TOS changed their uniforms in the first season.

TNG swapped duds in the third.

DS9 went all grey in the fifth.

VOY, well... Didn't. And that sucked.

Now, the odds are that ENT will never get a uniform change either. But what if they did? And more importantly, what should they look like?

Production people and some actors have noted that the current ENT costumes are relatively uncomfortable for the actors. They're more form-fitting than the recent TNG entries, and certainly leave little room for growth, as it were. Could you imagine what S7 Riker would look like in the S1 spandex? I shudder.

This thread challenges Flareites to re-design the ENT uniforms for the next logical iteration, just as the uniforms for the first three series changed. Maintaining the basic motif established by the current uniforms, have fun playing with what the next ones should be. Extra points go to a uniform variation for the captain's personal use - something missing in ENT and VOY.

Ready? Go!

Mark <--- Looks good in my old VOY costume, anyway...

TOS-miniskirt for Sato (and for the rumoured Starfleet T'Pol). And the rank pips have to go. Oh, and the ship's logo should move to the familiar TOS place.

{HomerSimpson} Mmmm . . . mini-skirted Hoshi. {/HomerSimpson}

Can we have them wearing capes?

And Gort-helmets.

Bunny ears for the ladies and a spike collar for Porthos.....and T'Pol as well.

This took me forever cause I basicly re-drew the 'uniform' graphic and i am NOT GOOD at human forms.

Anyway: Simple but diffrent:

Plus a bit of texture

Too First Contact, lose the shoulders. I'd like to see them moving to a two-piece though, with division-coloured shirt underneath, implying that at some point they stopped wearing the overjacket except for on landing parties (cf. "The Cage") then ultimately did away with it altogether and you have something that becomes the TOS uniform.

The lack of divisional colours in "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gine Before" is a real bugger when you're trying to think of a style that could infer some progression from ENT jumpsuits to TOS bellbottoms. B(

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

There was no logical progression from TOS, via TMP, to Movie-era either. And there *were* division colours in WNMHGB.

Posted by The Captain from M.I.K.E. (Member # 709) on :

yes, most people don't realize that it was beige in place of red for those two episodes, but the colors essentially meant the same thing from ENT -> Cage/WNMHGB -> TOS -> TNG
command: gold -> gold -> gold -> red
ops: red -> beige -> red -> gold
sci: blue -> blue -> blue -> blue
omitting the TMP and MOV era, because they used a six color (if not more) system rather than the three divisions.

BTW, it might be fascinating for intermediary uniforms between ENT and The Cage to use styles from the TMP and Movie uniforms.. hrm

If the ENT uniforms are going to change in the near future, my guess is that it would be after the cliffhanger story arc when the ENT crew safely returns to (their) present day Earth and the series kind of relaunches with a new story arc.

If it doesn't happen then, it probably won't happen for at least another season, if ever.

Why do they need new uniforms? The only reason TNG changed them was because the initial design was too uncomfortable for the actors, and the only reason DS9 changed them was because they created a new design for FC. Since there is no analagous situation on ENT, there's no reason for them to change the uniforms.

Oh, and the "gold" from the TOS pilots and the first two seasons wasn't gold, it was green. The same green that Kirk's wraparound and dress uniform were, in fact. But the material that the tunics were made out of (velour) reflected light in such a way that on camera it appeared gold. So when the third season came around, they just made them gold.

"The only reason TNG changed them was because the initial design was too uncomfortable for the actors"

Plus, noone needs to see android package.

I don't think they'll change uniforms either. I'm just saying "if they do", which was kind of the point of the thread, no?

If this was TOS, the Internet would just have exploded.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

That cuts it. T'Pol will just have to spend more of her scenes in Decon.

 - designed as post-Federation version, an 'in-between' for ENT and Cage uniforms, with a few of TOS and movie uniforms (like the jacket clasp, shoulder patch, and the tunic belt)

i have ideas for a captain's variant too, and there will be caps too (the captains variant should include April/Pike's hat envisioned in "The Cage" pre-production)

Starfleet delta? There shouldn't be a Starfleet delta yet. I think.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Nup - not until the Enterprise 1701 is launched.

There is the sorta-delta which was seen on the side of starships on Starbases and is seen in the Starfleet command logo for ENT.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I don't think I like the patch overlapping the shoulder seam like that.

