I just KNOW they are going to
1. Fuck up continuity
2. Make a rehash show
3. Lack originality
4. Change the premise each season - with a MAJOR change around season four just to drag in more viewers
5. Have little or no characterisation
6. Try and make it more action orientated.
7. Won't take risks
8. Be eye-candy instead of brain-candy
9. Ignore they're fans - and I'm talking about their new fans for their own show.
10. Try and ignore Trek
11. say (especially Rick Berman) "this is the closest trek has come to the original series" - oh hang on - he's already said that.
12. Do a lot of 'fan boy' shit - case and point Klingons.
13. Not have smooth head klingons.
14. Have one word titles
15. Be simplistic and trite and treat the audience like children.

As opposed to TNG's wonderful method of having an assload of episodes start with "The?"
Any writer knows the shorter & more descriptive the title, the better.

About the smooth forehead issue, hasn't it been established exactly what the story was? All I remember hearing about it was Worf saying "That is a Klingon matter". The conclusion I drew was that the Klingons cosmetically concealed their appearance in order to get some kind of advantage over the Federation. But this rumour that they'll be in the first ep of the new series, sporting their proper forehead attire screws that theory up because they supposedly crash land on Earth and wouldn't have a chance to alter themselves.
Maybe they could explain it by saying there was some kind of virus that caused the smooth foreheads?

Its also got nothing to do with being one word - or having a 'the' in front. look at "The Changeling" - there is a mythological reference there - a changeling was a baby that was stolen by faeries or something along those lines. Look at what Nomad was...
And the Cage... Not only was Pike put in a Cage... he was and so was the girl - Caged in their minds by the Talosians. The Talosians were in their own Cage by not being able to be incontact with any other races/not able to build anything themselves etc.
Then look at "The Disease" from Voyager... I mean it just described that Harry get's this disease from this alien Chick! SHEESH!
or Basics... not BAD for Voyager but when you think about it, there is no depth - the crew didn't have Voyager - they were stranded they were back to Basics.
Then think about something like "For the World is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky" or "The Visitor" (Melanie and Ben and Jake Ahhhhhh) or "Inter Arna Enim Silent Leges" SP?? Or even "Unnatural Selection" or "DUET"!!!!!!
Hello Voyager with - "The Cloud" ugh.

I prefer titles like "All Good Things..." and "The Way of the Warrior" over "Drone" or "Endgame" - Look at Moore's story "The Barge of the Dead" - it evokes a sense of wonder - and you want to see what this episode is about.
It's annoyed me with the Trek films... "The Wrath Of Kahn" and "The Search For Spock" and "The Undiscovered Country" are way better than "Generations" "The Motion Picture" and "Insurrection".

Look, again - I'm not basing an episode's quality on the episode's name - I'm talking about the thoughtfulness, the creativeness, the memorability (is that a word) of the episode titles. "Let He Who Has Sinned" is a great - thought provoking title for an episode compared to "Drone" but one is better than the other (as a whole)...
"Looking for Par'Mach in all the Wrong Places"
"Paper Moon"
"Once More Unto the Breach"
"The Sacrifice of Angels"
"Visionary"
They're pretty good... and they all have multiple connotations. What does "The Cloud" have.
Yes, you're right - episode names help you keep track of the... episodes!!!!! It doesn't help when all the episode names sound similar and aren't very thought provoking.
And what about in TNG, weren't there some samish episode titles?? Code of Honour... A matter of Honour?? What WAS that episode where Riker serves aboard the Klingon ship called? What was the episode where Yar has to battle Yuta??

Remember how I mentioned about a Star Trek TOS Season 1 marathon over Easter - that was so cool... I had seen Conscience of the King Before - and was pretty board by it - that was like 5 years ago. When I saw it over Easter - and after watching about 10 previous episodes - you get into the feel of Trek (I had only caught TOS sporadically before hand) - and you realise what a FUCKING awesome episode that it was. The whole scene with the Daughter and the Father and her going completely nuts... it was... Shakespearean indeed.

