Okay, (by the way I've been away for a while) so now the chapter has ended, the book closed. But, being the knitpickers we all are, we just have to identify the vessels seen in "What You Leave Behind".

When I think about it, it seems foolish to even look into the ship names and registries. The writers/producers/whatevers surely weren't paying attention to the technical side of things. Their main focus was on the emotional effect.

Speaking of the emotional effect, this really "got me where I lived". Now, twenty-three minutes past the final chapter, I have a weird feeling inside of me. I have learned so much from the show, and now part of me has been left behind, only to let a new chapter open. We'll see what comes next.

So...let's get crackin'!

Well really there wern't any new ships in WYLB. The entire battle was stock footage. I mean c'mon, the Sao Paulo had USS Defiant NX-74205 on the hull.

Very little of the battle was stock footage. They just didn't change the Defiant's texture map.

Perhaps not, but I don't appreciate the use of stock footage in the last episode either.

OK... let's start with the "edities" (the modified stock footage)

In the same shot where the Defiant (with the NX-74205 reg.) does that little bank turn over a Galor and head for the back lines, on the far right of the screen we spot the back of a newly-added darkened Federation starsip, with a vertical impulse grill. I have a feeling it's *gasp* a Norway.... There's some more ships in this shot as well.. a Galaxy IIRC.

Additionally...

And extra attack fighter was added into the attack run on the Galor and gets sorta cleaved.

We see some warbirds added into a lot of the shots.

There is the shot of a Miranda Class starship being chased by a Breen starship. BTW, this is my favorite VFX shot of the episode.

Were any ship names in WYLB.

I know that there was a lot of stock footage in WYLB. That wasn't the original question. I asked if there were some, if any registires given by the production staff.

Some new shots were the first battle scene with the Excelsior class ship getting it's bridge fried. Then we had the two new Nebula Class ships, and the scene Trinculo mentioned, along with the shot of the the Galaxy firing phasers from the strips.

That gives us at least five new ships. Perhaps not necessarily new ships, but some never seem before. If Paramount didn't release any names or registries, then who cares.

They mentioned Attack Wings 64 and 65 as well as the Romulan flagship, but I don't recall any names.

I'm with Frank; what's reused isn't that important (and isn't a whole lot compared to the new and edited stuff), but the least they could do is change the Defiant's registry on the texture map.

*sniggers* I'm sure Stipes would be more than willing to provide us with names.

Maybe we could convince him that, if he gives us the names, we won't kill him for not changing the São Paulo's textures... :-)

It's not the So Paulo, though. It's the Defiant.

Yes, the name's the same, but they neglected to change the registry on the hull.

Poor USS Majestic. We got to see her die again. If you command a Miranda, don't get near the Defiant.

Okay. It wasn't the USS Majestic. Yes, it was stocked footage. Just because it was stock footage, doesn't mean they are the same ships. Sorry, I'm just in need of the ship names (especially the Nebula Class') for a site.

I knew the stock footage was there, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the show. Most of the battle was seen from the bridge and through the battle damage the Defiant took

I doubt very seriously that any of the ships in the new footage had names or registries.

Actually, I think I saw the name of a Miranda when the fleet is moving to intercept the Dominion. I'll have to go back and look

Yeah, but they never said Sisko couldn't change the registry too. The orginal is destroyed, it's not like there will be a mix up in a junk yard someday.

Probably because the registry read NX-74205. This indicates that the ship is experimental. If I'm not mistaken the Sao Paulo (Dunno exactly how to get the tilde on top of the a) is not experimental. Therefore, even if they did change the registry it should be NCC-74205.

We are talking about the same people who could not keep the Defiant to a certain length!!! If they can't keep the Defiant to look 170m, they won't bother to change the registry on her. They may think that we would not notice, but some of us here have big screen TV's!! Anyway, it was nice to see a Norway Class again since the last one I saw was blown up in First Contact. I saw that at though the visual effects people added things to the stock footage like the Akira Class being blown up in the scene with the Norway.

Actually, the ship was a Saber, not a Norway. It's the one that fires a phaser shot upward and to the right, correct?

Alright, I definatly got something here. While watching the repeat of the episode last night, I definatly caught part of a Miranda registry. NCC-18.... I couldn't get the rest so quickly, but there is also a name visible. I'll check it and get back to you. This Miranda is seen coming from the top center of the screen, and comes down to the bottom right so that it is practically level. As it comes down, you can see the registry on the bottom, and when it's level, you can see the name on top.

Alright, I'm back, and I think I got it. NCC-13471. I can't be totally sure, but I know that's close. The scene is where you see those Peregrine fighters real close flying in front of the Klingons. They sweep to the left, and the Miranda ends up in the bottom right corner. The registry is on the bottom of the hull, very briefly. Something si written on the top, but I can't tell if it's a registry or name

Hmm. The Miranda's registry is only barely visible...not enough to tell, really.

Yeah, I noticed that one, too. However, due to poor tape quality and lack of a huge television, I couldn't make out the number. By the time the ship gets close enough to the camera to be pretty legible, only the last two digits are still there, and the picture was too blurry for me to read them.

Okay, never mind... The one I was thinking of was the reused Majestic. I'm not sure which one you're tlaking about, and I don't feel like going to look at the tape again... :-)

Neither of the two new Galaxy shots - from underneath when doing that superb Defiant POV loop, or the one firing phasers forward - have a visible registry of any kind. . .

Posted by Deep6 on :

Yeah, on Matt's miranda, the first number does appear to be a one although I cant make any of the other numbers.

I've seen clips of the battle scene up to the bit where the Cardassians do something surprising. So I think I have the clip featuring the ship (Norway or Sabre) mentioned. . . but I can't see the Miranda being chased by a Breen ship. . . and I'm not sure if I have this scene which might feature a registry.

Lee, assuming the only clips you have are from Section31.com, the Miranda/Breen scene isn't there. It's pretty much just after that.

I don't know how much weight episode novelizations are given but two ships are mentioned in the novel for WYLB. The flagship of Admiral Ross is the Farragut. Another ship at the front of the battle is called the Nelson.
