That's what he calls it, anyway. I was at work when I first saw this & yelled, "Holy FUCK!!" from my cubiculum. He works in my chosen scale of 1/2500, too.

.....oh, wait! this stuff is mine! I just joined up (never knew you guys were here!)! Anybody have any 2500th fleets or alien ships? I'd love to see any scratchbuilds too!
Posted by iam2xtreme (Member # 836) on :
Hey, I like your work. Are all of them scratchbulids? I'm just starting to build my model fleet. However i only can get hold of a coulpe of ertl kits. Currently i have the Defiant, Ent-B, Reliant, a Miranda kitbash which i call the Triumphant class, the Ent-C, Ent-d and I'm starting to make a centaur using a reliant and excelsior kits. Seeing your stuff persuaded me to get my arse into gear and start working at them!!!
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Cool! The Steamrunner, Sabre, Norway, Nova, Rennasiannce, Prometheus and several of my designs are scratchbuilds. The Nebula class ships are either conversions from Victor Dolph or the SSM kit. Sounds like you are off to a good start with your fleet! Got any pics? I'd love to see them! also check out the 2500h thread at the starshipmodeler.com forums. Alot of great models there.
Posted by iam2xtreme (Member # 836) on :
what materials do you use to build the scratchbuilds? to say that they are scratchbuilds they are really impressive.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
The Steamrunner, Norway, Nova and Sabre hulls are carved from the resin of a broken Starcrafts 1400th Promethus and a 1400 Cardassian galor class that I bought on Ebay on impulse. I enlarged the ships' schematics on a copier at work and used that as reference (seeing the actual size of the ship is a BIG advantage for scale and proportion). All the decals and markings for these were made on Adobe illustrator 7 and color printed onto Chartpak clear matte decal paper: works kind of like a dull sticker but looks just like a decal after the finishing clear coat is sprayed. You should try a Norway or Sabre. Both ships were some of my first scratchbuilds and they turned out well. The hulls are simple shapes and not too large or tiny. The nacelles on Nova, Norway, Sabre and Steamrunner are made from wood "popcicle sticks" (sold cheap at any craft store) and cut/shaped to the correct size. Sabre's nacelles are layered coffe stirrers from Starbucks with some styrene detailing. the Prometheus was my first attempt at sculpting with two part resin epoxy. Nice stuff for simple shapes, but you should work on wax paper to prevent sticking. This stuff dries in about 24 hours and can be sanded. The Akira classes are from Spaceboy (now defunct) and I have done what I can to accurize them , shy of scratchbuilding the incorrect nacelles. Also check out TM lindsey's webpage for the best, most detailed 2500th models ever. He's producing an Excelsior from STIII now and sells fantastic kits of the Stargazer ,Nobel and Sydney class ships. Hope this is helpful!

Ravenstar Studios is releasing some fantastic 2500th kits! Including a Chandley (from FASA) and a Romulan Winged defender!
Posted by Akira (Member # 850) on :
were can i buy prepainted and prebuilt models?
Posted by iam2xtreme (Member # 836) on :
Nowhere that i know. I buy custom decals from federation models so my ships have registrys other than those of the vessels ertl supplys. For example i bought decals to change the Ent-B to the Lakota and the Ent-C to the ambassador. i dont buy models from there though as i cant afford them with the postage rates to the uk.
Also, Jason, where can i see these ravenstar kits?
Posted by NeghVar (Member # 62) on :
Ravenstar should be updating his site real soon. The 2500th kits from him are to be officially announced this month. T.M. Lindsey's kits are the best sculpted that I've ever seen anywhere. His current project is the Excelsior: both versions (STIII and STVI) He will also be selling excelsior parts (for all those DS9 Kit-bashes). Check my picturetrail page to see built versions of Lindsey's Sydney and Olympic calss ships. The Olympic is actually better than the Starcrafts version!!!!! Nova hobbies now has great kitsof the Norway class,Regula One station, and Vulcan cruiser (from Enterprise). I'd love to see some of you guy's models.....

I'm gonna take some pics to show you guys but i donthave a website. so i'll have to email them to who ever wants to see them.

Great as usual. i'm playing with the idea of scratchbuilding. i also wanna buy some of starcrafts stuff. like the akira, steamrunner and nova classes.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
I bought and painted (it's one piece) Starcraft's Nova class. One of the best detailed flawless models I have ever seen. Just amazng and only about $30.
Any of TM Lindsey's work is the same caliber: If I could do anything that good, I'd go into businuess tommrow.
I just finished Ravenstar's new 2500th ship (converted it from it's "freighter" intended use into a Soverign- era replacement for the Oberth.) ..as of right now it's my new favorite ship (at only 2 3/4" long!).
Bandai just announced it will be producinf a super-accurate movie Enterprise with light-up bridge, deflector and impulse engines.
Posted by iam2xtreme (Member # 836) on :
what scale is the nova class? I hope its 1/1400 because thats my favourite scale for TNG era ships. for movie era i prefer 1/537. dont know why. how long is the starcrafts model anyway? and what decals do you get?
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
The Nova is 6.25" long and is 1400th. Buy it from Tracy at federationmodels.com ...they also offer a fantastic decal sheet (the model comes with a less extensive one) from JT Graphics to upgrade the ship from super-accurate to ridicously-accurate.