Posted by The Captain from M.I.K.E. (Member # 709) on :

well, there was a Starfleet style Delta for UESPA on Ares IV, and a warped Starfleet style delta on the SF command patch in the ENT era, so I'm postulating that the sideways, warped version may start around the formation of the federation (the boomerang pennant insignia also looks like its a partial evolution from the ENT SF command patch, too)

i don't think its too far fetched for Starfleet to have a delta symbol, theyre everywhere during the 2000s and 2100s, even before the 1701

I'm with Alan on the location of the ship patch. I think it should stay on one shoulder, with the Fed logo on the other. The current ENT uniform doesn't have a chest badge so the omission wouldn't be a major problem.

And. . . Pips AND stripes? The idea was silly on the abandoned Generations uniforms, and it hasn't improved with age. I'm not sure though whether we're ready for stripes yet, but fortune favours the bold, I gather. 8)

Posted by The Captain from M.I.K.E. (Member # 709) on :

it's been done, in the First Contact uniform.

the stripes, much like the FC uniform (and "The Cage"s stripes), are pointless.

Whoops, looks like somehow mis-read that part of the initial post. They certainly don't look uncomfortable, anyway.

They're made of less pliable or elastic fabric, unlike the more breathable cotton duds from the TNG era. Plus, to keep those figures I'm sure that they're pretty tight. In the latter TNG seasons, the two-piece uniform for the men became more essential.

And don't forget the Enterprise-esque "galaxy delta" that was on Friendship One...

Mark

Awesome looking uniforms. [Wink] They do make sense all except for the stripe on the cuffs. The delta shield seen on the uniforms has been seen on Friendship One, the early ENTERPRISE uniforms (First Flight), and on some flags and banners on ENT. It all works and I can not wait to see more updates.

We have made it through two pages with no gay jokes. I am flabbergasted, and possibly encouraged.

No gay jokes required: those boots speak volumes. [Wink]

Niiiice job on the renderings BTW, Mike.
Why not re-design the TOS uniforms to more closely follow Enterprise's instead?
At least the TOS spacesuit has to be replaced with something not so silly.

anything about TOS == not silly.

remember that if you wish to address me.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

So that silver and mesh spacesuit is still considered cool by you?
I really dig the screen door instead of a faceplate: very protective.

TOS sucks donky dick.
There.
I said it.

Live with the truth, Mike.

I don't even know why you're here.

To torment you and everyone else that thinks a low-budget 1960's TV show is somehow the pinnacle of design and can never be improved upon, Ultra-Moojuice.

Really, some TOS fans are just as fanatical as any religion.

Well your 'sideways warped version' - is the 'boomerang' from the TOS starship pennents and the starfleet command logo AND seen on TOS starbases... where is that picture of Starbase ??11?? again...

Lets not forget the Cronowerx logo which most likely was the company that gave way to many Starfleet era technologies (modern computing, etc). This was circa 1996.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

But that logo was actually the emblem of the 29th-century Starfleet.

I agree that the classic arrowhead should not crop up, especially not as a fleetwide symbol.

Henry Starling found the Aeon timeshuttle that Braxton crashed into 1960's earth. It had this 29th Century Starfleet emblem and he used it and the technological secrets inside the Aeon timeshuttle to form Cronowerx, who is majorly responsible for the late 20th century technological leap (and possibly the very early catalyst for the technologies used almost 150 years later).

So someone adapts the Cronowerx logo as the symbol for early interstellar probes, the Enterprise, and finally Starfleet itself.

I think we all know where this is going.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

This could easily turn into a timelines-argument...

But regardless, the arrowhead should NOT appear on Enterprise.

Maybe the Trek version of the arrowhead shouldn't appear, but what about something closer to the contemporary flight symbol? If you don't understand what I mean, it's the delta-shaped widget seen many places, but especially prominent on the AF Space Command logo. Basically, it's our familiar arrowhead, except symmetrical and non-curvy.

I think something like this as the captain's special tunic, imagine a ship patch on the shoulder and rank bars or pips on top of the shoulders. A little old is new again.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Looks like a special ops uniform from TNG.
Mabye if the kept that design but in the current starfleet blue and just added pips.
Or mabye a color-coded departmental band on the cuffs to denote rank instead (three for commander, etc.).
