I had a disscussion with my friend, and we had a dissagreement with the meaning of canon.

If the word canon exist in the dictionary what would it say.

Also any other terms (ie. LUG, FF)

canon: a body of rules, principles, or standards accepted as axiomatic and universally binding, esp. in a field of study or art

As in canonizing popes and cardinals.

I've always heard canon refer to the rules and aspects of the world of a person's writing, as with the ecompassing saga of Star Trek.

The works of a writer that have been accepted as authentic: the entire Sherlock Holmes canon..

No, saints are canonized. Which fits the definition in that they're adding the saints to the official, canonical list of people who are saints.

Canon is basically "fact" for a series or collection of books, movies, tv series, comics, etc. The "actual events" of a fictious universe.
Star Trek, Star Wars both are heavily controversialized canon-wise because of the sheer volume of work made about their universes. In other words, it's tough to say what "did" happen and "didn't" between all the information.
TV/Movies are generally the highest in regard for official or real occurences. Scripts, guides, manuals, and the like are second followed by books then comics.
