From "Who Mourns for Adonais?"Kirk: Mankind has no need for gods. We find the one quite adequate.

Now here's my question:Was Kirk (Roddenberry) being reverent - or did he really mean that we find the one MORE than adequate.

Wasn't Rodenberry extremely anti-God anyway?

Are you being sarcastic Jeff? Was he really anti-God/THAT anti-God? Is it even possible to be an atheist and agnostic at the same time? I now a lot of religious people that like Star Trek and if pressed would definetely argue that Trek was pro-religious (which I absolutely don't see).

Nope, you can't possibly be agnostic and athiestic at the same time. I'm the former. As an agnostic (one who has no knowledge of God/gods/afterlife and admits it freely), how could I also state categorically that there is no God? I just admited that I don't know.[Agnostic translates as intellectually honest + reasonably intelligent]

Kirk made a religious statement yes, though not anti-religion as such, but in regards to ancient polytheism - ie the pagan belief of multiple Gods. It was perfectly pertinent to the episode, but TOS was always prolific at making statements.

I was going to explain how I knew that but it would've been a red herring. But I swear - I knew that. but TOS was always prolific at making statements. Um...ya, 'prolific' is the right word.

All I meant was ... Whenever a fundie calls someone a liberal, they always seem to add "god-hating athiest" to the front of it. Lot of wierdos on the net. Even one here on Flare

I know it's easier to pronounce it 'ie' but it really is "atheist", guys.