I was captivated (mon said that only it and Walter Cronkite could hold an.8 year-ol's attention span for more than 15 minutes).
As I grew up - high school, college), I never tired of it. Ask any of the original Trekkie generation (those of us still around). 3 years of episodes (some stinkers), and there was enough sense of wonder and excitement to keep Trek fandom alive for decades.
I think that says something about the writing quality compared to anything which has come since. And yes, I do watch all of the other series and movies - some with a sense of awe, some with interest, and some just to keep up on "current events".
BTW: Every old TOS fan knows why Klingons now have bumpy foreheads. Kirk kicked them in the ass so hard, their backbones were shoved up and over the top of their skulls - becoming frontbones.
------------------
Faster than light - no left or right.
I too am a paleo-TOS fan. I vividly remember watching Trek in color in the 1960s after my parents bought our first color set to see the Mexico City Olympics and the space program. I forced my parents to drive me to Minneapolis to see a Trek slide show given by DC Fontana when I was about 10 years old. I dressed as Spock for Halloween several times. I've been drawing starships ever since.
For those of you who were introduced to Trek through later incarnations may find it hard to understand what an amazing thing Star Trek was when it first came on. It was epic, colorful, adventurous, idealistic, romantic, and very innovative, unlike anything we had ever seen on TV or the movies. It wasn't just the techology, which was, of course, very cool for the time. I can't say that I completely understood the depth of the stories, but I was definitely hooked. I wish you all had the chance to see Star Trek as I first saw it in 1967.
I think the overall quality of the 78 TOS episodes would have been enough to sustain 35 years of fandom, perhaps even without the subsequent movies and series. I don't want to sound like an arrogant old TOS-head geezer (too late!), but I still compare every new show to TOS, to see if it gives me that same charge. Would Star Trek be still be going on if the first show had been Voyager, TNG, or DS9? Who knows? That question is probably impossible to answer since everything that came after was built on the foundation laid by TOS. But TOS certainly left an enormous impression on those who saw it when they were young. Do kids today wish they were Capt. Janeway or Sisko. Do girls fall in love with Tuvok or Chakotay?

After that I was totally hooked. Even though I was still in high school I would stay up till midnight just so I could watch it. I never missed an episode from that time on. My love of Voyager led to an interest in DS9 which only grew through the years (I think the 6th season of DS9 had some of the best episodes ever), and also the Next Generation and the Original Series.
Voyager introduced me to it so I think it will always remain my favourite but now I have an appreciation for all things Trek.
As for being in love with Chakotay or Tuvok, maybe not, I was (and sometimes am) in love with Tom Paris instead

Yes, the disease in question being romantic infatuation. It's one of those things that can be taken two different ways, and thus a half-way creative title, though attached to an utterly crappy ep.
I like the titles on "Andromeda". They're almost always taken from old, little-known poems. "It's Hour Come 'Round at Last," "Under the Night," "An Affirming Flame." 'Course, then you have "Fear and Loathing in the Milky Way"...

I don't know why people are so bothered by the fact that the Klingons in TOS had smooth human like foreheads and now they have much larger foreheads [with ridges etc etc].
I mean one of the main reasons I'm sure is the fact that the show didn't have so much money to spend on makeup etc back then where as now they can afford more. So they look different - so what?
If that bothers you, then shouldn't the fact that the Trills in TNG looked so much different to the ones in DS9 bother you too? But no one ever mentions it. Always with the Klingons! For that matter the Bajorans looked a little different in the early days too.
I think if anything should irritate people it should be those races[not the Klingons from TOS]. At least they had their budget as an excuse, as for the other races I can see no real acceptable reason.
On a similar matter, does anyone remember a little case of Klingons having pink [or purple if you will] blood for about 1 movie?
Hmmm. I've just learnt to accept these things. Sometimes I think the writers have no idea.
Anyway! Thats my piece. Agree or disagree. Thats up to you