Isn't that a bit long for 1/1400? I'd say it should be closer to 5". 6.25" at 1/1400 would make the ship 222m long.

Okey Dokey! I need some help coming up with names and registries:
I just recieved a ton of models as a kind of holiday gift from a SSM poster in Austraillia and I need some cool ship names. I have parts to build:
1 Centaur class (with extra impulse engines due to the "B" saucer) 1 Excelsior refit 1 Curry class (again with the extra impulse engines) 2 Ambassador class ships 1 Freedom class 1 Soverign 3 mutts made from constitution refit parts
...and I really need help finding schematics with all views represented for the Soyuz class Bozeman. I can find no pics of the studio model or of the lower saucer's ventral sensor array! Thanks in advance. -Jason

Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
When I was a kid, my friend Miguel and I would build "starships" out of Legos. Essentially, we'd just put down baseplates, and build bridges, and engineering rooms, and sickbays, and shuttlebays, and transporter rooms, and cargo bays, and stuff like that. Perhaps for old times sake I'll build one of those again ... walls three bricks tall, blank sloped pieces to stand in for computers ... every now and then we'd build a turbolift.
But no matter how inventive our "ships" were, we were always stuck for names.

Try having a fleet of over 70 starships and you'll get "builders block" too. Illustrious is a good one (brought to mind by your choice) Spectre works for the Centaur Got any Vulcan names? Mabye some stellar phenom? How about some non-terran names...I already have every WWII ship names I'll ever need....

"Jane's Fighting Ships" is always an asset, as are the bargain "World navies" books at Barnes & Noble & the like. I still have photocopied index listings of names from a library's copies of the 1925, 1952, 1974, & 1983 editions of Jane's. They supplement my personal world navy books & are good because they add in a lot of smaller nations; a lot of the Arabic & African names I have in my lists are thanks to Jane's.
I try to use lots of different names for different things. The last ships I built were Al Keriat (Arabic), Shenzhou (Chinese), & am now working on Lightoller, after the 2nd officer of the Titanic. Freighters might be named after plants--Honeysuckle, Snapdragon, Canada Thistle, or Star Of Bethlehem. "Things" work as well for support vessels: Coronal Flare, Van Allen Belt, Stellar Cluster, Ring Nebula, Eos Chasma. There's a whole bunch of named features on other worlds in this solar systems alone. I listen for oddly unique names around me; a lot of ships in my lists are from voter rolls of a stat house district in Connecticut (There's an idea, since voter rolls are public domain & available at the city clerk's office). Coworkers & people around you help as well; Broxie & Fabo came from a coworker & my roommate's ex-girlfriend.
As for alien-sounding names..it's not really difficult. Think about various syllables & sounds. For known races (Vulcans, Andorians, etc.) think about the names we have from those races.
Right here, looking through my address book, I come up with Tualatin, Fontenot, Giarmarco, Lugo, Vairo, Quibodeaux, & Orillia. Go look through some of the "You're The Admiral!" threads.
It's not hard.

I have (and have used) the janes guide for much of my fleet....no more former ship names from navies (at least for right now). Famous explorers and world leaders sound cool though....Ideas?
I's rather have alien names that actually mean something rather than phonetcally "winging it".
Anybody know of good sounding alien planets or moons of signifigance within the federation? What are Vulcan's moons called? Probably 1, 2, and 3 knowing those boring SOB's!
Posted by Ryan McReynolds (Member # 28) on :
In the novels and some early tech books, Vulcan's native name was T'Khasi and the large planet seen in the original TMP was T'Khut. A great resource for alien planet names might be Shane Johnson's Worlds of the Federation. The book also lists the "current" ambassadors from the listed worlds, so that's another source. LUG's Vulcan and Andor sourcebooks might also be of great use for names of locations and people from those worlds, but there are literally hundreds of alien names in the LUG books altogether. Then you could always borrow liberally from Todd Guenther's Ships of the Star Fleet, which has several alien names and shipyards, or even FASA. Oh, Star Trek Maps and the Spaceflight Chronology, too. I have all of the above and more, if anyone wants further info.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Thanks Ryan, but I have NONE of those books, so why not list a few cool names you think fo with the abpve unbuilt starships and what they come from. I'd be grateful.

Sure, in that overdone, totally conformist way...
quote:I's rather have alien names that actually mean something rather than phonetcally "winging it".
I'm not even going to go into the problematic aspects of finding "alien names that actually mean something."
One remembers the talent show episode of "The Critic" where Zoltan Villamiravitch sings his nation's anthem which consists of "eepie oopie peepee poopie" & everyone laughs, although he takes it quite seriously. So.
