It's the Sydney Class without the warp engines and turned upside down. It's been used as several transports over the years, but I don't think it has a class name (at least not one that's been given).------------------ "The sons of the Prophet were valiant and bold, And quite unacustomed to fear. It's not turned upside-down. It was always liked that. The Sydney was modified in the same orientation. Only when the Sydney began to appear on DS9 was it ever flipped upside-down for filming. But nothing else was ever modified on/to the model.------------------ [Bart's looking for his dog.] Groundskeeper Willy: Yeah, I bought your mutt - and I 'ate 'im! Groundskeeper Willy: Aye. I also 'ate the mess he left on me rug. [Bart stares.] Ya heard me!

One wonders if several physical models exist of this design. We see the "exec shuttle" version both in ST6 and in "Generations", while the Sydney class model was modified/constructed for TNG "Relics" and a piece of stock footage of it docking upside down was filmed for DS9 "Playing God". So did Jein modify the shuttle into the transport, and then back?It seems highly unlikely that the model would have been modified twice. Jein probably simply saved the molds he used for the exec shuttle, and used them to make the hull for the Jenolan, retaining the exec shuttle in unmodified condition and simply repainting it for "Generations". Maybe the reused the mould (or whatever you call that)made some modefications and they had the Sydney class. How big is the model of the Sydney-class anyway? Because they could have easily used the Enterprise-A engines from the AMT/Ertl Model-kit.------------------ Visit Seventhworld, with its new Sci-Fi project FALLENWALLS www.seventhworld.de And of course my own StarTrek Series Project www.stnemesis.de Just a preview...

You know, the model in Generations actually looks to be CGI to me. Is it possible that is what it really was?------------------ "No, 3 & 6 are mandatory, so you only have to do them if you want" Alex, fellow classmate, trying to explain an assignment (2/2/01)

I thought that the scene with all the shuttles and the people on the saucer was CGI...------------------ "Oh for fuck's sake, stop your moaning, If you fancy a threesome at this time of night, you can't get start getting choosey about which particular three! -Queer As Folk, UK

Well, the actual saucer was a Matte, right?------------------ "Instructed by history and reflection, Julian was persuaded that, if the diseases of the body may sometimes be cured by salutary violence, neither steel nor fire can eradicate the erroneous opinions of the mind." -Edward Gibbons, The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire.

The saucer was definitely a matte, and the small shuttle settling down on it probably was a CGI effect because something that small would not be practical with models. But it's difficult to tell anything definite about the exec-shuttle, which was seen fairly close at first and did not seem to have the sort of early-CGI surface glare the CG version of the E-B had in the beginning. Could have been CG, could have been a model.Timo Saloniemi

Just a little note: The windows are alot different between the Jenolen and the shuttle, too. The Jenolen is obviously alot bigger. Don't know how this fits in to the whole modification debate, but, to me anyway, it points to two separate models.------------------ "The sons of the Prophet were valiant and bold, And quite unacustomed to fear. Quite so - if the shuttle model was used as the basis for the Jenol*n model, then Jein did an expert job at removing all traces of the big side windows and doorway. The forward windows would have been easier to mask, since the entire bow was so greatly modified, but the smoothness of the Jenol*n sides suggests that they never had those big oval portholes and doorways cut into them.Timo Saloniemi

I looked in issue 61 of Cinefex, which has an article on Generations. They make no mention of CGI for the small shuttles, but do say that the executive shuttle was shot motion control. The Enterprise hull was a matte painting (actually two matte paintings: one flat and one with glinty highlights). The crew were ILM staffers comped in. I think extensive CGI didn't come in until First Contact (Akira, et al) and Insurrection (Enterprise)------------------ When you're in the Sol system, come visit the Starfleet Museum

The hybrid Type-6/TOS movies shuttle was a model, there are pictures of it on Bernd's site, in the Starship gallery.------------------ "Instructed by history and reflection, Julian was persuaded that, if the diseases of the body may sometimes be cured by salutary violence, neither steel nor fire can eradicate the erroneous opinions of the mind." -Edward Gibbons, The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire.

Maybe the shuttles were also a matte painting. And I was just at Ex Astris Scientia and saw a pic of the underside of the shuttle. Are those engines of the Enterprise-D or something similar? ------------------ "Oh for fuck's sake, stop your moaning, If you fancy a threesome at this time of night, you can't get start getting choosey about which particular three! -Queer As Folk, UK [This message has been edited by Michael_T (edited March 20, 2001).]

I thought one was landing on the saucer. I can remember one of those flying towards the saucer.------------------ Terry: "Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, ...." Max: "And?" Terry: "I forgot." The Fact Files explicitly call both the shuttle and the fully-fledged starship "Sydney class", but of course that's rubbish. I don't think that whoever built the shuttle conceived a class name for it. If there is an official designation, it should be something like "Type-26 orbital shuttle".------------------ "Species 5618, human.
