen in 5 billion years. That, and one of Britney Spears's songs will survive that long. So there!

Leave Britney alone!

I read the thread title and thought, "Finally."

I am so disappointed now, wow, you really ruined my weekend.

Well now i know how long i have to be able to beat off, now... Immortal Thwapage Music, mystro, plz?

Sounds like you really need to find a girlfriend.

Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :

Even a boy friend, just something.

Sounds like a Titan A.E. flashback sort of thing. And you know that there will be people commiting ritual suicide on the off chance that this happens 7.59999999 billion years early. I wonder if Dr. Kavorkian will be around then.....

And Ritten, I hear that all the time.

This is weird, I was having a massive wikipedia link clicking session last night, and one of the things I was reading about was this very thing. But it was said on there that Earth wouldn't be destroyed, although anyone around at the time would be very dehydrated and have a nice sun tan. [Cool]

Anyways, it said on there that the as the sun ages and expands it would expel it's outer layers, and that would reduce it's mass and by doing so would reduce it's gravity. So the Earth would spiral out and away from the Sun, and not fall into the Sun, but it would still be very crispy though.

I also remember reading somewhere that Europa would be a nice place to sit and watch the end of the world. The ice would melt into a giant ocean from the larger sun. So in 7.6 billion years, you can rent a boat and sail on Europa's ocean and watch the fireworks in style! [Smile]

Oh, god. The comments on that article...

Maybe it's a bit perverse of me, but I love new-earth creationists. They're such easy targets.

(Now, the question is: do I stoop to commenting, or if I do will my brain try to claw its way out through my skull?)

Posted by Zipacna (Member # 1881) on :

What I love is how the article ends by providing a few options for humanity to survive the end...because yes, humanity really isn't going to be extinct (or have evolved) anyway in a few billion years. We'd be lucky if we're not extinct by the end of the century the way we're going... [Roll Eyes]

All in all, it's just another brick in the wall...

Well, there is the old Maya or Aztec theory that the world will end on 12/12/2012. And who is to say that a giant meteor or asteroid doesn't collide with the earth in the next 7.6 billion yrs, destroying us in one huge coup de gras?

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

That Mayan calendar thing is a huge misinterpretation by some new-age people that's been passed around way too much. It's simply the end of one of their cycles (the Long Count cycle) and has no more significance than, for example, the end of a modern millennium. Most Mayan scholars discount the end-of-the-world theory entirely.

Interesting.

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

Well that's comforting!

'Cause if the mayans had set 2012 as the date, that would mean trouble, wouldn't it? I mean, they should know what they where talking about, they invented sundials, and booze enemas.

I remember watching something on the Sci-Fi channel where some crackpot said the world would end on my birthday, May 29, in the year 2002.

Happy Birthday..BOOM

How many times the current calender been altered?

What is the true date?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

The "true date" is... a completely meaningless phrase.

15,000,000,000-something.

TSN, any kind of dating system imposed is meaningless, in the overall scheme of things. As far as the petty human existence is concerned using the current system will work, for now.

That sounds about right, thanks Shik.

It's spelled maestro. Sheesh. *tosses you a towel*

When I was 8 years old, my tape-driven planetarium projector-mo-bob scared the living shit out of me by saying the Earth would be destroyed in 40 years by a black hole, then saying it was just kidding but it was something to think about since we wouldn't be able to detect if one *were* floating around near us. (I think we might notice everything scooching a few parsecs to the right, however.)

Futurama refs FTW!

Oh, and just to be fair, Sean, its "coup de grace." Brownie points for getting 'coup' right, though. [Big Grin]

Dan, that was short for mystro(ke).

Anybody else have one of those planetariums? Looked rather...ship-ish actually. Had 4 plastic domes for the 4 seasons, clear plastic with the stars drawn on; you'd put the dome over the light and it'd throw a projection onto the walls and ceiling; also, it had a red bowl-shaped cover for the light so you could look at the domes inside-out in the dark without ruining your night vision. It also came with a tape you could play, so it was like a real planetarium show; this is the tape I'm talking about, but now that I think on it, it wasn't played *in* the planetarium. I used my 2XL to play it. Oh God, 2XL!! Anyone remember that little fucker??

Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :

What's a 2XL? Is it a reletive of the 8-Track?

Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :

Was that that robot? I think I had one of those. Quite a few tapes for it I had.

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Fuck yeah, 2XL! I had no idea those were still around when you were a kid!

Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :

I had the second generation from the 90s, which used tape cassettes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-XL

Y'know I think there was even game show based around it.

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

Yeah, that's the one I'm talking about, with the cassettes! Man, the nostalgia I'm feeling right now is the most intense I've ever felt. I'm enveloped in a sweeping urge to scour eBay and beg money from people to buy one...

I had forgotten about that thing.....
