I am making a list of all the options for what the next series could be about. These are ideas that I have read all over the Internet.

1. Another exploration series just like ST:TNG.
2. The voyages of the Enterprise-B.
3. The voyages of the Excelcior.
4. Flight Academy- who knows. Maybe the cadets are just reacurring characters and it is really about the professors.
5. A shipbuilding facility- we would get to see knew ships built.
6. A starbase.
7. If Picard really does die in the next movie, maybe the rest of the crew could do a series. I would be cheaper without Picard.
8. A series from the viewpoint of another race.

What do you think Berman will come up with. I have heard the series could be out Fall 2000, but most likely Fall 2001, but maybe even Fall 2002.

Derek Wry posted August 11, 1999 on the TrekWeb Message Board that the new series IS in fact going to be a "Starfleet Academy" show (only it will be called something different) and will begin next season [in the year 2000] for a one year overlap with Voyager.

A few hours after this post, Dangermouse, well-known internet spoiler provider, posted the following to the alt.tv.star-trek.voyager newsgroup:

I find this difficult to believe, considering the number of times Rick Berman has said "no it will never happen", but according to the memos floating around there will be an Academy series running alongside Voyager season 7 (though it won't be called Starfleet Academy)... However, given the amount of deliberate, leak-hunting misinformation put about from the office, I'd believe this when I see it.

Do with it what you want. I agree with Dangermouse, I only believe it when I see it.

I'd like to see your #5, with lots of new ships or a special taskforce with multiple ships (Defiant and Prometheus class preferred).

Aye, that's what Braga said. The reaction to the rumor was bad enough. I don't think they'll try a series based around the academy.

Just an idea I had. How about something involving a small group of ships on a long range exploration mission (Gamma Q.?)? They could split up and explore a large area of space, and meet up occasionally. You could concentrate on one crew one week, and another the next, or just the crew of the vessel to which Starfleet gave superiority, with recurring characters onboard the other ships. Similar to Voyager, in that they're a long way from home, and must solve problems on their own, but they can still get back relatively quickly, and aren't totally alone.

I don't know...

People seem to like starships. But assuming the show starts within a year or two, it seems too soon to have another Enterprise. And frankly two starship shows at the same time would be quite dull, in my opinion.

Personally, I'd like to see one of two things. If there must be a series created immediately, let's stick to the 24th century Alpha Quadrant. There's still stuff to see and do there. However, if they're willing to wait, I'd like to see something...different. No, I'm not sure what.

If you have a series like DS9 (continuing stories, in a new -- but familiar -- part of space), there's stuff to do. If it's a TNG-like series, the horse has been significantly flogged indeed.

I still say a 24th century Indiana Jones would be the best way to go. Ditch the Starfleet, I am higher than thou, and let us again see the more exotic part of the galaxy. Of course Starfleet principles and beliefs would always be present in our heroes mind, but unlike Starfleet officers he would have the ability to bend to rules far more.

I really think they should hold out on another series at least until Voyager has ended. It would be even better if they waited a year or so afterward. The franchise seems exhausted at the moment and needs time to catch its breath.

The Starfleet Academy idea is a disaster waiting to happen. I don't want to see Trek die...

I like bears idea. I'd be quite interesting to see more of the interior life of the Federation. But I'm not sure it would stay interesting for several seasons. I still hope for a series based in the alpha quadrant in the year 2410. The first let's say 10 episodes (or even the whole first season) would focus on the historical developments in the last 25 years. This would be challenging for the authors, and there are a lot of difficulties, but I think the new series must start with something new to give trek a serios boost. IMO the fifth series need to go completely new ways. Another starship show based in the same timeframe as voy and ds9 is quite negligible.

Why does all of this sound so much like the discussion everyone was having when they were trying to think of ways to keep B5 afloat? They came up with crusade, which is pretty much every idea I've seen here but with simply established backstory. I've only seen a few episodes but I understand it pretty much blows in comparison to the original series. Nothing really new to it, only the aforementioned back story. Why bother?

