So... any progress at all?

Care to give a press-conference here?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

I'll leave the nice bit to Krenim. I'll just say that if more people were to get off their asses and offer to do something for the project, it'd get done a lot sooner. I'll be reminding you all of this when you rush to criticise the finished result. . .

UP3 is coming along, albeit very slowly. I'm in the process of firing those who have either vanished from the face of the earth or who simply haven't done any work. Those interested in replacing the fired should contact me. Those not interested in helping out have little right to complain.

What's involved? I'll write, but I don't do windows.

What is this "UP3"?

Posted by Michael_T (Member # 144) on :

Utopia Planitia 3 is a starship database the last time I checked. I'll help out and I've offered before but no one responded by e-mail before. Anyway, I'll write since I can't draw.

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Well, it's rather late here, but anyone interested in working on UP3 should send me a PM. I'll contact those who do so tomorrow sometime.

How would this UP3 database differ from, say, Bernd's EAS database or other ship databases?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

For one thing, pedigree. Utopia Planitia was one of the very first of its kind. These Forums are a descendant of what was merely an adjunct to UP. Most other databases actually copied (to the extent of layout and coding) UP's style.

You asked for it, man. I've sent you a PM long ago, and if now's the time, I'll do it again.

Sheesh... to think that I came here just to see what was going on with Utopia Planitia. [Razz]

I don't have an idea what it'll look like, but this sounds interesting. What exactly do you need? [Smile]

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

For the moment, I don't think we'll need anymore help. No less than five people have volunteered in the past 24 hours, and as long as they don't wind up being slackers like those that I've recently fired, we should be on track.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

What is the agreement people make when they do stuff for this? I always hear people saying "oh yeah, I did this one cool thing, but I can't show you 'cause it's for UP3..."

Why all the secrecy? How come you guys don't do previews like Bernd does with his in-development sections of Ex-Astris?

Just a thought. No disrespect intended.

I like doing stuff. I'd like to do stuff.

I can't do CGI, I can't write code, but if you need someone who can tell an interesting, detailed story, (say, in providing histories for fictional ships) and make up names for things (People, Planets, Starships) at the drop of a hat, I'm your man.

Other than that I'd be pretty much useless for this project, AFAIK.

We need authors...

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

And authors we have, CC. Five people have PMed me today alone, and there aren't that many classes left. It's diagramers that we need. Badly. Unfortunately, no one who's approached me is any good at them. [Frown]

I know it's not canon, but I could do some diagrams.

This was based on a scoutship the Malnurtered One had sketched. The graphic is small, but it was done in Illustrator and then brought into Photoshop, so it could, of course, be larger. PM me if you want me to send you a larger version. Please note that I claim no design credit/blame.

I've also done some CG. Still working on the textures for this one.

I also write, but it sounds like you've got that covered.

Well, BX, we're not having any previously copyrighted material on UP3, so all schematics have to be new ones. If, say, you wanted to use Photoshop or PSP to trace over, say, the Galaxy or Nebula or something, that's what we need. I've done 9 classes, and have totally burned out.

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Actually, I was the one that designed that, Bal...& thanks for reminding me. I have a crappy sketch of a bow elevation around here somewhere.

Hey, Balaam, would you mind if I did a write up on that? Not for UP3 or anything, just on my own?

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Actually, I would mind, OnToMars. I've already got hints & allegations towards it.

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

When I said, the Malnurtured One. I uh.... I mean the Malnurtured Shik? Ooops. Sorry, I'd allready taken the NyQuil when I posted. I won't edit the original post for the sake of thred continuity, but I should have said that the original design was by Shik, and that I have no claim on it, really (other than that I did the diagram). So yeah. Sorry, Shik. Lemme at that bow projection, maybe I can make it up to you...

So Vogoen Poet, is there a particular style you would prefer I emulate? Do you have an example I could use as a stylistic template? Can you be arsed with such things? Should I just freeball it and we'll figure out how to conform it to the ones you've allready done later?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

BX: Well, at present the basic format is, white lines on black, outlines at about 3 pixels, important features 2 pixels, others 3 pixels. If you have access to the UP3 Forum yet, I (or Krenim now he has all my contributions) will put up some examples for you to look at.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

freeball it? you DO know what freeballing is!?! LOL one guy at camp in year 9 decided to freeball it when we did abseiling - not a pretty site! LOL!

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

BX: If you're interested in doing diagrams for UP3, PM me.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Hm... My diagrams are mostly two-pixel-wide lines. One pixel for finer details. And no outline. I despise diagrams w/ überthick outlines. I don't know how came up w/ that idea, but they should be smacked. Painfully.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Indulge your kinks in your own time, Timothy. I prefer 3-pixels down to 1-pixel because it gives you the opportunity to differentiate between various types of detail.

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

We can dig it.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Yes, but will you draw it? 8)

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

So the picture I'm getting, or rather not getting is that you're just not going to give me a template from which to base anything I do off of. OK. I guess I'll just work something up on my own and then you can tell me everything thats wrong with it afterwards. [Smile]

Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :

Check your PMs, BX. I explain the whole example thing there.

Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :

send me a PM maybe i can contribute something?

Jesus. UP and UP2 was out about 4 years ago. It makes no sense to keep people in so much secrecy. Seriously I mean why don't you just up what you have now and post new updates when something is done like normal websites?

If every website was like that imagine how many there will be. First it would a good thing to have a few websites fully done. But after what a month of looking at it, you are done and bored with it. Think about it, you done everything on it that needed to be done, so when those regulars realize that will not update the site because there is no point in being there after you are done reading it.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Okay, two things:

1.) I agree totally with him. Let's see what there is to see.
2.) Does he get to keep that sig? [Frown]

There are no plans to wait until everything is done before going online. However, the plan is to have a certain amount done. And we haven't even managed to do that.

It is kind of sad when you go to a site and the main menus look fantastic, and it looks like it's gonna have all the content you can ply your eyeballs to, and then the whole thing's an empty frame and everything's under construction. Waitaminute that sounds like my site! Gotta go...
