Gore still has a chance --

That shows landmass, not population.

Urban areas tend to vote Democratic, rural Republican.

Hell, Gore got 83% of the Baltimore City vote ... and in MD, all you need are Balt. City, Howard, Baltimore Counties, and PG and Montgomery Counties and you get the electorates ... and those are all heavily democratic, while the rest are republican (but the republican counties are very sparsely populated)

Look at Md on the map ... just a couple splotches for Gore, yet Gore got 57% of the MD vote! Don't believe maps like these, they're Rush Limbaugh's way of comforting himself.

Besides, didn't you see the popular vote breakdown?

This goes to show why we need the electoral college... This way rural areas don't get swallowed by the vote of urban areas.

Or why the Republicans need to try to crack the cities. Popular vote should elect the president, otherwise your vote for the president DOESN'T count, if the ECs can elect whomever they want, regardless.

Maybe in 04 someone should run ads that say:
"Don't vote for any Presidential Canaidate, show the world what we think of the EC."

Then it would look like this
Bush 5%
Gore 5%
Nader 1%
No One 89%

JeffR, maybe you misunderstood me ...

I don't mean to speak out against the EC.

What I mean is, the map gives a distorting view of how many people voted for Gore v Bush.

The map doesn't show population density, etcetra. Therefore, while its a nice display for Rush to throw around and rant about, that's all it is ... a nice display that doesn't accurately represent the numbers of people who voted.

Yes, but I didn't insinuate either way... I was pointing out that it does look staggering.

You immediately attacked Rush Limbaugh because you saw 'www.rushlimbaugh.com' in the url, but you know niether what he said about it, nor what I meant by posting it.

The article I drew it from was about the importance of the Electoral College, in which Rush Limbaugh makes a good point...and I would have given the article, but unfortunately, they updated the page and the link is gone . Oh well, not like you'd read it anyways

Actually, I did hear a bit about what Rush was talking about yesterday ... he was talking about how the vast majority of counties voted for Bush, not Gore, and he was talking about USA Today ... he completely ignored the actual number of votes, but I turned him off after a short period of time (Bon Jovi's "It's My Life!" is much better than Rush...)

Actually, I would read it. I'd just keep muttering, "what a big fat idiot you are, Rush" the whole time

Frankly, I see the map as why the EC might be a bad idea. I'm surprised Rush didn't hit upon that ... look at CA -- Gore didn't get that much area, but he got the state.

Did you listen at all to the bit about Maryland? Because of the Electoral College, the rural votes were negated by the urban. Bush won all those rural counties, but Gore won the entire state, simply because of the urban votes. All the Bush votes out in the rural areas counted for jack shit, because of the Electoral College.

Not that it would've mattered in this case, 'cuz Gore got the popular vote too, but yeah, the EC doesn't work in Maryland. As long as he's got Baltimore City, he's got the state essentially!

It also doesn't hurt that most of the Maryland colleges and universities (including UMCP, Towson, Morgan, etc) are VERY liberal.

Yes, I do... most universities are liberal dens, which makes me want to puke.

However, I returned to my hometown to vote, of which Genesee County proudly voted for Bush.

TSN, the EC balances the overwhelming majority of urban areas over the nation, not just a single state. In Maryland, with the EC, the candidates would only have to visit Baltimore. However, they would have to still campaign in every other state as well. However, without the EC, all the candidates would need to do is visit the most populated cities, ie. NY, LA, Miami, Chicago and Seattle.

I'll have to look up those statistics, but I believe it's a statistical fact that the average Republican has at least a college degree, while the average Democrat has a high-school education.

Of course, that might be a reflection of the high number of inner-city and minority democrats, and shouldn't necessarily hold true for all of them. Obviously, a number of college profesors are Democrat/Socialists.

Fine, you're smart. I read that before. and probably will again. Good for you. I'm really proud. I just don't want to read it again.

This discussion about wether or not Democrats are dumber than Republicans is terribly petty. None of you definitively say wether one side is smarter than the other. Perhaps at least partly true. After all, we've all seen evidence that 'educated' does not necessarily equal 'smart,' just as 'udenducated' does not necessarily imply 'stupid.'

However, those cases are in the minority.

As to blacks -- I never said anything about them.

I said "inner city residents tend to be democrats" a fact borne out by the map above, which shows democrat votes largely corresponding with urban areas.

since a large number of inner-city schools are notable for their large class sizes, low budget-per-student, lower-than-average quality of education, and high dropout rate, it is reasonable to say that inner-city residents tend to be less educated.

(1st-year College Philosophy/Logic follows)
Therefore, Using Boolean logic, we see that "tend to be democrats" and "tend to be less educated" are both large subsets of "inner city residents," and will tend to (but not necessarily always) overlap.

Of course, this fails to account for SW Pennsylvania, Appalachia, and the Mississippi valley, none of which qualify as Inner City but all of which voted heavily Democratic. (Except that those regions are noted for educational insufficiencies as well.)

So, if college is so "liberal" and all that, how does it hold true that a conservative can get though without being "changed"?

Maybe, just maybe, those folk who are very conservative already can afford to send little Chip and Buffy to school. While immigrant family man Joe Union has to settle for a generation or two later for family who wants to work full time and go to college.

Different cultures place different values on education that vary from social level to class level.

And I'll say again, being a Democrat does not mean you are a liberal.