I'd like to see some ship off in some far flung corner of the Federation, all alone out there, since Starfleet is stretched thin from the war. They'd be in friendly space, yet still alone, with the nearest help being a few days away. There would be some small Federation colonies in that area, colonies who are a bit peeved that they only have one ship nearby, since one ship isn't enough to stop the local pirates.

And one thing I want to see is a ship that isn't top of the line. An Excelsior, or a Nebula maybe. I don't want to see some new ship. Let's stick with what we got.

A few thoughts:

1. Another exploration series just like ST:TNG.
This is always an option. If TPTB don't want experiments, they could return to a TNG-like series. I doubt that it will be an intentional clone of TNG, however, the new series might incorporate some of its elements (as does Voyager).

2. The voyages of the Enterprise-B.
Improbable. The ship and Captain "Tuesday" Harriman were not given a good start. Also DS9 and Voyager show there is no necessity to have a ship named "Enterprise". Why pick the E-B, if there are thousands of other ships?

3. The voyages of the Excelcior.
The best possible setting for a series situated in the past. Although I like the idea in essence, there is always the problem that a "retro-look" series has fewer possibilities of designing props, ships and such and fewer chances to develop. The writers and producers wouldn't like this restriction.

4. Flight Academy- who knows. Maybe the cadets are just reacurring characters and it is really about the professors.
I don't want to see it and I hope Braga is right. I wonder if anyone supports the "Flight Academy" idea.

5. A shipbuilding facility- we would get to see knew ships built.
Ships, ships, ships in every episode. While it would never get boring for me, I wonder if this applies to the normal viewers likewise. Not enough room for plot variety, unfortunately.

6. A starbase.
One of my favorites. There's a lot going on in a huge facility like a starbase, much more than in an outpost like DS9. Humans, aliens, criminals, sickbay, research, ships, such a series could combine everything people like about Star Trek.

7. If Picard really does die in the next movie, maybe the rest of the crew could do a series. I would be cheaper without Picard.
Captain Riker. Not bad. I hope Picard won't die, though. Nevertheless, I doubt the old crew will be revived. Brent Spiner doesn't want to play an aging Data, and the other characters are not getting younger either. I fear the time of TNG is over.

8. A series from the viewpoint of another race.
Interesting. It could be the Klingons. I think there would be still enough left to identify such a series as "Star Trek".

9. (supplemental) A series in the 29th century with lots of time travel
No I don't want to see it. Star Trek is about a certain era. I don't think a series with a vastly advanced Starfleet would be credible. I doubt that designers and writers can outline all the advances up to the 29th century now that we are familiar with the 24th century. Moreover there would be no return, once the 29th century has been established.

10. (supplemental) A series about the early day of Starfleet
There are lots of problems with the "retro-look". It's not as easy as in "Trials and Tribble-ations" where everything old was just reused. For instance, how can a tricorder look even older than the TOS version? We should leave the 22nd century to our imagination.

I really don't think I could handle a whole series of Klingons. They have their episodes, but a whole series? Ughh... me hopes not. (The honour trilogy! "Blood and Honour, Parts, I, II, and III", "Honour Until Death, Parts I, II, III, and IV", and the conclusion, "To Live with Honour, Parts, I, II, and III". I'm psyched already.)

I wouldn't probably like an all Klingon series, either. Some Klingon main characters, however, could give a lot of insight into their culture besides the usual "ritual of the week". What I have in mind specifically is some Klingon-Romulan-Federation plot with a mixed-race starship travelling through the Beta Quadrant.

I think something along the idea of New Frontier could be nice, though: patrolling and bringing order and aide to an area in chaos. Not that I'm saying that I'd want New Frontier to be a series. I wouldn't want that at all, but it's a very nice idea.

Five year break. Please!!!!

I would not watch another star base, based show. I think I would get bored quickly with a ship building show as well.

Exploration is about the only real option for them. Anything based around a base will come off like a copy of DS9. Anything else will be compared to TOS, and TNG. But it would have a better chance of surviving. BUT, if they don't take a break at this point, nothing is going to work. To many series on for to many years.

