I just heard this today: South Park has been nominated for an Academy award: Best Song, namely "Flame Canada".

I like South Park. Although I have not seen the movie, someone DID tell me about the song. Right now, I don't have any beefs towards the song, as it is important to the movie itself (in a way). What my beef is that those Academy award idiots NOMINATED this song, which would be legitimizing anti-Canadian content.

If that song wins, I don't think I will watch the Oscars anymore........

It's fun to be anti-Canadian, though. Canada can't do anything in response.

*ahem*. It's "Blame Canada", not "Flame Canada". The movie isn't a bout a load of people writing bad posts on Canadian newsgroups.

Is it me, or are most countries in the world simply incapable of laughing at themselves? The British have for years had to put up with amazingly wrong cultural stereotypes from US TV, everyone from Mr Chumbley-Warner "Good day to you sir. i wear a bowler hat. therefore I am British", to cockney cab drivers "Guv'nr, I wear a flat cap guv'nr, coo, isn't London foggy. Strange, cause it's always foggy on TV, and rarely foggy in real life", and we don't kick up a fuss and boycott US TV. We just grin and bear it, and sip our tea, smug in our own sense of superiority and confident that no-one has ever battered Monty Python, not even us.

If you watched the movie anyway, you'd see the whole things about intolerance, and about the fact that people never want to address the root of the problem, but instead want to find scapegoats. Some kids go to see a Canadian movie and come out swearing? Bomb Canada, rather than trying to understand what the kids are thinking. Some kids go and shoot up a high-school? Blame everything from guns to the internet, to TV, to the amount of sugar they eat daily.

Just try not to be so much up yer own arse, okay? Are you going to say that if they nominated Uncle Fucker (whcih they should have, but didn't have the balls to), it would be legitimising Fucking of Uncles?

Besides, it's a brilliant song. Although for me, not as good as "It's easy, m'kay".

And remember, "When Canada is dead and gone, they'll be no more Celeni Dion".

Oh come on people. First of all, it's a brilliant song. Secondly, it is EXACTLY what is needed. Why? Because it's better produced than the pap coming out of Disney these days, and skewers the whole darned industry in the process. (And by this I'm refering to the fact that a jokey movie about foul-mouthed youngsters has better musical values than the "big" companies.)

Elim: Whaddya mean you don't see how it merits the nomination? Sol's right, it's a brilliant song. Far better than the pap that was in Tarzan. It deserves to win.

Just as a test, how many people came out of South Park humming along to Blame Canada, or singing Uncle Fucker? A whole lot moer than those who came out singing any of Phil Collins' songs.

Argue that any of the songs that have been nominated are better than it, and I'll argue that Colin Baker was the best Doctor Who.

Every since I read Henry V and the scene with stereotyped members of the four areas of the British Isles, I've often wondered what some think about us. A question I'd like to ask our non-US citizen contributors: What stereotypes of the different parts of the United States stick out most in foreign minds?

Liam, yes, I understand the purpose of the song. I even mentioned that in my original post. Again, it's not the song that I'm against (I was mildly amused when I first heard of it). What my problem is that it's nomination would send the wrong message saying that "it's okay to make very offensive songs against any group of people cuz you'll win an Oscar or a Grammy". It's the first step in legitimizing hatred and racism. Well, I'm wondering if those Academy Awards doofs ever understood the plot of the movie in the first place, or they nominated the song simply because it sounded cool.

Well, I give up. The recent winners of the "Best Song" Oscar weren't really deserving, to me that is.

Tahna Los: Relax, dude! When has Hollywood (and that crowd) ever represented anything other than egotistical, self-indulgent air-heads trying to impress one-another with how much better they are than the rest of the "cattle"? Hollywood is the only place you can make a movie that appeals to everyone and get pilloried for "pandering to the masses"? It's the only place you can make a box-office bomb and be praised for challenging everyone else's values.

Face it. They're unhooked from reality and like it that way. Never mind they're ostensibly in the business of mass-producing "entertainment" for the "masses". After all, it's the masses who fork out $7.50 or so per ticket to see this stuff. At least some of their product had better appeal to the folks with money to spend, or they'd all be broke and looking for something else to do for a living.

Perhaps you could explain it better. From your argument, "Braveheart" should never have been nominated for anything because it encourages anti-English feelings. You cuold also make similar comments about "The Devil's Own", or even "Gone with the Wind".

Calling "Blame Canada" racist is laughable, and completly misses the point.

