7.6 billion years? Pshaw, they've got it totally wrong. The Doctor proved it's gonna happen in 5 billion years. That, and one of Britney Spears's songs will survive that long. So there!

Sounds like you really need to find a girlfriend.

Sounds like a Titan A.E. flashback sort of thing. And you know that there will be people commiting ritual suicide on the off chance that this happens 7.59999999 billion years early. I wonder if Dr. Kavorkian will be around then.....
And Ritten, I hear that all the time.

This is weird, I was having a massive wikipedia link clicking session last night, and one of the things I was reading about was this very thing. But it was said on there that Earth wouldn't be destroyed, although anyone around at the time would be very dehydrated and have a nice sun tan.
Anyways, it said on there that the as the sun ages and expands it would expel it's outer layers, and that would reduce it's mass and by doing so would reduce it's gravity. So the Earth would spiral out and away from the Sun, and not fall into the Sun, but it would still be very crispy though.
I also remember reading somewhere that Europa would be a nice place to sit and watch the end of the world. The ice would melt into a giant ocean from the larger sun. So in 7.6 billion years, you can rent a boat and sail on Europa's ocean and watch the fireworks in style!

What I love is how the article ends by providing a few options for humanity to survive the end...because yes, humanity really isn't going to be extinct (or have evolved) anyway in a few billion years. We'd be lucky if we're not extinct by the end of the century the way we're going...

Well, there is the old Maya or Aztec theory that the world will end on 12/12/2012. And who is to say that a giant meteor or asteroid doesn't collide with the earth in the next 7.6 billion yrs, destroying us in one huge coup de gras?

That Mayan calendar thing is a huge misinterpretation by some new-age people that's been passed around way too much. It's simply the end of one of their cycles (the Long Count cycle) and has no more significance than, for example, the end of a modern millennium. Most Mayan scholars discount the end-of-the-world theory entirely.