A break for the break demands, please. I want Trek, and even if the new show is going to be either boring or sloppy, I want it now (or in 2000 or 2001) and not wait for it five years.

They need to wait until Voyager ends. It is illogical to have two series at the same time. They should focus all of their energy into making one current show the best it can be.

Yes. One at a time. Ultimately, DS9 was the series that got hurt the most, never have trek fans to it's self.

A few years into the future:

The fallout from the Dominion War is still in effect. Their former allies, including the Breen, are still causing trouble. Unable to defray the huge cost of the War, one of the major powers (Romulan or Klingon Empire) has virtually collapsed. (This might work best for the Romulans, since on one hand you have the ReUnification movement, and the other the Tal Shiar, and they could all be struggling for dominance.)

The setting is a mixed-crew vessel on a Federation-led exploratory mission on the far side of Romulan territory, where the Romulans know more than they're telling. New races, upstart worlds previously held by the Romulans, pirates and rogues, Romulan intrigue, inroads by some of the Klingons, and the still-present threat from the Borg. (And, perhaps in a carryover from TNG's "The Neutral Zone" an explanation of "Greater concerns caused our absence." - A Rival Federation? Perhaps, one without a Prime Directive?)

I think a Starfleet Academy would do well, along with the last season of ST:Voy. Voyager would make it home (they have to make it home sometime) and they could meet up with some main characters from the new series. The new series could be focused around professors and high ranking Admirals, even the President of the Federation. Maybe the producers could slip in some conspiracy in the high ranks of the Federation, and then maybe the entire Federation could collapse because the chain of command has been lost!! HAHAHAHA!!! *Oops. Too many Skittles!*

I also HEARD from the TV Guide Channel (other people probably have seen this too) that the actor who plays Hercules was interested in a role in the next Star Trek series. Personally, I could not imagine him being an Ensign, or a Captain. (*Is not saying this is true*)

Kevin Sorbo is NOT connected to any Star Trek project. He is going to be part of an upcoming series being developed from one of Gene Roddenberry's ideas, ala Earth: Final Conflict.

I like fist of Two's idea for a series. It's the last post on the first page of this thread, if you haven't seen it.

Elim, you're scaring me.

Anyway, I like First of Two's idea of a mixed-race ship. The Romulan-Klingon stuff has so much potential that an "alien-of-the-week" is not required. And the most important thing is that the producers won't create a risky setting that might not be accepted by the fans. This could be detrimental to Trek's popularity once there is only one series. See the permanent picking at Voyager which has even become a "Trek break" discussion after the end of DS9.

What if they created a series, where the Federation made first contact with another race (similar to when the Vulcan's made first contact with Earth), and the Federation shared ALOT of technology with the new race, bringing them into the future very quickly. Then, the new race decides to form their own "Federation" and end up challenging the Federation for space. It would be a long conflict, like the Dominion war, and it could revolve around a ship, a starbase, or the Academy on Earth. Of course, in the end, the new "Federation" is either defeated (too much of repeating the Dominion war), becomes part of the Federation, or becomes closely allied with the Federation.

PPG S: The Prime Directive would not allow the Federation to give technology to a race that is low on the technology scale. The whole idea is for a race to develope at it's own rate. There are episodes where the PD has gone out the window, but not to that point. (Glad to see you have hung around)

Kosh: Hmm. Well, somehow the Prime Directive would have to be gotten around then. I know that in Insurrection, the Federation tried to hide themselves from the Ba'Ku because they thought they didn't have warp drive yet. Does the Prime Directive apply if the new race has already discovered warp drive and ships and the sort (just are still not that advanced)?
(Why? I've hung around for a while, I just could never post because I wasn't registered)

Warp drive is what makes the difference. When a race gets that far along, the Federation will make first contact, I think they will share medical technology at that point, I don't know about more.

Well that's what I meant when I said "where the Federation made first contact with another race (similar to when the Vulcan's made first contact with Earth)." The Vulcan's changed course because Earth had discovered warp drive.
