Ironically, just as I received an Excelsior model kit I bought on eBay to build this model, these beauties show up!

Of most importance is the underside pic, which shows both how the nacelles are connected (Reliant pylons like the Curry, but attached to the secondary hull instead of under the saucer), and how the saucer is connected to the secondary hull (using part of the Excelsior's nacelle pylons.) Also, there seems to be an Enterprise-A sensor dome under the secondary hull in a grossly out-of-scale manner [Smile] It also looks like instead of the shuttlebay in front of the ship, there's a part of the front nacelle housing and part of the rear nacelle housing facing the opposite direction. The only part I can't identify is whatever is directly behind those nacelle housing parts.

Cool. Where'd they turn up?

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

They're from the Propworx auction. I was hoping they'd have pics of the Buran too, but I guess we'll have to wait on that.

I know what that piece is, because I've seen its shape before. I can model it in my head, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it's from

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

OK, I can't place it exactly, but I know that's the slideplate battery cover to something: a TV remote, a pocket calculator, something like that. I've seen it before & I've played with it before because of its shape. I'll keep thinking, though.

EDIT: Also, that sensor dome cluster isn't from the E-A, it's from Reliant.

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

Fascinating. It looks like there's no Excelsior neck at all on the model (in the last photo you can see the rear underside of the saucer). Is the whole thing connected by those two Excelsior nacelle pylons, Oberth style?

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

Shik: You're right about the sensor dome. I was confused because both the Reliant and the Ent-A models have that sensor dome as a separate piece, but the Ent-A's is actually smaller in size. As for the TV remote battery cover, if that's truly what it is, then that's the one piece I won't be able to replicate for my model, since there's no way in hell I'll ever be able to find the correct TV remote from 20 years ago.

Minutiaeman: Actually, it's only part of the Excelsior pylons. Two pieces fit together to form it (one piece has the "hump" between the pylons.) The piece used here is the one without the hump, since the Excelsior's own sensor dome doesn't allow the hump piece to fit under the saucer. I can post pics of the pieces if you're not sure what I'm talking about.

And I assume you know the little skinny connectors to the mid-nacelle are tractor feed belts from something like an Oki printer.

Edit: strike the below, found my pics and I was thinking of an area that is close but no cigar:

As for that mystery piece, check the stardrive section of the E-D 18 inch model if you have one (I sold mine). Pretty sure I remember it from there. Either aft of the ventral undercut or on the bridge area.

No, they're actually parts from a Runabout model kit. I already have the parts so I know what they are.

Posted by Guardian 2000 (Member # 743) on :

So the runabout part has those funny round bumps on the underside as seen in pic 5? That's what got me.

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

Just found the parts. Yep, the bumps are there.

Also, it looks like we might be in for a real treat pic-wise, if this is any indication:

[Margaret Cho] BURAAAAAAAAANNN!! [/Margaret Cho]

Shit, that picture alone has some meat to it.

Speaking of meats, I'm still poking the ones of my brains to recall what the odd bumpy part is from.

Yeah I have a vague recollection of that part as well. The way it seems to have a flange around the edge almost makes me think of a model base or stand. Considering the scale it's at to fit the top of the Excelsior secondary hull it's not very big. I've been trying to remember what it is, but like everyone else, it's eluding my brain dammit! [Frown]

Here's another angle where we can see that piece a bit better:

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Yeah, that's definitely a slide plate. FUCK! I wish I could remember where the hell I've seen this thing before!

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

The domelike blob at the center aft of the secondary hull appears to be a cast of the studio model Reliant's lower planetary sensor (the thing directly opposite of the bridge on the ventral side).
You can see the four "branches" leading off the dome.
Looks like they drilled a big honkin' hole in it to mount the model.

I wonder where the square-segmented garbage in the deflector comes from.

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

Yes, the sensor dome is from the AMT Reliant model kit.

Here's a link to the Propworx auction:

Of note: Two great pics of the Buran, and several pics of Jein's G'roth Klingon battlecruiser model used in DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations."

Well, now we really know what Buran's tail looks like.

There's a lot of neat shit here. I'm poor.

So I've been right all this time: they DID use two upper halves of the 1/2500 Galaxy for the tail. Actually, I'm half-right, because I thought they used 4 of them to make a gentle tapered section. Although...it looks like the connecting section to the saucer might be a hacked-up part of that lower half piece, & then they rammed the uppers up its ass. (I have no more model kits to play with & test my thesis.) Also look like the lower pylon is just a simple piece of thick sheet styrene.

Too bad we can't go back & find our who buys these models so we can ask tjen for better, more detailed images.

Actually I think it's just the part of the nacelle where the pylon would usually attach to:

No kidding. I'd LOVE to have a huge pic collection of these models from all angles.

Hopefully we'll see more photos of these things once they get included in private collections.

