So, has any one else seen the new designs for the coins in Britain?
For those that havn't there's this BBC page, or someone even geekier than me has probably got them on Wikipedia allready.
Personaly, I don't like them.

it feels like i'm looking at the shield through a broken window...
very modern looking, but i wonder how good they'll look once they get knocked around a bit.
Posted by Kosh (Member # 167) on :
Kind of hard to tell much from the picture, but they look fugly.

Not convinced about them myself, will wait until one turns up in my wallet before deciding. Personally I quite like our current money, but then again when it comes to stuff like this I'm a bit old fashioned. I also wonder whether these will be the last designs ever, if we join the Euro? Just a thought...

If they EVER do that to american currency...
George Bush would have a hard time putting it together. Might get confused about where the eagle head goes...

They've gone forty years without changing the coins, and they decide to do it now? I mean, let's be fair : the queen is over 80 years old. Most likely, it won't be too much longer before they have to change the fronts of the coins, anyway.
Posted by Fabrux (Member # 71) on :
Maybe they're figuring by the time she keels they'll adopt the Euro.
Posted by Diane (Member # 53) on :
I like it, actually. Modern is the right word.

I heard $5 bills will be purple fairly soon.

You'd have thought there was some archaic law about cutting up the royal coat of arms like that...
Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :
I like them, especially the new one-pounder, but I still think there's too many of them. :-)
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
As a set they look nice, but I imagine as individual pieces I don't think they'd look very good without a design unto themselves, but then I suppose that's what old Liz is for. Anyway, there's something...wrong about separating the three lions like that.

I like the polygon shapes... I wish our money in the US was more like that. Of course, I wish they'd put more color in our paper money too. Can barely see the color now.
It's funny I wasn't like that and used to make fun of Canada's Monopoly Money. Then I spent time there and saw how convenient it is. Quick glance and I know what bills are what.

I rather like the new designs for most of our US bills. It's nice modernization of the look. Now if they'd just redesign the $1 bill... in 100 years, all the current ones might be out of circulation...
Posted by Johnny (Member # 878) on :
I don't mind these new ones, though they obviously won't look as shiny and (dare I say it?) sexy as this even when they come out of the press, nevermind once they've been in circulation for a while.
I hope they'll still do the occasional variation for special events and such, like they currently do. I love looking through my change and finding a design I haven't seen before. It's a nice little surprise after breaking a note.

They are. I think they started circulation last week

Yeah, I saw one a few days ago. Kinda looks like a regular bill that someone spilled Kool-Aid on.

Doesn't Austrailia use plastic money? ( the history channel special I watched could be wrong)

Check out the new five dollar bills. They have little 5's hidden all over.

10's and 20's and 50's have been doing that for awhile. (Wouldn't know about 100's. Heh.)

Not the bills in my pocket.
Posted by HopefulNebula (Member # 1933) on :
Then the bills in your pocket are old. They're phasing 'em out, though.
I got an old-style (small portrait, monochrome, not shiny) $20 bill from an ATM last month, and it was surreal. I hadn't realized how long it's been since I'd seen one.

Ic was looking at some of my money while in NYC ( I was told to count it 3 times a day), and I saw many different types of bills, from the newer to the old ones.

Told to count it 3 times a day? Way to make you guys look like backwater hick tourists.

The breaking up of the royal coat of arms on the new British coins reminds me of Mexico's coins. The 1, 2, 5, and 10 peso coins are made up of two pieces; an outer ring made from a different metal than the center piece. The outer rings of the 1, 2, and 5 peso coins each have different rings from the Aztec sun stone while the center of the 10 peso coin has the center of the sun stone. The four coins together contain most of the Aztec calendar.

Why would you repeatedly count your money? Pickpockets are not going to take your wallet, remove a portion of the money, then put your wallet back.

Also, fingering you cash in public is an excellent way to get yourself mugged.

We were told to do it in our hotel rooms, or on the coach busses that we traveled on. I managed to only spend about $100 out of $200. Mostly on food. I don't want to see another McDonalds for 6 months. The hotel room was a piece of shit. -The Hotel Pennsylvania, though it is situated right near Madison Square garden, and only 18 blocks from Times Square, though there are two peep show houses located within a block, so the location is not THAT ideal. No one smiles in NYC! A man in a mini van told all 200 of us to fuck off as we crossed the street to load the buses to go home yesterday.

They made you pay for your food?? I had a trip in 8th grade to Washington DC, which was a 24 hour drive for us (and we actually did spend 24+ hours on the frigging *bus*) and our meals were taken care of. We paid $650 to get to go, and the company got discounts on tours, food, hotel rooms, etc. so we could spend all our pocket money on fauxkleys and Siko and Ralex watches.

Nice to know the Apple hasn't completely cleaned up it's act.

When I went to DC in 7th grade, the meals were paid for in the trip price of $275, with 50 bucks pocket money for trinkets. This time though, we paid $550, and I brought 200 for food and gifts, but it would have been too expensive to include meals. THe only paid for meal was at the ESPN game zone. Crappy brunch...
But, paid for meals would have meant that every one would have had to go with a chaperone who held the vouchers, or require everyone to go to the same restaraunt. We got to walk around the area in groups of 4 or more for most of our exploration time. THat way, we could shop where we wanted, eat where we wanted etc. There were some restaurants right near the hotel for breakfasts and stuff, namely McDonalds and a Chinese place, with a starbucks just down the road.
We might be invited back to Lincoln Center as all groups recieved long standing ovations, from the community members that went, not just the parents that attended. Appearently they printed 1000 more programs than they needed, so everybody got to take a bunch home with them. I might try to sell most of mine on E-bay, not that anyone would want them, but I might make a few cents off of them. I have a few for myself, which I might get signed by my teacher.
Plans for next year's trip include Chicago and Disney World. I think Carnegie hall has also invited us back for their 2009 or 2010 season. Probably be majorly expensive though.

Yeah, we were held on a pretty tight leash, being scurvy little rats of 13 or so. The adults misbehaved more than we did though. They got in a swearing match with the chaperones from another group over seats at the Marine Corps Band show.
Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :
Well, no swearing match here. Some of the teachers were a bit awe struck at the view from the Top of The Rock. It was beautiful. Made me wish I had a girl friend to enjoy it with.

*clicks tongue* Awwww. ;D
Posted by Sean (Member # 2010) on :
Thats what the girls around me said too. If only they werent taken. Times Square was beautiful at night. I felt required to go to the huge Toys R Us for my brother, to get some pictures of the Ferris wheel there. I have since developed a fear of revolving doors. They are trying to eat me...
Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :
I've been scared of revolving doors since I was little. There's always just a moment of hesitation before I enter one, and I do it a bit too quickly to be ...well, normal. Kind of like "get me the fuck in there before it chops my arm off."