IRA STEPHEN BEHR is sitting behind a desk. On the couch to the left are RENE ECHEVARRIA and RON MOORE. We join them mid-conversation
BEHR
...But honestly people, we need suggestions.
MOORE
Let's be serious though, Ira, how urgent could the situation be, anyway?
BEHR
Well, Rick says the suits are incensed. (a beat) We're losing Nielsons, guys. The budget for the season finale may be taking a hit...
ECHEVARRIA
Ouch.
MOORE
What sort of numbers are we dealing with?
BEHR
They're pulling in 1.7s.
Moore whistles softly.
MOORE
They've closed within 60% of our ratings already?
BEHR
I know. Scary, huh?
ECHEVARRIA
I'll say. (a beat.) Well, I'm open to suggestions for tweaking my scripts. Maybe we could just hold off for a couple of days and try to flesh them out a bit more?
MOORE
More Klingons? I mean, I could rewrite my current script to feature Klingons swooping in a screaming "get the hell off our planet!"
BEHR
The Risa one?
MOORE
Yeah.
BEHR
I say leave it alone. It's working as-is.
Echevarria nods.
MOORE
What are you leaning towards, Ira?
BEHR
Well, perhaps we should ask ourselves what they've got that we haven't got...
ECHEVARRIA
Koenig.
Behr shakes his head.
BEHR
I've asked. He says he won't do Chekov.
ECHEVARRIA
Then what about a new role? Like, the head of some elite Federation black ops program or something. Something sinister.
MOORE
I like the sound of that... We could call it... Section 28? Something nasty like that.
BEHR
I think we're missing the point. I mean, look who we're up against. He's... well, he's...
ECHEVARRIA
A poet.
BEHR
Exactly.
MOORE (chiming in)
Yeah. He contributed to a compendium of haikus with George Lucas and Chris Carter. Damn, those guys are good.
ECHEVARRIA (resolutely)
It's what we're up against. We've gotta rise to the occasion.
BEHR
Well, um, let's take one of the cast... say, O'Brien, and posess him with an alien virus... and force him to write poetry in his quarters all day and all night...
MOORE (interrupting)
...It could be like an alien legacy story... It could be their Beowulf, their Homer... and the race could be extinct, and the virus could be their little way of ensuring that their cultural history survives...
ECHEVARRIA (interrupting)
The Inner Light, Ron
Moore isn't paying attention
MOORE (continuing)
...But meanwhile, the virus is driving O'Brien insane... and he's about to die... And Bashir finds out a way to remove the virus from his friend's system but is split between doing that and saving O'Brien's life or risking it and seeing whether O'Brien can finish the story.
BEHR
Throw in a B-plot about Worf wanting to adopt a puppy and we might have enough for a two-parter. (a beat.) It might do it. This could be big.
ECHEVARRIA
We could call up the UPN marketing people Voyager uses and make sure we get a real kick-ass promo for it.
BEHR
But...
MOORE (incredulous)
But?
BEHR
...well, the best we could hope for having it ready by would be May Sweeps. We need to implement something now or else there mightn't BE a show by May Sweeps.
The gravity of what he has just said sinks in on the other two. There's a long pasuse, and Echevarria looks up.
ECHEVARRIA
Titles.
BEHR (sternly)
We've been over the entire thing about the drum backbeat before. It's staying.
ECHEVARRIA
No, not the opening credits... episode titles.
MOORE (catching on.)
Theirs kick our ass. I mean, "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars." That's sends shivers down my spine.
Echevarria nods in agreement.
BEHR
Remember when we fought over whether to name it "The Jem'Hadar" or "Dominion"... perhaps we should have gone with something longer. Like...
MOORE
"Let He Who is Without Sin"
BEHR
I like that. From the Bible, right?
MOORE
Yeah... I mean, like, Eris is without sin, but Quark isn't... and Jake and Nog are like the brothers of Simon Peter.
ECHEVARRIA
Well, no use arguing about an epsiode who aired years ago.
BEHR
True enough. But what do you guys say we go all out and put poetic titles on everything? Maybe that'll stop him from stealing any more than a quarter-percent or so more of our audience.
ECHEVARRIA (excitedly)
That might do it...
MOORE
Well, let's start with my Risa episode.
BEHR
I dunno... How about "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges?"
ECHEVARRIA
No... just doesn't fit the material. How about we save it for later? (a beat.) That biblical one was kinda cool though, Ron...
MOORE
Then "Let He Is Who Without Sin" it is...

Homer: I'm gonna miss Springfield. This town's been awfully good to us.
Bart: No, it hasn't, Dad. That's why we're leaving.
Homer: Oh, yeah. [pokes his head out the window] So long, Stinktown!

Thank goodness. As soon as I heard about the series being placed before TOS I started to wonder how many episodes or how many minutes into the pilot it would be before the first red shirt would die.
The Man Trap - A Bloodsucking Monster on Planet M-113
Charlie X - A Boy from the Planet Tharsus
The Enemy Within - Two Kirks
Dagger of the Mind - The Lunatic from Devil's Island
Miri - 400 year old girl
The Devil in the Dark - Horta: The Underground Monster
The Changeling - Secret of Nomad, Ultra-Small Spaceship
And my favorite:
The Paradise Syndrome - Coming Close to Crash Course with an Asteroid
As for the uniforms, I'd like to see them really break with the ST past. How about some good, old-fashioned buttons and visible zippers? Nothing wrong with them, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Or as Dorothy might say, "buttons and zippers and snaps, oh my!"

Sources? I know about pockets, going back to the field jackets of TWoK. But while zippers were always used in the uniforms, they were always concealed to look like something futuristic. And I've never seen buttons. They used snaps, too, in the classic TWoK uniforms, but they felt the need to camouflage them with silver braid for when the jacket flaps were left open.
I want to see the real, unembellished fasteners. Again, if it still works, why not use them? What would be the advantage of some high-tech 22rd century fastener over a plain zipper? Airtightness, maybe, but that wouldn't help with a shipboard jumpsuit.
To be fair about JMS, when his titles were good, they were good "Deconstruction of Falling Stars, Falling towards Apothesis" etc. But, by season 5, we'd gotten to the point where he'd run out of variations on "light" and "dark" and "war". I'd have trouble putting season 5 titles to episodes. Actually, I'd have slight trouble doing that to some season 4 episodes, but that is probably due to the fact that by late season 4, there were rarely individual episode stories. Still, season 5 titles were largely "The darkness in the shadows with war at night".
I do agree with faux-Echevarria about one thing. I couldn't stand that drum-beat.