It has occurred to me that I know what this "unknown" piece is: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/38846762_star-trek-shuttle-pod-landing-bay-miniature

It is the aft-most landing bay door and deck of the USS Bozeman, Soyuz class, definitely screen-used. First time I've ever seen this thing so clearly. The deck doubles as the impulse engine, since the Reliant's original engine was covered by the aft-mounted superstructure. I wonder where the rest of it is...Probably destroyed. Don't know why they said it was "unknown", Okuda or Hutzel would have recognized that piece in 2 seconds.

Looks like it only had one bidder and sold for $100. If I had noticed this sooner, I probably would have tried to snag it for myself! Sigh...missed opportunities... [Frown]

Not from the auction site, but possibly taken in preparation for one: really good detail pics of the Olympic-class.

Thanks for the pics. I had seen them before. They were actually taken before the model was relabeled as the Pasteur for "All Good Things..." Pretty sure the pics were taken by Bill George himself.

Anyone see the Centaur magazine that came with the Eaglemoss starships collection? It looks like it has some angles of the original filming model that hadn't been previously seen.

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

I made two scans from someone's Youtube video. Yep, they are new shots of the model: a bottom view from Drexler's original photos, and several great views of the model from other angles. Incidentally, both the photos and the text make it clear that Buckner meant for the ship to be smaller than a Miranda, and yet Eaglemoss made their model Excelsior-sized.

Here are some pics of the model I built for comparison:

I could only use the model parts I had access to (other parts came from random airplane/tank/etc. kits), but I recreated the ship as best I could.

Posted by 137th Gebirg (Member # 2692) on :

Nicely done - looks very close. Cleaner, actually, without all the random greebles. Possibly my favorite of the whole DS9 FrankenFleet.

I noticed you already put the decals on. Are you going to try to reproduce the somewhat over-the-top paint scheme she had with all the blues and golds?

I do wonder whatever became of the first one he made and if the kid (now an adult) knows how valuable it is...

Posted by Dukhat (Member # 341) on :

No, the purpose of recreating the models was to show how they'd look as actual filming models as opposed to slapped-together-haphazardly-painted kitbashes. Hence the bluish base coat and light-blue warp grilles. I had been meaning to add more paint applications all over the model but got sidetracked by life.

Very cool- I love your model build on this!

I'm torn on the scale thing- it really work best from a parts POV, when you scale using the Miranda bridge and torp launchers- but from a practical perspective, what possible use could this tiny ship have during peacetime?!?

Also, the forward-facing Excelsior hangar would be almost useless at the smaller scale- maybe housing some workbees or a lone shuttlepod.

Sorry for the thread revive, but I finally found out what that piece is on the Raging Queen's secondary hull: It's the top piece from the cockpit of the Maquis Raider model kit:

https://p1.liveauctioneers.com/1034/71351/36622495_2_x.jpg?auto=webp&format=pjpg&quality=80&version=1431104180

These two shots show the piece at the exact same front angle on each model. They're clearly the same part.

Now I'm trying to figure out what that part is on the side of the Hutzel model. It's the fin-like piece at the back of the saucer between the Ent-B's impulse engine and the blue Robotix piece:

So, I happen to own an unbuilt Maquis Raider kit (for my one-day Yeager project) and I can confirm the part that Dukhat found. Behold! Part #7 on sprue #3605-9010:
 -

I’ve had the damn thing for years and never knew it! Now I kind of wonder if there's anything else that’s supposed to be behind it on the RQ. Never seen any head-on fore or aft photos of it that may provide a clue.

The part with the lateral cuts arranged in a column? The column looks like a piece of metal strapping as one might use to clamp down a vehicle hose. I hate to say anything given how vague the memory is, but I seem to recall a cheap plastic toy that used such a thing but I can't recall more specifics, unfortunately.

Like the little cheap plastic boxes with a grooved sliding lid and matching 'key' turner/opener, I don't think it lasted very long in intended use.

Posted by 137th Gebirg (Member # 2692) on :

Was thinking the same thing about the hose clamp ribbing.

As for the base part it’s sitting on, it’s so generic-looking and simple that it looks like it could easily be reproduced from a cut sheet of styrene if an origin can’t be sourced.

Since the saucer is connected to the secondary hull only by the nacelle pylon piece, the 'hump' where the pylons connect probably goes between the open area at the back of the Maquis cockpit part. There's probably nothing else back there since there's a big gaping hole where the pylon hump is supposed to go.

The other mystery of the Raging Queen is the 'ramp' part under the rear of the saucer. I have no idea what that is.

https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/ds9tm/raging_queen_side.jpg

And for the mystery part on the Hutzel: It's one piece. The guy who built that replica showed the parts in their original molded colors when he was building it, and it's an all-black piece. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to want to respond to me when I ask him what that piece is (he posted the pics of his replica on Facebook.)

It looks like it has some kind of “ladder” detail, with possible rungs at regular intervals, but it’s really too difficult to tell. I think I’ve seen pieces like that on WWII kits like the kinds used to build the TOS Battlestar Galactica filming miniature.
