Has anyone got a chance to see the Suliban? They look like TOS aliens. I'm not saying they ripped off anything except T'Pol's clothing. I'm saying it doesn't look like a lot of money went into it.

I only saw the one picture, but I'm amicable to their look. What I don't like is Phlox's appearance. For somebody who's supposed to be a super mysterious alien, he doesn't look nearly alien enough. His would work well for alien-of-the-week. But they should have tried a little harder for a more interesting look. I had always pictured something along the lines of the plant lady from Farscape. Oh well.

I'm in agreement with Stingray on this. The makeup I've seen for the Suliban is certainly a nice effect. Dashs of gold, orange, and silver with a cool shimmery and glittery effect. Seems like this species has a fairly plain base to start with for it's limited shapeshifting abilities.
As for Dr. Phlox, yeah, the makeup is bit disappointing. I like it and think it's interesting, but it is fairly derivative of other alien makeup effects. It looks like the overall design was a combination of a picture of Gul Dukat with Genghis Khan.

Hmmm, I'm equally stumped. But I bet you spelled Kahn as in superman starship stealer "KAAAAAAAHHHHHNNNNNNN!" and that the Mongol is somehow spelled differently.

Nope, it's not my spelling. I checked my dictionary. It's spelt "Khan." Just like Khan Nooni*n Singh and Chaka Khan.
Going to my VH-1 Pop-Up Video trivia... "khan" means "head." And, according to the blurb on the Chaka Khan video, about 20% of American men report not getting "khan."

Um, no they don't. The makeup & prosthetics for the Suliban, although IMHO not anything special by today's standards, beats anything TOS came up with by leaps & bounds.

I too was disapointed with Dr Phlox I thought the make up was bit more elaborate. Something along the lines of Rigel and Pilot or any other Muppet creation of Farscape. The M-113 monster was more creative than Phlox and the Suliban.

But I suppose with Dr Phlox being a regular, main cast member they are perhaps limited in how complex and elaborate the makeup is. That's in respects to mainly time if he's going to be in every show, as well as reasonable comfort for the actor.

Just in case I did confuse anyone, in my original post it should read that I like the Suliban makeup but am so-so on Phlox. Of course, for the reasons Red Admiral stated, the makeup on the major characters can't really be all that great. Too many facial protusions and stuff can also limit the actor's ability to convey emotion through facial expressions and body language (although this is not always the case). On minor characters, it's not that real important since they only pop up once and a while and don't go through much character development. Major characters and frequently recurring characters need it.

Actuaully there have been many break throughs in make up that with elaborate make up emotion can still be shown. As with many aspects of Enterprise not alot of effort was shown.

Excuse me? Many aspects? What the hell are you talking about? A lot of effort was put into this show. Some people (not me, others) say that not a lot of effort was put into the ship. Fine by me. But what else that we know of so far has had barely any effort put into it?

Indeed, it seems that more effort has been put into this show than into any other aspect of Trek, ever, including the movies. Or perhaps TMP got a little more effort. At least it had a more prolonged and painful birth.
Just about everything about ENT is new, and somebody coughed up an exceptionally big lump of dough to come up with all the detailed standing sets and expansive one-episode sets. Recurring characters are already being written in, sets exist for things that aren't shown in the earliest episodes, and there is obviously some sort of background research going on all the way back to TOS (something that never really happened after TMP).

I agree. Whether we all agree with the outcome, I don't think anyone can deny that Enterprise is the most pre-planned and certainly the most costly Star Trek attempt yet. What's the budget for "Broken Bow," again?

Yes, I totally agree. Phlox' appearance is disapointing. They should have give him at least an alien colour, like Stingray said. I was definatly expecting something along the lines of TAS' Lt' Arex: a strange barely humanoid creature with a silly voice.

I read that in the Planet of the Apes remake, that despite having quite alot of make up and plastics on there face, the actors were able to express emotion quite well.
Just a little tid bit that is quite unhelpful