Yeah, and let's not forget the stereotyping in "Titanic," including the reiteration of the untrue story of the officer who shot himself.

Boo, Titanic!

I mean, 'Blame Canada' is an ironic song which, despite the lyrics, is about how STUPID it is to blame other people for things that are your fault (which is what much of racism is, blaming the other guy for your problems). (ie, 'darn [insert group here] for coming in and taking my job')

I haven't seen the movie, and even _I_ know that.

Bravehart was a story of real history ... 'Blame Canada' is the product of someone's warped sense of homour .. you can't catagorize them as the same thing ..

But let me say this: If someone wants to nominate the song .. so be it .. I don't care, and I'm Canadian .. It's a great place to live .. nice country side, great people, and good beer !!!

As long as I take that with me ... I could care less if a SOUTH PARK song makes it .. It's comedy .. comedy is meant to cause contriversy .. that's what's so funny about it !!

*wrenches topic back to subject*

Put it this way: A song that says something bad (and self-admittedly untrue) about a country no more promotes racism and discrimination (and incidentally, when did "Canadian" become a racial distinction?) than a picture of the national trapshooting convention promotes homicidal violence.

As a Canadian(well, almost anyway), I fell that I should say something, it is true that we can't really defend ourself against our neighbour at the south, but that doesn't justify your actions.

Worst come to worst, if the American DO try to take over Canada, I guess I'll just have to grab my Taiwan passport, get on the next plane, and enjoy the "fire works" from TV

Now who said America would invade Canada? If we did that, Americans would have to run the Molsen and Moosehead breweries, a situation that makes my head spin just to contemplate.

"Blame Canada" is a joke song from a joke movie. Not all humor is meant to cause controversy, but almost anything remotely humorous will eventually offend someone's sensibilities.

Keep in mind that the Academy Awards is not morally equivalent to the Nobel or Pulitzer prizes. The Academy Awards is the movie industry's way of patting itself on the back while, hopefully, seeming to recieve accolades they deserve. Sometimes they pick movies and categories that justly deserve praise, but if they don't, who's to be offended? They (collectively) chose who, from among themselves, for most categories, will recieve an award. They have a vested interest in the outcome. If "Blame Canada" wins, it will be of no significance, except that enough people in the Motion Picture Academy liked it that they voted for it.

Big deal.

Just out of curiosity First, did you find the movie funny? I thought it was the best film of last year, as I keep saying.
And all the songs were brilliant. They made me realise how stale Disney's music has got. The fact that it was written by two people, one of whom also did the music, is even more incredible.

I really like "It's easy m'kay". But I can't pick an out and out favourite.

And "Blame Canada" DOES deserve to win. It's a great song with great lyrics, from a great film. Natch.

Oh, and anyone who say the film: Did they think that anything went to far? I heard that IN US screenings people often walked out. I went to packed screenings twice and no-one left. And I didn't think anything went beyond "funny" into simply "offensive".

Well, I'd bet money that the people who walked out were probably people who hadn't watched SP much in the first place.

As for the movie.. yeah, I kinda liked it. Of course, I liked the message behind it. The songs were very funny, and I just LOVED The Mole's character.

But... why did they have to show us what Kenny looked like, what did that add to the movie? I just don't get that subplot.

I thought that showing Kenny was suppossed to be a treat for long-time fans, and a way to seperate the movie from just being another TV show.

I think the thing that was most shocking was the "ping-pong ball trick". Which wasn't even true. Tsk.

And did you hear any Brits complain when Cartmen yelled out "Dude, that British kid is fucked up"? No.

Probably cause he wasn't actually British. I wonder if that was just an incredibley subtle dig at TNG fans. Thatnks to Patrick SStewart, all Americans now think that the French sound like they've just finished an advert for the Royal Shakespear company, so no doubt Brits sound like they sit around all day chomping on onions and drinking coffee.

Ya know, I'm currently producing a version of the US anthem that's (hopefully)going to be broadcast on the radio. It's basically bagging the living hell out of them. But I didn't do it with malice, only to make people look up and maybe have a laugh.

When people start analysing everything to ensure that its politically correct, they're losing sight of the fact that they are attempting to inhibit freedom of speech. Now, I personally found the song hilarious, but then I also thought that the Bruces sketch from python was hilarious. Come on, seriously, if you give shit (and we all dish it out on a regular basis) you have to be prepared to take shit. Get a thicker skin, or conversely realise that things aren't generally created with the intention of starting racial bigotry.
