This is the only place I can think to post this. My wife and I were watching that episode of Star Trek (TOS, by the way), and noticed something odd. Kirk's headstone for his grave said "James R. Kirk"Has anyone noticed that? We all know that he refers to himself as "James T. Kirk" and we know that T stands for Tiberius. But what's with the continuity error, or am I just being too picky? If you haven't seen it, see it for yourself. It really does say "R" ------------------ I looked at my son, and said, "My god, he's hung like a bear." One of the more famous errors. However, many people prefer to blame the guy who made the stone (within the context of the episode) rather than the people who made the episode. go figure.------------------ You're a Starfleet Officer. "Weird" is part of the job.

It's also possible that Kirk didn't like the name "Tiberius," and told everyone his middle name was Robert for a while. ------------------ "Still one thing more fellow-citizens--A wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. IIRC, "Where No Man..." was one of the first TOS episodes made with Kirk & Co, had they even established he was James T yet? ------------------ Star Trek Gamma Quadrant Average Rated 6.83 out of 10 Smileys by Fabrux *** "If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier ... just as long as I'm the dictator." - George "Dubya" Bush, Dec 18, 2000

Yeah, but I think they established the middle initial as "T" during the series sometime ------------------ Star Trek Gamma Quadrant Average Rated 6.83 out of 10 Smileys by Fabrux *** "If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier ... just as long as I'm the dictator." - George "Dubya" Bush, Dec 18, 2000

James Robert Kirk? James RUPERT Kirk, now that would be funny. Definitely not the sort of name you'd let your enemy know about.

There's an unofficial (but kind of neat) explanation for the "R" in the "Brother's Keeper" trilogy from Pocket books, "R" standing for a nickname in-joke between Kirk and Gary Mitchell from their Academy days.I forget just what the R stands for, though. ------------------ "Ed Gruberman, you fail to grasp Ty Kwan Leap. WNMHGB was the first episode w/ Kirk. That's why they hadn't come up w/ the 'T' yet. So, technically, 'R' was his originally established middle initial, and the 'T' was the continuity error. It just happens to be the one that stuck.------------------ My new year's resolution is the same as last year's: 1024x768.

I seem to remember that at that time, Gene actually DID have his name down as James Robert Kirk. He just forgot when it came to a later episode, or the writer wasn't nitpicky enough to have checked every frame of the pilot, and just used "T" because it sounded better.------------------ "And Mojo was hurt and I would have kissed his little boo boo but then I realized he was a BAD monkey so I KICKED HIM IN HIS FACE!" -Bubbles

Plus, I doubt that in Sisko and Torres' original character write-ups, they even had middle initials. They were most likely added a few years down the road. There is a reason that Eugene and Wesley have been reused. But the only man who knows why is Gene Wesley Roddenberry, so I doubt we'll ever know now. ------------------ "And Mojo was hurt and I would have kissed his little boo boo but then I realized he was a BAD monkey so I KICKED HIM IN HIS FACE!" -Bubbles

And the 'T' one is bullshit too. Riker got a 'T' initial in homage to Kirk.------------------ Luke Ford: "What's it like having a dick in your ass?" Zoe: "Imagine taking your bottom lip and pulling it over the top of your head. You get used to it but it does hurt."
