What do the extra rings stand for? There are only 5 now, right? And they all mean something, I think.
Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
The rings signify the 5 (yes, five) continents participating in the Olympics. The Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceana. And every country's flag has at least one of the Olympics ring colors in it.
As for the two additional ones in the picture, I would assume they mean Luna and the large space stations? Or maybe Luna and Antarctica? In any case, it would be interesting having the Olympics on the Moon. Probably have to have a whole new set of rules!

Eh, Luna and the Mars Colony? Just a thought...
Posted by Wes (Member # 212) on :
Luna (Grey) and either Antarctica or mabye the Underwater Continent (Sky Blue). I am unsure if there are multiple Underwater continents or not - I would probably need to watch "Family" again to really know. I think the displays in that episode indicated several borders under water, if thats the case, its easier to just call it Antarctica. Im sure the many species that call Earth home enjoy the Antarctic climate.
I wonder what kinds of new events there could be in the 24th century. Intresting stuff indeed.
I dont belive Mars would be included. Luna is included because it is Earth's moon. There is probably an interstellar version of the games by 2380 where worlds compete, not countries/provinces.

Then wouldn't it be better to have the rings (whatever number) to represent the founding worlds of the Federation at the least. Maybe they should be Earth, Vulcan, Andor, Tellar, and whatever the fifth world is just so we can keep it at five rings.
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
I question the viability of multispecies sporting events.
Posted by Wes (Member # 212) on :
Ditto, Im pretty sure the Olympic games in the Star Trek universe was kept an Earth-only (and its moon) event. With a seprate type of interstellar games held for multiple species.
Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :
So blue could be the submarine cities/'continents', and grey could be Luna (and other Earth colonies?).
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
How about light blue being all space-station/starship type arrangements... I.e. those who were born and/or live their lives mostly in space - maybe like Space Dock?
Very nice. You could always change light blue to Orange/ochre for Mars though.
I'm guessing one of the sports would be Parisees Squares.

Zero-gee football!

Just thinking - too bad about Athlete's who grew up on the Moon and then have to go and compete on Earth. Presumably most places have 1G grav plates on most places on the moon.

In the future, will the Gymnastics judges still fuck South Korea out of a gold medal?
Just, you know, wondering.
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
I'm sure that, in the Trek universe, Korea was reunited around the same time as Ireland.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Mabye the world government made Korea unite with Ireland. Just to see what the combined accent would sound like after a few generations, of course.

Mmmmmmmmmm.... fried dog and Guinness

Harry Kim?

OK, my spin on things:
I think the orange/ochre of the 6th ring represents Mars - better than the light blue which could be anything.
And 2156 - 200th Anniversary of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

The bright glowy part towards the bottom of Australlia represents the area that's still lethally irradiated after WWIII.
Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :
And New Zealand has evidently pulled another Atlantis.
Posted by Wraith (Member # 779) on :
New Zealand isn't close enough to Australia to be on that view is it?
BTW, at least one of the colours in the five rings appears on every national flag in the world.
Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :
You sure? I thought Isreal's flag was only white and light blue, lighter than the blue ring.
Posted by Wraith (Member # 779) on :
Well, that's what I heard. I think blue just counts as blue, rather than going for exact shades.
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
Well, it would be hard to come up with a flag that didn't have one of those colors. A white, purple, and orange flag? I should hope not.

My only crit is that the rings on the current Olympic flag are linked.
New Zealand is too far east to show up in that image, the south insaldn at about the level of the glowing blob that is Tasmania.
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
It looks like at some point some devious terrorists attempted to bring Australia down by crashing Tasmania into it.
(OH SNAP!)

Olympic.org scares me. Any reference to an "Olympic Movement" just begs for a foray into toilet humor.
(BLOOSH!!! (the sound of shattering porcelain))
It's a 10!!!

Well it was quick and rough and I'm not an expert with vectors.
New Zealand is another COUNTRY - Before Federation in 1901 there was talk of New Zealand becoming and Australian state but it never happened.
The bright bit just happened - due to the filter - but seeing as it's in the position of MELBOURNE - and the Olympics are being held there (in 2156) Then I sorta works.
The Rings I stole directly from Wes's pic. I just changed the light blue to ochre orange. This was to depict Mars, with the Grey being Luna.

You know what, i just realized my rings dont interlock. Man i was lazy. Im gonna fix that when i get home.
Posted by Lt. Ro Aries (Member # 1373) on :
What about a ring to repersent an Atlantis colony. I imagine that they would have resttled the area, even if it is still underwater. They would be great in all water sports.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
Well in mine - check the date. PLUS there were only plans for raising the sea-floor in "Family" we don't know if they actually went ahead with it or even succeeded in doing it.
Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :
We do know that no Atlantis shows up (yet) in DS9 tactical maps of Earth.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
Might be like a 100 year project. Then they'd have to terraform it presumably.
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
Not to mention its existence would turn Europe into an arctic wasteland.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
It's already a cultural wasteland...Hahahahaha!
Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :
No more an arctic wasteland than Canada.
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
(Or is it?) Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Not to mention all the delicate marine life that will suffer from even a 2 degree change. Flooding will be rough in costal areas and erosion will increase.
On the upside, we'll finally be rid of Venice.
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
(Uh, climate change as a result of global temperatures shifts is, of course, a real concern, but my point is that slapping a large chunk of earth in that path of the Gulf Stream is likely to have similar results.)
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
I'm cool with any plan that gets rid of Venice.
Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :
Go suck a coke, burgerface.
(Also, weather control technology would offset any climatological shifts induced by terraforming, it occurs to me. At least above sea level.)
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
Well maybe Picard saw these defects in the 'Atlantis' project and gave it a miss!