The idea that a Democrat is a liberal is about as accurate as saying that a Republican has a white hood in his closet and likes to go lynching blacks on Friday nights.

Am I a liberal? Damn straight. Why am I a liberal? Well, honestly, I was always more of a moderate ... before I came to Towson U., I:

- Supported the death penalty
- Supported guns
- Supported *some* other Republican party positions

(I have never *EVER* wavered in my belief that just because you are gay you should be denied certain rights such as marriage -- I have always thought of myself as an advocate - at least to my circle of friends - of Gay Rights, that is a position that I have never changed on, nor *will* ever change on)

Um, sorry, just wanted to make that clear for some reason ...

Well, I changed my views. I'll admit -- I became more liberal (I've always been a democrat) simply in order to get in bed with cute girls.

Then I found myself defending liberal positions against more conservative friends of mine, and came to the realization that I am a liberal.

I AM A LIBERAL!

"Let no man tell you different, you are Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod!"

Well, in my case, it was,

"Dammit, let no Conservative tell me different! I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod!"

Oh, wait ...

Right, back to the topic. Anyway, that's why I'm a liberal. Mind you, less than 6 months ago, I was much more moderate ... I called myself a "conservative Democrat" ... hey, cute girls can do such amazing things to a person ...

Wait, what was the topic? Oh, right.

It's unfair to group Republicans/Hatemongers as it is to group Democrats/Liberal. Obviously, Republicans are more to the right, Democrats more to the left, but that doesn't mean a person is neccessarily a liberal any more than they are a member of the KKK.

Yes? No?

Maybe so?

Now as for the reasoning behind the first number, how else do you explain people voting for Gore? Gore is liberal. People vote for Gore. Therefore, said people are liberal. Make sense?

'Course, then you've got your 2% who are dumb enough to believe that Bush is stupid, and voted for Gore on THAT basis...

As for the KKK number, considering the total membership of the KKK is in the tens of thousands, and something like fifty million people voted for Bush...

First: I've been wondering for a long time. You have a high IQ--great. You're informed--wonderful. So why do you settle for a librarian position? You're obviously unsatisfied with it, and you certainly don't need to be a librarian to read anything you want to.

Anyway, so basically all liberals are uninformed morons and all conservatives are well-educated half-saints, is that right? Good, let's move on.

Uh, non-citizens can't vote to begin with. I KNOW.

So, the center people, true independent people, say, like me, tht voted for Gore, then voted for a Rep. Senator, a Dem. Rep., a Rep. City Council member... I am either wishy washy, or I vote for the better person for the job.

Of course, there is the third posibility that you don't know anything about the people you're voting for. Not that I'm accusing you of that, just that it would also fit the description.

Ritten,

You break the trend.

You do not fit in.

Therefore, you do not conform.

The U.S. is all about conformity.

::Bludgeons Ritten to death with Constitution::

=) Just kidding.

Go for it, vote by your conscience and not party allegiance. It's too bad the rest of us get so caught up in what side we're on we almost always refuse to change sides.

Wait a second ... I voted for Erlich for Councilman ... he's a Republican ... the fuck?!

No Omega, what really is the case is that anyone who votes differently than you or has a different view on life and the priorities thereof is just big, hairy, stupid and dull-witted.

So much for the diversity of life. Pardon me whilst I go lobotomize myself to be able to think like Omega.

For anyone not "getting it" the above is sarcasm.

Omega, you might want to consider USC, we're chock full of rich conservative right-wing Christian bastards. But of course, you'd have to put up with all the liberal professors.

I'm going to ignore all the thoughtless drivel above.

"where do you plan on going to college?"

Lipscomb. Ole Miss and Oklahoma State are after me, but I'd prefer to stay at home, if possible, the better to eat my mom's cooking.

Just exactly what species of dinosaur ARE you?

I mean, everybody ELSE with more than a walnut-sized cerebral cortex already knows that Omega's and my beliefs are FAR from being similar enough to lump in a sentence like THAT one... or have we so soon forgotten the whole GOD thing? ("The God Thing"... that should be a movie title, don'cha think?)

Tora: make no mistake: I LOVE my job. I just don't get paid a fair wage for doing it, that's all. And that may change. And I gripe about it a lot, but I just do that to relieve tension. When I gripe, I'm okay. It's when I clam up that people should start worrying.

Why don't I do something else? To be honest, I've painted myself into a corner, jobwise. The best library jobs are in schools, but for me to get the student teaching credits I'd need, I'd have to quit my current job - and have NO money. And no job to come back to, should the teaching not pan out.

As for other jobs, I made those decisions when I was in college and high school. Truthfully, my major problem was that I was unfocused, lazy, and unambitious. Telling a kid at an early age "you can do anything" isn't always a motivator, especially when the kid hasn't a CLUE what he wants to do. (Actually, I wanted to be a palaeontologist, but I'd have had to go to Colorado for college, and there's about 5 job openings in that field in a DECADE.) I started off in engineering, but I hated math (I could do it, I just didn't like it) so I switched to English, because I've always liked books and reading and writing. I was going to write the Great American Novel (Fantasy or SF)... but then I realized it MIGHT be a good idea to be able to EAT while doing so. So I went to get a MS in Library/Information Science, because it was more books and reading and so on.

I still write, but not as much. Just when I'm really inspired. The Fantasy Epic is proceeding slowly... I can't figure out who to kill off at the end.
