Here's a theory: everything in the universe takes up a small amount of space, but a much larger amount of subspace. That theta radiation that the malon dump perhaps takes up a much mcuh mcuh much larger amount of subspace. The void was empty, hence the void's subspace was empty. Thus, there was alot of room for theta radiation there. However, in normal space, there are lots of stars and junk that take up pieces of subspace. So, overtime, the malon took up a little bit of space but alot of subspace with their theta radiation.
